FUCKS SAKE - people need to get over this shit. When i first discovered I could resize the text area, was I perturbed? YUP, DAMN RIGHT I WAS. I usually employ a large area by default - as I tnd to make length comments on a semi-regular basis in my IMs. I was afraid of a small scrollbar and not seeing the context of what I wrote. When I discovered the box actually GREW as my comment got longer, then all of a sudden I was "cool, ok, I didn't know it would do that" Would prior knowledge helped here? Sure it would, but the feature isn't THAT bad - even if it was to some people, making a fork off of that issue is THE MOST RETARDED THING I HAVE SEEN IN RECENT MONTHS. *facepalm*
Say what you will about MS and.NET.....NET (as the parent says) certainly has reduced DLL hell *significantly*
Also, it has become increasingly easier to "zip up a folder" of a managed app, unzip to another system and run without a single problem (unless there are hard paths in the app's config file that a well done app will detect and will 1) fix or 2) interactive ask the user "hay where is this?"). As long as you have the correct.NET runtime (which isn't anything different from any other runtime library).
COM: nightmare, in fact I found COM worse than just dealing with windows DLL modules in a C/C++ app.
NO ONE is saying that this is ok. Just saying that it is "non news" and IS "par for the course". Just because something isn't right, doesn't really make it news-worthy. Also, the artcle is a wee bit of FUD and wee bit of unprofessionalism. While the article write may be correct, they way it is presented should not even be condoned. Crap reporting... crap writing [insert slashdot stories joke here].
Hookup your vista ultimate up to a domain and you're fucked tho. The whole network management and the re-write of the TCP/IP stack, while maybe needed in the long run, wasn't tested every where.
All the systems in our office that run Vista take FOREVER to boot, esp. from the time of login to being able to do the dektop, I have seen it take 2-3 minutes before (esp. if we are away from our domain), and usually 30-45 seconds. We get lag from doing basic things like open up "My Computer" or trying to copy files to and from our network share. Our system admin sniffs traffic in the office and it's not our network... as our XP systems have no problem.
Vista is STILL a memory hog, albiet, you can improve responsiveness and memory usage by turning off eveything realted to AERO (I run a the Win2K classic style desktop right now). Sometimes exiting out of full screen programs (like full screen VMs) cause the task bar to take 10-15 seconds to refresh and be responsive. These are running on AMD Dual Core systems (2.20Ghz a core) with 3.5GB of ram! FFS, I expect better responsiveness than this. Half of the people on the office are ready to go back to XP. I am waiting for SP1 to see if it really does help, if not, back to XP I go... (Note, my home desktop is running XP - no problems there really)
ODDLY HOWEVER: My wife got a new laptop we picked up at Wally World... it is a dual core (AMD X2 1.8 GHz a core), 2 GB of ram, only running Vista Home. Hers runs like a DREAM, games run like shit on it, but it is running a shitty laptop ATI card however.
The Orange Box is a consolidation. Putting a bunch of games into one box. The innovation here, with Rock Bank, small as it may be, is providing those three separate games into one cooperative game playing experience. It provided a small innovation in social gameplay... a small innovation that resonated with a LOT of players.
Innovation does not have to be grand. Just because it is original doesn't mean it's any good.
OEM versions of Windows are WAY WAY cheaper than $200, you know? (which is what Apple would be paying for the OS if it came pre-installed) - they could charge $50 extra and probably break even or even make a tenny-weeny profit. Even if they did that, they would probably still charge an extra $200 and laugh to the bank.
In Fallout 1 you can convince the Master to kill himself when presented with scientific evidence from the BoS that the Super Mutant poulation is sterile and would not survive anyways after thehuman race was "wiped out" by them. GRANTED, you must have discovered this info from discussions at the BoS base *and* you must have a high IN to get to those dialogue options. However, it is possible, having done it before a few times...
However, it does get kudos for actually allowing my character (with a high personality stat) to talk the villain into killing himself. That's something I've never seen before.
Nah, you are right, as far as I know, it is a Win32 game only. In fact, all of their (Poke53280) games are Win32, I believe. I'm a big Linux user, but I even know, that if I want to game, a lot of it, free or not, is primarily on a console or a Win32 platform.
Hurrican is a free (as in beer) spiritual successor to the Turrican family of games. This is a fairly polished 2D, platformer/shooter game that follows probably more closely to the SNES Super Turrican game than the original 8-bit ones. But, after logging several days thru my first play through, you get: 9 big levels, 15+ bosses (give or take), lots of secret areas (I haven't found them all yet), and 3 or 4 difficulty levels. The game has been localized into most major langurages (except the final credits). Beware, it doesn't behave like after level 5 on Vista (at least on my Vista laptop), but it runs *very* well under XP (my XP desktop machine). Grab it here http://turrican.gamevoice.de/hurrican_site/ - the main developer is Poke 53280, their main site is in German, but you can probably figure out how to get the game (they have a few other games, this one is the best by far, the other ones aren't bad, just not as good as this). Anyways, most free games bore me after a day or two max. This one has kept me fairly interested for a couple weeks. Well done!
Fallout was originally going to use GURPS... Interplay and SJ Games had a falling out which cause the dev team (before they were even called Black Isle Studios) had to "quickly" change the ruleset to something else (but somewhat resembles GURPS)... thus the birth of SPECIAL.

Damn, you, I spent my last mod point last night! Well.. I'm sure someone else will mod this... (funny?)

Library of Cong... no wait... was done
How about a beowulf clus.... no... no makes no sense.
Heh, I, for one, welcome our large-capacity-cheap-per-megabyte-storage.... argh
ok fine - no one wants to hear it!
DOES IT FUCKING RUN LINUX?
silly AC, slashdot never cared about you :)
can you pay hell via a wire transfer?
Not mutually exclusive... you CAN feel bad and LAUGH hysterically. It kinda hurts tho (*ow*)

'rm' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

So, like, how many OTHER games out there does what rock band does?
Just looked it up, you are right... I keep thinking the first version of everything .NET was VS 2003, but that was 1.1, not 1.0
PUNNED!
I did NOT know that... well, I see why that couldn't happen without a bigger fee now.
more than 5 years ago?? Using ASP.NET 1.0 or ASP.NET 1.0 Beta?????

two words: play Fallout

So.... what happens if I am a programmer and can *gulp* finish ALL of those? :(
SQL Injection!!!! *ANY* SQL-based database is prone to it, if the front-end code that access the database is poorly written.
I don't know HOW many PHP-based websites were vunerable to SQL Injection with a backend of MySQL or even Oracle!
AND made 300 grand in a couple months?
