Were it my child, I'd explain what the tool was for, how to use it properly, make sure the kid understood the consequences of misuse, and watch them the first few times they used it to make sure they followed the appropriate safety practices. After that, I'd trust the child to know how to use the tool and why the safety gear was important.
I would always supervise kids with power tools just as I would with kids with a gun. I'll bet that your kids like most would be sensible once they had been taught but accidents do happen.
Sure kids need freedom to learn, but they can get that by you both working together on a project with you taking a back seat.
Wrong! A swear word IS a form of expression. Now you may not like it (neither do I as a rule). You may think that it is crude and uncivilized. You may feel that you want or deserve enlightened debate. But the very fact that they seem to have such a negative effect on you makes them a powerful part of someone's vocabulary.
The Sinclair ZX Spectrum was perhaps the machine that really started home programming in the UK. There were various magazines with basic programs printed in them in the early 80s.
A better bet is to build this proposed generation of nuclear plants while doing major research into getting more bang for the buck from renewables. So when those plants are retired after 30 years(?) there is finally a viable alternative.
This may have been said before but I think that it is important enough to risk being modded redundant.
Others may disagree but I found the awesome bar a PITA within two minutes, rather than endure it or revert to the old firefox I decided to change it, if you want to do the same read on.
Type about:config in the soon to be slightly less awesome address bar and agree to the disclaimer.
Look for browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped and change the value to true and you will lose any form of dropdown when you type an address.
Alternatively you can look for browser.urlbar.maxRichResults and set the value to 0 but this will still show one item, or as others have said use the oldbar plugin (although this isn't quite such a complete solution).
You can work for a good company and still have a dumb boss. They may have come from outside the organisation, having had an excellent interview but just aren't up to doing the job - not necessarily a fault of the selection process. Or they may have been promoted beyond their ability - admittedly that is more of a reflection on the employer.
So you might not want to work for your boss but do want to work for your company.
One question - would a true AI design a better, faster AI knowing that it was creating its successor and that it would become obsolete as a result? Would it favour self preservation?
Actually, yes. It is just that the bomb wasn't ready before Germany surrendered. Defeating Germany earlier would have prevented the Soviets getting there (not to mention saving allied troops lives by shortening the war), so even with the knowledge of potential fallout (not as well known then as now of course) he or Roosevelt would have done it.
True, but why should he have to pay at all? The compensation was for wrongful imprisonment. Are kidnap victims made to pay their kidnappers for board and lodgings? Same principle.
You make some interesting points (that I largely agree with), but I picked up on two words in your first paragraph that pose the biggest problem - "long term". This is a very hard sell in business today where this year's figures mean bonuses to chief execs who may not be there in five years time.
The second problem is going thin with web based products. Many areas just don't have the bandwidth to do this yet. But by the time the software is mature hopefully this will be the case.
I would agree largely regarding personal responcibility (try as you might you will never know every single thing that happens in a large corporation) except in cases of personal involvement. What I was observing was that corporations get the benefits of being a "person" while not always being held accountable to the same standards (or so it seems). There is perhaps no easy answer - while some greater form of oversight may be fairer can we take yet more levels of expensive government bureaucracy?
That's pretty much the whole idea of having a corporation. A good reason why the corporation shouldn't enjoy the same rights as the individual. Punishments can only realistically be financial and this can be easily swallowed by large corporations. There is no threat of serious jail time (with the associated beatings and unwanted "dates" in the shower room) or indeed any risk of death row - how many large corporations have been closed down or broken up by the government recently?
It's really hard to hurt something with a sawed-off shotgun at much beyond 20 feet, and really hard to get that close to a rabbit (unless the rabbit is a pet). Try a.22 instead.
Nuke the rabbit from orbit - it's the only way to be sure.
"If a large enough percentage of the population wants the law to change, they will simply vote in new politicians."
Assuming that there are politicians to elect who share your viewpoint. How many times have all the major parties agreed on a subject offering you no chance to vote for a policy that you want. Democracy is often a compromise - we vote for the least bad candidate with regard to the policies that we want.

But you can't be hung by the iPhone.
It could be thrown at you though. But hey, at least it wouldn't hurt as much as a chair.
Do you get hit by many cyclists?
"Three stage", "three paddle"... but is it three laws safe?

Was this an episode of Sliders? There was a pilot movie named "Doorways" that predated Sliders by a couple of years that had the same scenario.

Nuke the rabbit from orbit - it's the only way to be sure.We use a 50 ton press to destroy our used hard drives - saying "You're terminated..." when you press the button is optional.
