why is a new platform needed? provide new and backward compatible graphics API and the same, but faster CPU (maybe multi-core, if really needed) and developers can start with their feet on the ground, running.
MS changed all their insides this time around, luckily... DX 10 is based on a familiar development API - regardless of hardware
sony said "hay lets change it all again and then make even double hard to do - w00tz cell pwn ftw n00b" (*choke*)
nintendo said "know how to develop for a gamecube? great, the wii is mostly the same, with a bit faster hardware and a new input device"
Building a desktop these days isn't much different - the last computer I built took 20 minutes to do - everything just plugs into a few spots and i had to screw in maybe 12-16 screws altogether. In fact that laptoplogic website looks pretty damn cool.
I dunno what CS degrees you know of - my program (note this was University of Tulsa - Math and CompSci dept. circa 1989-1993) taught us data structures, computer architecture, database development, programming practices, and we had to write a LOT OF PROGRAMS. We also learned bits of project management and spec writing. However, I wrote a lot of programs: compilers, assembly, SQL, implemnting algorithms... we did a lot of small-scale concept-to-implementation stuff over the 4 years.
Maybe going into a Business Analyst position any sort of Software/Development Analyst might be for you? They gather requirements and provide functional and sometimes technical specification documents for software dev shops.
...OR...
QA with a programming knowledge can garner good money at some companies these days.
Of course, seriously (not) - WHY DID YOU GET A COMPSCI DEGREE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO PROGRAM???
Yeah I read that whole "article" that was posted at LGP. Is it a little annoying? Yes (IMO) - Is it horrible? NO (Again, IMO). 1000s upon 1000s of worse things happen over this all the time.
I don't know what programming jobs you have... mine in the past 16-17 years has have been at least 60-75% coding most of the time... sometime we do spec writing or documentation. Of course, there are meetings that take up about 15% of my time.
I also still extremely enjoy software development... maybe why I always go for the senior dev position instead of project management or IT director-like positions
Such software still has copyright and can holders still persecute people for distributing without permission (not counting titles that have been put into free distribution)
Abandonware just means no on really cares to prosecute so people do it anyways.
While I'm sure their non-gameplay related stuff was decent, really... i just logged in via the GameTap client, look for games to play... and play. So, I won't miss it.
Maybe the mono devs can get an implementation of IronPython going? Then you can have Python + a damn good IDE (i was surprised how well Mono Develop is myself)
If it was an arbitrary word, I could see additional difficulties then, of course... you would have to have speech-to-text technology that can distinguish words out of noise.
some of the advanced IVR solutions (Interactive Voice Response... for like customer support or paying bills on the phone) can pick out numbers and words pretty well even under some noise conditions. so I am not totally surprised that this cracked the audio CAPTCHA.
Technically speaking, they aren't official release names - they are development code names (must like Microsoft uses). The official release "names" are just version numbers. For example, the latest release of Ubuntu is officially just called "Ubuntu 8.04".
That being said, a lot of people still continue to use the pre-release code name, even press. Even package qualifiers use the code name.

you wait... Nintendo still bathes in cash moneys.... win-win? lose-win? either way Nintendo still wins.
Then, when that is done... we can Rule 34 it!
yeah... because new scripts take *only* 5 minutes
*rolls eyes 720 degrees*

Not too much to afford.... too HEAVY, we're geeks, not body builders... sheesh!!
google finally has a use for a bigint auto-increment primary key now!!!!
politicians?
still, i wonder, i bet they could make a standard 2-seater with this concept and still get in the upper 100s for gas mileage
you're.... you're a VISIONARY!!
OK... I'll concede that :)

big number [majority share] * small number [Linux graphics market] = still a small number [-1 troll]
Abandonware != free

IL gets JITted also (not sure if python bytecode goes thru a JIT or not), even in mono, IIRC

Um... well, actually, i really have nothing to say, just wanted to continue the trend into oblivion
i like this idea... and those who can't answer the simple questions, shouldn't be allowed on the interwebs anyways
