  1. Re:Cause of HD DVD ROM on HD DVD Player Sales Grind To a Halt · · Score: 1

There are over 9 million PS3s actually in customer's hands at this point and around 3.7 million of them are in the U.S. You're telling me there are somewhere north of 3 million PCs and laptops with HD-DVD drives in the U.S.?

By the way... those sales figures that NPD tracks for hardware are standalone players only. They do not count the PS3 or the 360 add-on drive.

Right... that's why the Playstation 3 is the most open mainstream console ever (any notebook SATA drive will work, most USB devices are plug 'n play, slots for pretty much every type of memory card, and it has built in options for formatting your hard drive and installing Linux, etc.) and even the fucking hard drive on the 360 is locked down to the point where you have to buy *their* models at $100 for 20gb and $180 for 120gb.

Be fair here: Crackdown isn't that big and Oblivion pushed the absolute limit of what could be fit on a DVD. You notice how low-res the textures are in Oblivion? They didn't have room for anything better. There's your disc limitation right there.

It's the same with Mass Effect - Bioware came out and said they just barely managed to squeeze the game onto a single DVD and that they stretched their compression methods beyond what they even thought they could do to accomplish that.

The crazy troll may be pretty far off-base but more storage on a disc is a good thing.

The "failure" of the last three doesn't really have anything to do with Sony.

Their memory stick is just another memory format.

SACD is superior to DVD-Audio and while SACD has failed... so has DVD-Audio. There's just not enough of a market for better than stereo music.

UMD is only for the PSP and it's still all over the place for games. The only reason it has failed as a movie format is because the movie studios ignored Sony and tried to price them at the same level (or sometimes even higher!) as DVDs.

None of these really constitute failure on Sony's part.

-Memory card readers (pointless if all you want to do is save games and download stuff)

    -More hard drive space
    -Chrome trim

Is that really worth $100 to you? If I'm going to pay $600 for a PS3 I'd rather buy the 20gb model and a 120gb notebook hard drive to slip into it.

Unlike with the 360, the cheaper system is not in any way gimped. The 20gb PS3 is actually a much better deal, IMHO, than the 60gb model.

I don't agree with that at all. Admittedly, I'm only in Archadia right now, but quickenings are still invaluable. Sure you'd be an artard to start the fight that way with your main party...

What I tend to do is start a boss fight with my backup party. I'll launch straight into a quickening chain, taking careful note of how much of a boss' life bar I deplete with the weaker backup party's attack. I'll instantly have everyone use charge, which at 0 mp almost always succeeeds, which will get them back around 50-70 MP to allow them to duke it out with the boss while still casting cure spells and removing status ailments. Eventually, they'll get slaughtered and I'll bring in the real party and start pouring on the punishment. I'll inflict every status ailment they're not immune to, keep esuna and dispell always handy and just pound the boss with hasted melee attacks from characters wearing shell and protect.

And very often, when it seems the boss is ready to mutilate my party faster than I can get my heal spells off, I'll have done enough damage to initiate a quickening chain and decimate a boss that otherwise would have wiped me out. And if that doesn't finish the boss? Everyone uses charge, two characters heal, and the one with the fewest total MP tries to use charge two more times without it failing, allowing me to jump into another quickening chain and hopefully finish off the boss.
