  1. Again.... on FCC Affirms VoIP Must Allow Snooping · · Score: 2, Insightful

What makes the FCC think that they can make laws about programs that exist OUTSIDE of the US? Why should my VOIP program have security holes because of the big bad terrorists terrorizing the US?

I disagree with you on the browser-detection-scripts.

Check Skype's site for an example of how such scripts can help computer newbies install things. It has a step by step set of screencaps that show how to install it using either Firefox or IE(maybe others, I didn't check). Think about the mother who got Firefox installed on her computer by her geek son and is trying to follow the installation steps given in an IE fashion. People who see a technology like this that can help adoption of Firefox etc. and throw it away are simply being short sighted.

  5. Non-US Surfers? on Congress May Consider Mandatory ISP Snooping · · Score: 1

  7. Still a Few on Do Kids Still Program? · · Score: 1

I'm turning 18 soon, and while I realise that there probably isn't as many people programming in their early lives, I think there are still some. However, that's not the point.

What I find interesting is to look at why this is. Going off assumptions, I believe that the computer was all the rage when many /.ers were growing up. When something is new and exciting, everyone wants to get a piece of it. I believe that's why many people programmed as kids, and continued to even later. Fast forward to present, and computers are simply the thing that most kids access MTV or AIM/MSN with. There is no awe that is brought about when using a computer, even from me.

That said, what does the future hold? Can my generation keep up or start ambitious projects like the F/OSS community puts out? Who will program for fun in their spare time, when they don't do it now?

  8. Re:Non-MS Open Source on OpenBRR Launches Closed Open-Source Group · · Score: 1

That's exactly what I thought of when I read this. There was a ./ article a while back about how MS was trying to join the ODF alliance, and it was extrapolated that it was just an attempt to slow down ODF certification. Guess these folks saw that and came up with this.

  9. Dev Diary on EA Announces Open-Ended RPG · · Score: 1

I saw the Dev Diary on the site yesterday. If the vibe I got from that is indicative of the rest of the team, there really is no hope... There's over a half-a-minute long intro that has NOTHING to do with the game.

Not to mention that the art screams LOTR...the orcs, the towers, good God.

I really hope to be proved wrong though.

Who actually followed the WCG before this and is commenting? Because if you did, you know that the only thing people cared about was PC, and NOTHING ELSE. No one who attends these gives a damn about a PS2 or GC or Xbox competition, and thats the cold hard truth. Starcraft SELLS. FPS deathmatches SELL. This is not going to be any different and someone who thinks so is just staying hip with the times and ragging on MS. (I realise I've just murdered my karma)

I don't buy retail games anymore. I'm sick of it. Not only are the staff dumbasses by and large, but the price gouging on Canadians is abysmal. Why the hell do I have to pay more because of the cost of localization so that half my manual can be in goddamn french? Right now, I'm buying my games on eBay, and I shred 20 bucks Canadian off the price of Oblivion for the 360. Some of that came in the form of a lower than retail price, and some came in the form of no taxes(15%).
