  1. Re:The sad thing is . . . on How Linux and Windows Stack Up in 2006 · · Score: 1

*IF* Microsoft created a list of software in Windows, categorized by type it would be HUGE. There is no way they could include a list of all of the software made for Windows.

Now, for the sake of argument lets say the do include such a list that is somewhat manageable. Manageable meaning that it's not every piece of software made. Most software for Windows is not open source, therefore they would need to integrate some software purchase scenario within Windows to connect to the software maker, download the software and handle payment.

Whats wrong with this? All of a sudden retail starts screaming because they just got cut out of the deal. CompUSA, Circuit City, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Office Depot, Office Max, Staples, Mom & Pop's software shop in who knows where USA.
The OTHER problem is this...who decides what goes in the list? What kind of deals get brokered? All of a sudden Microsoft is now controlling WHO I buy my software from? How about the little guy...Small Time Software Company Inc.? Does he then sue to get placed on the list? Can he legally?

This just opens up WAY too many cans of worms. Sorry, let walk into a store and buy what I want or let me do my own research and buy online for download. Don't give me a list of what XXX Company has made deals with.

Somehow, through digital representations of Legos they captured the feeling of Star Wars. They did a lot of things right unlike Sony Online Entertainment and Star Wars Galaxies. SOE continues to try to make the game into something it can't be - World of Warcraft. Games like this bring fun, adventure and nostalgia to new and old fans alike not to mention it opens up the market for small children.

660,000 people online. Says something about dissatisfaction with that status quo, perhaps.

It also could mean that some of these individuals have self esteem issues, be physically challenged, or might just be lazy in the real world. If you tell me I can be a rock star in a game in a few hours or weeks great! Tell me to that to be a rock star in the real world that I have to have talent (talent is for sake of argument - we all know you don't REALLY need talent ie. Ashley Simpson), work a day job/play clubs at nights for years, live in a loft, actually practice, etc...I might not be so quick to jump into it.

I don't think it says much about people being unhappy in their real world First Life, I think it is a means for some people to live out a fantasy life for fun.

I think avatars actually act differently than the controller (player) would in a similar real world social situation.

With the internet things like chat rooms or online games shield the person from most of the social or psychological repurcussions for certain behavior. 30 year olds act like 15 year olds. Accountability goes out the window. The moral boundaries are also changed. How many people do you know that would cheat in an online game but would not cheat on an exam?

Other things to watch out for...

    1) Gasoline - I know it smells nice and all, but be careful - add a flame and you have a really terrible explosion or fire.

    2) Frying pans - Don't over heat the cooking oil! You'll have a nice fire that water won't put out.

    3) Metal in microwaves - Do not get metal anywhere near your running microwave! It will spark and cause a fire! Remember, you heard it first here on slashdot.
