    Without some kind of inspect-able numerical analysis, it's hard to say what really happened. Maybe Reddit shut down entire threads rather than individually. Craigslist routinely does that in my observation: snips out entire tree branches to clear one bad apple.

    Variation of Hanlon's Razor: never attribute to bias what can be explained by mere pennypinching.

    Our huge piles of garbage are probably the most likely objects to leave fossils, not buildings or machines. The future Cockroachites will name "species" such as CocaColus, PezDispensis, HappyMealus, ETcartridginia, and AolDiscus.

    The Drake equation is a thought exercise - nothing more ... lets us imagine a galaxy full of bug-eyed aliens.

    satellite engineers aren't likely to be stupid.

    True, but their bosses or company owners might be to shave a buck. I've seen co's run public CMS's using Microsoft Access. I warned them, but they didn't want to pay for a real database and don't trust OSS.

    A roaming bot with a camera could be a big source of sales and related spam. The bot could tell what's worn out or missing from your home, and forward suggestions of replacement products of a matching size and style preference to Alexa, your email inbox, and/or web ads. It could become the ultimate targeted spam engine: Truman Show for the masses.

    They may have niches where they shine, but PHB's and resume buzzword padders may use them where not appropriate. For example, some fool stuck our shop with a "microservices" architecture when we don't need it, wasting time and money. Goddam idiots.

    The devil's in the details. The Fox News link claims Reddit censored "Trump supporters". What if those supporters were also spewing racist comments. Would Fox tell you that detail?

    Because it's hard to separate speculation from fact. Just because spooks can do something does not mean they are in a particular case.

    We hope our system of checks and balances prevents most misuse. There will always be bad apples, let's just keep them to a minimum.
