  1. Patching hardware like software on New Way to Patch Defective Hardware · · Score: 1

I see problems with this approach. First of all, with the ability to patch flaws in the future, what is to stop a manufacturer from releasing a chip with a flaw just to get to manufacturing quickly. As we've seen with software, there could be serious flaws that cause security issues. Also, malware writers could make undesirable changes to hardware and might be more difficult to track and repair the damage that is done. I am more curious about the level of security that will be used to prevent unauthorized changes to hardware. Turning hardware into software will introduce the problems of software into hardware.

  2. Re:Sorry but the list is BS on Top 10 Firefox Extensions to Avoid · · Score: 1

I agree that some ads are over-the-top in the annoyance factor. One of my favorite Firefox extensions is Flashblock. I like the fact that I can selectively play Flash animation by clicking the play button that replaces the Flash animation. I also disable image animations in about:config (just set image.animation_mode to "none"). In doing this, the more annoying an ad is, the less likely it is that I will see it. Static images or banner ads do not bother me. Interstitial ads are getting annoying and I am looking for a way to defeat those. I would also like to find a way to disable those ads that fly out (which seem to have Flash animation that is blocked by Flashblock) and block what I am trying to read. Pop-up ads used to be the scourge of the web, but Firefox has been so effective at blocking pop-ups that I am surprised when one actually makes it through (although I immediately close it just the same).

Well, for one thing many airlines removed or disabled those phones during the downturn in air travel a few years ago. For another thing, they are prohibitively expensive. Cost alone didn't deter the self-important, bombastic blowhard seated next to me on a cross-country flight about 8 years ago from talking on it for almost the entire duration of the flight, though. Mostly he seemed to laugh it up with associates and berate employees and other underlings. He was also extremely annoyed with me because I had the aisle seat and wouldn't trade with him.

  4. I don't know about this on Students Sue Anti-Plagiarism Service · · Score: 1

It seems to me that eventually every paper submitted to such a service would come up flagged as plagiarized. Since it keeps collecting papers, eventually two of them will match. How many different reports can a kid write on, for example, nuclear power? Isn't plagiarism supposed to be the direct copying of a work? How can such a system prove that the work was copied rather than just coincidently similar?

  10. DRM and Piracy on Music Execs Think DRM Slows the Marketplace · · Score: 1

I just don't see that piracy would take a big jump if DRM is removed from the content that is sold at iTunes et al. DRM is already broken and song files appear on filesharing networks. This will likely continue, however, I would prefer to receive a sanctioned, DRM-free, high-quality download for a reasonable price. I will only pay for DRM-free tracks so I could use them with any device I own or may own in the future. The real reason that these files are so readily available on filesharing networks is that once people download the file, the file is left in the share folder and others are able to download it from there. If people can be convinced to use sanctioned download services it may actually serve to help reduce piracy by keeping these files out of individuals' share folders on the various networks. The fact is I (and I believe many others) can afford to pay $1 per track, but I will not pay for something that has been intentionally crippled. Right now, aside from a few independent artists, the only way to get a DRM-free track is by either buying the CD and ripping it (and hoping that there is no rootkit or other nefarious code lurking on the CD) or through the filesharing services.

In the 1980s, Iowa passed a law making it mandatory that gas be priced in whole cents. Gas station owners complained that people would just drive over the border to Omaha to save $0.001 per gallon of gas. Their argument of course made no sense (it would cost more in gas than what one would save). At some point, they changed the law again to allow the 9/10 cent pricing and everyone went back to this nonsense. I noticed when I went to Canada a few months ago that gas is priced with 3/10, 4/10, and 1/2 cent pricing.

The article seems to assume that alien civilizations are looking just for us. A more interesting line of thought (at least to me) would be how likely it would be for these civilizations to find each other. It is quite likely that there are other places in the galaxy in which two civilizations are within close proximity -- possibly within the same solar system. For example, if Mars had an advanced civilization similar to our own we would have discovered this back in the 70's. Also, this search for "civilization" strikes me as being a tad Earth-centric. More than likely a alien race would have a concept of civilization radically different from our own. We would not be able to understand them, nor they us (and I'm not just talking language barrier here). We may not even recognize it as intelligence.

  16. Wait a minute on Near-Future Fords to Feature Windows Automotive · · Score: 1

Before passing judgment on this system, I would prefer to take a wait and see approach. It may work very well or it may bomb. Despite what people may think, Ford has an army of competent engineers and I am sure that many options were probably considered before this was decided upon. Of course Ford doesn't want this controlling critical components of the car. They have their own controls that have been well refined over the years. In my own work as a controls engineer, Windows doesn't control anything anyway. It is just used as an interface. If it BSOD's, the plant will continue running or safely shut down. Even if a Linux distro was used instead of Windows, I doubt that this approach would change. I know some people have concerns with driver distraction, but I have found that navigation systems allow me to drive with more confidence in unfamiliar cities. I can pay attention to the road without having to dig out a map while driving (which is more distracting). People tend to panic when they feel that they have become lost in unfamiliar surroundings and this can cause them to make unwise decisions. Of course, a navigation system is just a tool (and a new one at that) and should not replace the sound judgment of the driver (although the judgment of some drivers on the Tri-State at 5:00 p.m. on a weekday is questionable).
