Tell me, how do you police this completely open, unregulared, free system? How do you handle people who cheat, ruining the game experience for everyone? Do you just boot them and hope you don't ever see them again? What about that obnoxious little 12 year old who thinks its cool to call every one "niggers" and "dirty jews?"
Live has these problems and its not a perfect system. But they do try to address these issues.
I'm not sure why youre so invested in this. You dont like Live. Good for you, theres always XB connect. Theres a lively community of XB multiplayer gamers who feel like you do.
Live provides features and convenience that I find worth the paltry $5 a month.
By leaving multiplayer features the sole responsibility of each developer you get a very hit or miss result. Some games will have a good multiplayer experience, because the developer thinks its important. Some devs will try to get by with minimal effort. Having a network where MS can dictate the basic required features ensures a consistent experience. For example: every game has voice chat because MS makes it easy to implement.
It also ensures that all the various games play nice together. Its nice that when I'm playing Ghost Recon I can get a Halo 2 invite from my buddies. Do you really think there would be this level of interdeveloper cooperation if it werent mandated by a third party?
If you dont like Live or think its a rip off, more power to you. The point of my post was lets not compare MS apples to Sony oranges.
But I say again, theres also quality of service to consider.
You can get free dialup, but I'll bet you pay for broadband dont you? Its the same internet, why shoudlnt it all be free?
Live is very affordably priced, and I'm happy to pay it for the quality of service I get.
Sometimes you get what you pay for. If Sony can pull off an Xbox Live level service and offer it for free, I'll applaud not only their ingenuity but their altruism. But I'll believe it when I see it.
Yeah lets see how good that "free" Sony service is before we get too smug shall we? Given that theres little to no infrastructure, and as recently as a few weeks ago developers still had no information about the Sony online strategy, it sounds a lot like Sonys PS2 online setup. Which is to say there wasn't one and they dumped the responsibility on each developer.
For the Sony Fanboys' sake, I hope I'm wrong. I suppose well find out at the end of the week.
Tax money being used to research green technology? I admire you're idealisem, but lets be resonable. The government doent exactly have a good track record for wisely spending revenue sources.
And then Windows branded frogs rained from the sky, right?
You're either embellishing or leaving out an important part of the story. This is completely contrary to any of my experiences with Xb360 support. It simply doenst make any sense.
Slashdot might eat up anything Anti MS, but lets be serious.
The problem with the other, cheaper gas is that they require you to synthesize crude from dinosaur bones, refine it into gas, build a pump to put in in your car..... =)
Also, way to spead some anti MS FUD. I've dealt with MS support on a few different occasions (mostly due to one of the faulty launch boxes). MS support was helpful and easy to work with.
I never said those agencies were perfect. Dont put words in my mouth. Like much of our government they have grown into unmanageable beuracracies, collapsing under thier own largesse.
That doesnt mean that the basic functions they are inteded to serve arent needed or are unimportant.
Does there need to be reform? Of course there does. Does that mean we throw the baby out with the bathwater and hope it all works out ok? No, that would be foolhardy.
What you describe is either Anarchy, or government by corporations and the wealthy. We damn near have the latter now, but that doesnt mean the former is the right path.
The problem is the Libertarians are just as much extremists as the Democrats and Republicans. They are just the extreme of a third axis.
Like any party their platform has some good planks, but is ruined by extremist philisophy. An example: I'm all for small, hands off government. But all government regulation is not bad. I like that the FDA makes sure snake oil salesmen cant swindle at best and kill at worst. Its good that the FCC makes sure that the spectrum is organized and licenced, facilitating communication.
Democrats, rebublicans, Libertarians, you name it, arent bad. Its when blind ideology flies in the face of good sense is when we have a problem.
That would be the problem with ATI. Even when they bother to write drivers, they arent very good. I've never had a beef with their hardware but they could learn a lot about software supprot from Nvidia.
His whole point is that the analogies are ridiculous. Yet these are actual arguments put forth by major copyright holders all through the 20th century. Everytime theres something new on the market that they perceive as a threat to their tidy pocket picking business model they freak out. It hasnt sunk them yet, and its not likley to. Eventually they will pull their heads out of the sand and find a 21st cetury way to make gobs of money. But until then they will whine about it like schoolgirls.
Oh and he forgot the one about how records (wax cylider or victrola)will destroy sheet music sales! It will bring the industry to its knees!!!
I has come to our attention that your Aunt Milly performed a licened work without permission at her recent piano recital. Her flagrant abuse of our IP prevented poor Lars from buying a second Gold plated Ferrari. She must stop this criminal activity immediately or face the consequences.
What are you talking about? I have two Geforce4 ti cards and both are running the latest Nvidia unified driver. How do you mean, no modern drivers? They are a web-download away.
Given that PS3 controllers are bluetooth and 360 uses a proprietary 2.5 Ghz signal, I doubt we'll ever see a "univeral" guitar. It would have to have at least 2 and maybe 3 transmitters in it. Can you say *expensive*?
I wonder what his housing costs are? Everytime I've priced apartments or houses anywhere near a "city" (I live in the southern US - we dont have any *big* cities) its monstrously more expensive that living in the suburbs. And for a smaller, uglier living space to boot.
Transportation costs suck, but are still better than the costs of living in the city.
As little as two years ago I would have agreed with you about Nintendo. They rested on their laurels for a while and it hurt them badly.
Recently though they have shown that same ingenuity that put them on top 20 years ago. The DS proved not to be just a hardware gimmick. If the Wii is half of what they promise they will have earned back alot of lost respect and marketshare.
Nintendo maybe laughing at that joke all the way to the bank.
I think you're mistaken. Congress has mandated that TVs be digital and have digital tuners to coincide with the ATSC switchover in 2009. There is no requirement that TVs be HD and no requirement that broadcasters broadcast HD.
Just because its in the spec doesnt make it so. Sony was talking up multiple layers (wasnt it up to 8 theoretical layers?)to be the cats pajamas. Then they had trouble mass producing even double layer BRDs.
Sony has a history of overpromising and underdelivering, so forgive me if I want them to put their BRD disk where their player is.
Wernstrooom!!

Thats not really an appropriate analogy.

Hey, FYI since youre giving up Sony:
Forza Motorsports for the Xbox was an excellent sim. Forza 2 will be out next year for the 360.
Happy racing.

When someone figures out how to make a buck off of "hellish frozen wasteland" then lets see how neutral it is.

Its like a regular movie.....but in SPACE!

Yeah so what? Its the same difference.

OT - I know of no next gen console named "Top of the lungs girly scream."
Well, thats the sound I make on a rollercoaster. =)
