  1. Re:Thinkpad battery good? on Battery Recalls A Blow to Sony's Recovery · · Score: 1

I would say this depends more on your definition of safe than it does on whether the battery is from Sony. Even if your battery is from Sony the odds of it hurting you seem to be around the odds of being struck by lighting (1:500,000) and much less than the odds of being murdered (1:18,000).

  2. Re:Doing It All on NVIDIA Do-It-Yourself Quad SLI Launched · · Score: 1

ATI released register specifications for R100 and R200 ages ago and there are open source drivers for these older cards. At Siggraph last week ATI announce CTM (close to the metal API for GPGPU uses). CTM opens up the register specification for pixel shaders on ATI's newest cards (x1900). This should go a long way towards having open source drivers for ATI's newest graphics cards.

  4. Treating the Symptom on Growing Insulin · · Score: 2, Interesting

Worldwide demand for insulin is forecast to soar to 16,000 kg by 2010, from an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 kg last year, because more people are developing the disease and are being diagnosed earlier in their lives

The increase in diabetes has been linked to obesity. It frustrates me that we put so much research and money into treating the symptoms and not the source. I admit it seems like a hard sell to convince people to become healthier, but I believe if there was a large ad campaign, discounts for healthy food, subsidized health clubs, and other incentives to live healthily more people would live healthier lives. It is almost always cheaper to spend money on prevention rather than a cure.

  5. cost-per-action fraud on Google's Click-Fraud Crackdown · · Score: 1

It seems that cost-per-action fraud could be a bigger issue than the existing fraud unless google is very careful. I can see people creating sites that have an action of buying some product, but make their money off of advertisements. They only pay google if someone buys there product; however, these sights would also make money by plastering ads all over their site. This matters to me because these sites would have little incentive in making a good site to sell the product I searched for.

So your point is what? Is it that all consoles should be identical so they can all play all the games? What would be the point of having three manufactures if they all made the same console? I prefer choice even if that means I can't play every game on every console.

Thanks for writing this since it saved me some writing. You get the same type of awful performance if you try to access local GPU memory with the CPU on an x86 system(PC drivers go to great lengths to not let the developer do this). That said the Xbox360 with its unified memory has the advantage of not having this problem. The only real world advantage this gives Xbox360 is that it can decide how much memory to give the GPU and how much to give the CPU. Where as with the PS3 you are basically stuck with a static 256MB split for each. I think this is a noteworthy advantage for the Xbox360, but not a huge showstopper for PS3 like this article hinted.

The fact that you didn't mention raw, dng, or tiff tells me that you don't know enough for your opinion to matter much to me. Without the formats I just mentioned many of your pretty jpg would never have existed. I don't know enough about this new Microsoft format to say whether it is good or not, but I do know that there is a lot of room for improvement to jpg like support for HDR and an alpha channel.

My gut says it doesn't trust Microsoft to properly handle an open image format, but part of me also knows it might take a huge company like Microsoft to move everyone out of the jpg era.
