  2. Muni WifFi = Edsel on Microsoft Pushing Municipal Wi-Fi · · Score: 0

Muni WiFi is the Edsel of Internet connectivity. It is a land grab by ISPs that is facilitated by politicians that want to promote themselves using technology that was never intended for this purpose. In 3-5 years, the mayors and city councils that backed Muni WiFi will be out of office and their replacements will kill the failed projects and blame their predecessors as the companies that base their business on Muni Wifi fail one by one as they realize the business and technological models just don't work. No matter how great of an idea Muni WiFi is on paper, the current technology and business models have terminal flaws. Unfortunately, the vested political and corporate interests behind Muni WiFi have nothing to gain by acknowledging or addressing it.

  5. Profit is ok, but screwing your supporters is not on Gracenote Defends Its Evolution · · Score: 2, Informative

I wish Gracenote all the best in making a profit off the data they collect. What I find disappointing and a betrayal of its own users/data providers is Gracenote's latest for-profit initiative to use its database to pursue those that the RIAA and labels very loosely (or often inaccurately) define as copyright violators. So, it could be possible that data I provide to Gracenote could be used against me by Gracenote to assist the RIAA or their cohorts in one of their heavy handed copyright suits. Nice...

  6. What about the artist? on Zune Profits Go To Record Label · · Score: 1

How much of the payment to Universal will go to the artists and songwriters? If this and the YouTube deal don't show artists and songwriters what their future looks like, I don't know what more can be done. The labels are making all the deals, taking all the proceeds of those deals, threatening and suing music listeners as artists stand by silently letting all this take place. Artist complacency today will guarantee them a future as wage slaves for the labels.

I've used SageTV, which is a commercial PVR, makes commercial skip available thru two different third party plug-ins. I've tried just about every PVR software and Sage is the most stable and easiest to set-up plus the developer support of the plug-ins and other customizations is fantastic.

  16. Gone on. Use it. I dare you... on New Copy Protection to Make Playing DVDs on a PC Difficult · · Score: 1

I would love to see this technology used. First, consumers would start returning the DVD to retailers with complaints about it not working properly on their PCs. Second, retailers would complain to the distributors and returning "defective" units. Distributors would complain to the studios. Someone in Congress gets ahold of this. FTC gets involved. Millions of DVDs recalled to get "DOES NOT WORK ON PC/Mac" stickers which makes them, basically, worthless. The whole industry, from top to bottom, takes a huge hit. And, as the final insult, it gets hacked 24 hours after the first DVD is released anyway. Go for it! Who wants to be the first studio exec with their name on this? You could be famous!

I've been selling technology for almost two decades and one thing that I see over and over is that internal IT departments either a.) vastly overestimate their abilities b.) prevent introduction of outside techology providers for political reasons or c.) both. There are several companies where the CIO told me "oh, we're already building that in-house. it will be live next quarter" and years later they still have not successfully implemented that technology. Kudos to Netflix for acknowledging that somebody outside their company might be able to do it better. At most companies, the CIO would have never let this happen and/or the CEO wouldn't have the business sense to challenge internal assumptions.
