To avoid that, simply make sure the customers know they need to have an OS too. Once at home, they can install the OS themselves. Probably the most difficult part of installing an OS is looking for and installing the drivers. Other computer hardware comes with driver disks, so I say maybe computer vendors should produce special disks that install all the necessary drivers quickly and painlessly. So you chose BSD? No problem, just insert the BSD Driver Disk for your brand new Acer 5050 Laptop. These will also come in handy if you need to format... much like a restore disk without the Windows.

If you're using an obscure os though - then chances are you know what you're doing. Don't expect a Driver Disk for everything, some of you will have to go driver hunting. But also don't expect computer vendors to sit idly by either.

In conclusion, I believe this idea isn't as bad as some of you think.

  11. Re:Repeat after me ... on Astronomers Find Huge Hole in Universe · · Score: 1

If the universe curves into itself, the very center of the hole is the 'edge' of the universe. If the universe is expanding, this hole - or the distance between the 'furthest' star and the center of the hole - will decrease in size.

And the Big Crunch theory returns.

I believe the universe has two poles similar to that of a sphere (only it's a hyper sphere). If you imagine the stars of the universe as dots drawn on a sphere, when the dots move out from one point or pole, they will eventually make contact at the other. If the hypersphere were expanding, it would grow in size, and every galaxy, solar system, star, planet, and object would be ripped apart at the molecular level. That's not happening, so what we're really seeing are stars racing toward each other to the other side of the universe.

Of course, this is only right if the universe curves into itself, and if we live on the surface of a hypersphere. It could be an irregular hypershape... or a torus... or the universe could really be infinite in size. I also could just be wrong. I didn't RTFA, and I'm not a scientist.

  12. Re:So don't use them. on Comcast Hinders BitTorrent Traffic · · Score: 1

It's like that everywhere it seems. Here in Little Rock, I have exactly two choices - Comcast, or Dailup. There are other service providers, but because I'm too far from them, I can't use their services. ATT central hub is too far away, and they don't provide service to my area (but they do across the street). Aristotle Wireless is too far away. I don't have comcast because I lost service for non payment, and I have to pay them back for those last three months they let me use the service without paying.

I wouldn't mind dailup so much, but it seems the phone lines here are deteriorating. Even after calling ATT to fix the noise on my line, I can only connect at 20 to 30k. I know it's the lines, because I took my laptop to school, hooked up to a phone line, and connected at exactly 53k - which I think is the maximum the FCC allows.

It sucks being an abused consumer. It seems no matter where you go, what you buy, or what internet service you get, if you're in the US you're getting ripped off.

But yeah, that is a very good idea. Currently my university will block the ip of any infected computer automatically - including the student's wireless laptops - if it detects spyware or viruses (or P2P connections). In order to reestablish a connection, you have to remove the offender and ask them to reconnect you.
