Personally I think Thunderbird is quite good, and it will get a lot better, improving faster than any other email client out there, thanks to the community effort.

But in this case it's your history. I've worked with RedHat for several years and dealt with what most people would consider huge networks of machines running it. This has never really bothered me. *shrug*
It seems funny now, but back in the day (which, incidentally, isn't really "the day" since it was only like 5 years ago) I remember playing Q2 at 1024x768 on SLI 12MB Diamond Monsters thinking "it doesn't get any better than this."
If you've got a decent router you can use QoS to prioritize ACKs to mitigate this problem. Check out this. The article targets OpenBSD's pf, but if you're using something else it shouldn't be too difficult to adapt the idea to your system.
FWIW, modifying and recompiling a Debian package isn't as difficult as you think it'd be. No more difficult than editing an RPM.spec file, IMHO.
Maybe Gentoo ebuilds are easier than that (I don't know, I've never read one), but considering you probably just need to fix a typo or make a simple change it's not likely to make too big a difference.
You very well may know this already, but Daniel Stone has an unofficial apt repository with XFree86 4.3.0 packages. I've been using them for months with great success.

If you just like compiling X, or have some other reason to, forget I said anything:).
A datacenter full of Gentoo? Sounds remarkably like the nightmare I've been having for the past few months. You poor soul, at least I wake up eventually.
Maybe they figured the rather unique words/spellings of the titles and/or artists of a lot of these songs would present the lowest possibility of tripping on another embarrassing false positive while still being popular enough to net plenty of "examples."
If you produce a good album, there's no need to add any more value to get me to buy it. CD inserts? I'll never make them. Hell, I don't even own a printer at home. If the album makes it off my hard drive it's just onto a CD-R and into my car's CD changer. Price it reasonably and put it up for download. Make sure it's in an unencumbered format so I can listen to it on any of the various Linux or BSD boxen I'm logged into on a given day.
I want to buy good music that's reasonably priced, because I want the artist to make more good music. If you can provide that, don't worry about convincing me further.
Only con to the system: Everyone's not like me. You can't change that. You'll always have the few people who would rather steal and save a few bucks. You can live without them. Don't worry.
I usually feel it's rather classy to avoid getting personal when it isn't warranted. That said, DRobbins felt the need to talk about how he could easily "win" this "argument" by telling what really happened.
If he's going to go there, I think he needs to put up or shut up. Other than that, I'm glad he responded the way he did. You're right, eventually it would just become a dick measuring contest.
(Of course, it seems to have started pretty close to that state.)
If you're part of the "Linux community" you mentioned, let me the hell out. While it's hard to disagree with some of your observations about the vocal (seemingly) majority of Gentoo users, you manage to layer enough homoerotic bullshit on top of your valid points that you look just as bad as any of them.
You mostly come across as some little kid who got a mean response on one of their forums and has a bone to pick. The only reason I can see for you to be moderated "Funny" is because there is no "Sad" modifier.
It looks like our spam problems are almost over. I mean, look at what happened when Microsoft decided to "focus on" getting rid of security holes in their products...

That was so much fun.

That's beautiful. Brought a tear to my eye.
Why are you so worried? You seem to be more afraid of each other, then other things!
That's because we're a bunch of bad motherfuckers.
Well, I can't speak for everyone, but I know I'd prefer it if they gave their hardware away for free.

Right, but what's your excuse?

Just a thought.
I disagree.
Gentoo is for people who like compiling
So, idiots?

What about you?
I wonder if they care that I'm having a fight with my girlfriend and am calling your wife to make arrangements to stay over tonight.
That is probably the most informative thing I've ever seen on Slashdot. I've been using mod_rewrite to do the same thing forever. You're great.

Yeah, I think the original board of ICANN said something similar. We all know how that turned out.
At least for Opera 7 I'm pretty much positive that their Win32 GUI isn't QT.
