Hal "going crazy" at not being able to logically reconcile "Hal is perfect and cannot make mistakes" and "Hal made a mistake" is also an acceptable answer.
The book and the movie are two different animals. The movie made no mention of the "Hal was following orders" subplot. Short of saying it outright, the movie makes it pretty clear that Hal screwed up and his pride demanded that he eliminate the witneses. Which, if you ask me, makes a more interesting story.
After reading all the books, I came to the conclusion that Clarke would have been better served by sticking to the screenplay.
To be fair, they are trying to stop *all of it.* They dont want you recording, they dont want you FFing through commercials, and they dont want you watching it on your PMP.
Their ideal world involved you paying everytime you consume their content, while they vacation in Maui.
The only thing more tiresome than the sterotypical American statement "We saved all your asses in WWII" is everone else saying we were late to the party.
It was almost 70 years ago, let's let it go. Evil was defeated, Good triumphed. Let's move on.
I realize you were probaly not being serious, so dont take too much offense.
Its not even a WMP problem. Its called operator error. I use WMP frequently to rip with no trouble. The drm is not set by default. This is a case of not knowing how to work the program to get the desired results. When I see a badly photoshopped picture, I dont blame Photoshop.
Even the best, most usefull, foolproof system can be brought to its knees by its users.
I dont see how you can argue this is a bad thing. Its warning you about suspicious activity. If you know / trust the app, you can install it as admin. If you are not an admin it asks for admin credentials. If you are an admin, it basically does an "are you sure" to make sure youre not blindly clicking through.
User wants new OS --> MS conspires bloatware OS so youll need new hardware --> new hardware forces user to upgrade to new OS --> MS twirles moustache
I'm not saying MS code is running as efficiently as it could be. Hell I dont think anyone optimizes like you had to back in the day when you were constrained by hardware. But that argument doesnt wash.
You're remembering incorrectly. Apple resisted color screens for quite a while, citing it as a frivilous gimmick - much like their relentless dedication to the one button mouse.
And to be fair PCs had color even before that. Just because DOS didnt have color doesnt mean it wasnt possible.
Apple has brought some nice things to the table over the years, but lets not put on the rose colored glasses.
Using your logic, does that mean that MS isnt a monopoly eitehr? There are other operating systems readily avalable.
The point he's trying to illustrate is that while neithar may be a "monopoly" they both use their extreme popularity in one market to affect and control other markets. Thats what that problem is.
Are there people really worried about "lossless" portable music? I can understand caring if the copy you play on your home audio system is of the higest quality. As far as portability goes, as long as youre listening on headphones, does it really matter? Those crappy little earbud speakers arent exactly "hi-fi."
I will admit I am one who thinks a properly encoded 128kbps 44kHz mp3 sounds just dandy. I just can't understand the disconnect between demanding the highest quality source, only to pump it through the jalopy of speaker systems.
Actually youre both wrong. The first update fixed the need to *restart* the custom sound track once the game started. It was very irritating that you could listen to music in the dashboard and it would stop when the game started. You would have to reselect it via the guide button menu to make it play in game.
The same update also enabled custom soundtracks for every legacy Xb game - whether it was supported originally or not. Unexpected bonus.
Even relatively short term archiving is a problem. There are many musical perfomances, political speeches and other historically relevant data that is already or will soon be lost. Just because no one bothered to transfer to to a more durable medium. How many books are out of print?
These items are snapshots of humanity and its a shame that they are lost to history.
Sometimes it doesnt take thousands of years to lose things we'll wish hadnt been lost.
That might be a problem if EAX was ever reliable to begin with. I've never been able to turn it on for more than 5 minutes without it crashing something. Whats really amusing is when it crashes, gets stuck on, and all your system noises sound like they're in a cave.

Yeah but thats if you go by the book.

You can't apply logic here - there is only greed.
You mean the guy from Penny Arcade? (kidding!)
You would be a third party developer. Thats why everyone is piling on this issue. Its a hefty pricetag, for zero versatility.
What do you expect we were late to the party, remember? =P

Because it will crash and burn long before that day comes. Sony is doing everything they can to ensure that.

How is this not a vast improvement security wise?
That's some nice circular logic there.
User wants new OS --> MS conspires bloatware OS so youll need new hardware --> new hardware forces user to upgrade to new OS --> MS twirles moustache

Thats really apples and oranges. WOW is $15/month for *one game* while my Live subscription is a mere $5 for any Xbox game I care to play.
I used to resemble that remark, but as I just started playing WOW I guess I cant complain too much.

I think he meant Pluto the (former?) planet, not Plutonium the element.
Fox to guard henhouse.
You think the fact that you got it as Radio Shack has anything to do with it? They arent known for quality electronics.
Which is a shame, they used to be quite good yet affordable.
Slashdot may be beating the drum, but Sony is setting the tempo.
I concede your point.
{mentally screams in horror}
At this point handing someone else the SW franchise couldnt do any *more* harm.

Yeah I agree with Dorceon - Stop playing with assholes. Problem solved. =)
