Yeah, it sure is an awful service. The connection goes out at least two or three times a week for hours on end. They throttle my torrents, legit or otherwise. Youtube is definitely slower than it used to be. And a lot of times I've noticed a page simply timeout and I have to hit refresh.

I suspect in the future when most of the world has super fast fiber optic connections, we Americans are going to be stuck with paying hundreds a month for decades old cable technology and a neglected infrastructure. That's assuming you even have the money - because by then you also lost your IT job and have to work at Walmart 16 hours a day to make ends meet.

  10. No Updates on First Psystar Mac Clones Ship · · Score: 1

I'm more worried about it not being able to update than how well it functions. The more people who pick this up, the more stories you'll hear about mac viruses and vulnerabilities. Apple will have to make a choice... if they choose not to sue Pystar into oblivion, they would need to decide if they should allow such systems to be updateable. Apple probably will not, the more systems they end up supporting, the less secure their os becomes overall.

If they choose to allow these hackintoshes to update, the more systems they end up supporting and the more money they would have to spend. Don't expect any support from Pystar or other such dealers. They run a risky business as it is. The best thing you can do when your Mac operating system becomes too unstable or too old is either buy an entirely new MacOS CD, install Windows, or install Linux.

I'm not sure, but couldn't they make digital broadcasts impossible to record on video tape and DVR? Just imagine, another marathon comes around and you're not able to record it. To my knowledge, I think it's impossible to prevent a person from recording an analog signal. Although, like an attempt at recording a DVD to tape, they can prevent you from recording a digital broadcast. This whole thing is being pushed by big media. With the Democrats coming into full control of the government, no doubt big media will have absolute control over what we see, hear, and communicate. It's not just TV, I worry about the Internet as well. In a few years there won't even be enough ip addresses to go around. You'll be browsing some filtered sub-internet via a proprietary iTV device. Mark my words.

  18. Re:PC gaming is dying on Why Aren't More Linux Users Gamers? · · Score: 1

There is a certain pride among PC gamers of their machines. A lot of the time these machines are built with custom parts the user spent the time to research. Even so, there will always be the chance that a piece of hardware may have an issue with a game. Outside of the obvious hardware-not-being-good-enough problem, Creative Sound Blaster users have had audio problems with many games for many years. Certain ATI integrated chip users may have issues playing a game that is limited to just OpenGL. And people who buy a system from Walmart and expect it to run the latest games - despite it's cheap hardware and Vista Operating system - will be sorely disappointed.

For example, I have Halflife 2 and Portal on my computer. The processor is an old Sempron and the video card is a Geforce 6100. Not new or fast by any means - BUT - I have 2 gigs of ram and Windows XP. I play Portal just fine. My next door neighbor's computer has 1 gig of ram, some Intel graphics chip, a superior processor, but also Vista. It's brand new. Portal, a graphically simple game that uses a few shaders, is so slow you can't play it on the later levels even at the lowest resolution.

For the people who don't like research, and don't want to spend a lot of money for prebuilt 'gamer' systems - consoles are very attractive. I would buy a console myself if I could play most of the games using a keyboard... but that's just me.

Nothing will change. Consoles will continue to be made and sold. Computers will continue to be a decent alternative. As for Linux - well, OpenGL is awesome, but most games are made with Direct3D.

So long as Dell keeps selling computers with Windows to institutions, the government won't have any reason to consider a switch.
