  1. Re:Bullshot. on Why HD-DVD and Blu-ray Are DOA · · Score: 1

I could just imagine the rentals of movies on hard drives for people that don't download the movie...

It's bad enough to get a scratched DVD or a DVD with someone's dinner on it. I think some bachelors must rent DVDs as a dual use frisbee and plate for their picnics...

I would, however, like to see some solid state distribution of media eventually. And I believe in Internet distribution -- but with all the concern over copyrights it's not going to get anywhere fast.

  2. PlayStation 4 on Why HD-DVD and Blu-ray Are DOA · · Score: 1

Like a good Slashdot user, I did not RTFA. However, I'm a little confused by the summary.

At the end, there's a line stating, "Phil Harrison is already saying the PlayStation 4 won't use discs." Since the summary implies that the changeover will be to hard discs and not blu-ray or HD-DVD discs, I assumed this comment was refering to the PS4 being a hard drive based system which sounded pretty interesting to me and it's something I've never heard of before.

But, upon clicking the link I saw another slashdot summary with the following quote: 'I'd be amazed if the PlayStation 4 has a physical disc drive,' [Sony's Phil] Harrison says."

Ermmm.. Anyone willing to enlighten me? :) Thanks,

    Jeff

I dunno where you've been... Google has always been an advertising company. Search has always simply been their most successful delivery of ads alongside adwords on publisher sites.

I think you're missing the point completely. 1) companies have to make money. 2) Google has done a lot for search and has maintained their simple webpage as they promised. 3) profit -- and you yell EVIL!... sigh.

That's an excellent post. I think the trouble is that this is far from commonplace (at this point) and like the first of whatever magazine or newspaper or tv show that had ads, we (consumers) feel as though we didn't pay for the ads...

I used to hate it when I got my first subscription to PC Mag back in the day just to realize that over half of the zine was ads... Ads that I went to the free MicroTimes for when I needed to know where to buy stuff...

Over the years, advertisers have done a phenominal job of making ads feel like part of the magazine and now I sometimes enjoy looking at the page that's an ad because I don't realize it -- I'm just checkin out the hot new car or whatever it may be...

However, I'm still a consumer and I don't think that the cost of the game is low enough to justify forcing users to see ads.

nonetheless, if she does talk to me and does like the song regardless of how I initiate first contact -- with wireless I can actually ~give her the song and I think that's the gaping hole in Jobs rational...

I don't think you can jump to that kind of conclusion. And regardless of the quality of their service, it's been clear to me that Sony just doesn't believe in charging for online services. I, for one, would NEVER pay for the online service if they did charge - I think that's a ridiculous concept and I would rather see an AD for a new game or PS3 hardware product than have to fork out a monthly fee just to browse a store where i'm going to buy something or get updates for games.

I think Sony is just doing the right thing and being FAIR to their customers by not charging.

  12. Re:Define Cheating on Which Grad Students Cheat the Most? · · Score: 1

I have to agree that we need to define cheating in relation to this survey.
For one thing... How did the survey word the question?

    1) Have you ever cheated?
    2) Have you cheated at all during your grad school years?
    3) Have you cheated this semester?
    4) Have you done an act that your school considers as cheating and worthy of expulsion more than 5 times?

And to further that last one -- there's the issue. People have double standards... For example, someone might say that they didn't cheat in college, but technically there was an occasion or two where they glanced onto the persons test next to them and changed an answer or didn't change it because they "knew" they were right.

And how do you even measure admitting to copying a paper or parts of a paper? bleh.. whatever!

Oh, and I just started going back to school for my computer science degree and I almost gave the guy sitting next to me my code last night... lol.. I didn't, but it occurred to me... would that be cheating even if I don't gain anything?

(for the record - I think your conclusion about the cheating in games by 13 yr olds is totally unrelated)

CGI doesn't make the bad movie good, but it can also be used to contribute to making a good movie better. ILM is also responsible for the effects in countless other movies like Back to the Future that are seasoned classics. However, in the greater sense of movies "these days" I do agree that visual stunnery is being used for more than is needed to convey the plot line -- making some movies that could have been a 30 minute tv show into a 3 hour movie. -Jeff
