This particular company is looking leachlike but the intent of patents is positive. Without them there would be very little incentive to develope new technology. Why spend a 100 million developing a new computer chip when six months from now a competitor can have a knock off on the market and under cut your price because they don't have to repay development costs. It's one of the reasons China has embraced piracy, it saves a bundle. Most of the world is getting tired of it and they are starting to threaten trade sanctions so China is claiming they will stop the piracy. Some industries are abusing the patent system. The worst offenders are actually the drug companies. They aren't happy that patnets actually do run out so once cahs cows go generic they spend tens of millions developing a patentable alternative that maybe less effective but at least they control it and can coerce the doctors into perscribing it so they can go back to charging $10 a pill for something that should sell for $1. Technology we can potentially live without but drugs often mean life or death to people so the drug companies are playing games with people's health just to make an extra buck. What the tech companies are doing is sleazy but what the drug companies are doing is criminal and costs lives to protect profits. Billions of dollars every year goes into finding replacement drugs rather than finding new cures so they money is wasted. Trust me there's far more money going into finding a Viagra replacement for when that patent runs out than is going into an AIDs cure. There's simply more profit in it. 50,000 to 80,000 lives are lost in the US from the flu yet many years there are shortages of the vaccine because it's cheap to manufacture but has some risk so the drug companies don't see it as profitable to make, simply not worth the lawsuits.

If you have to push around massive amounts of data it leaves all other systems in the dust. The 17" machine is a great little portable editing system. All you need is Final Cut Pro and an external HD and you are ready to fly. I have a 20" Intel Mac I got for video editing. It's a great machine but the one disappointment was they didn't come with a firewire 800 port. They do have dual 400s. I'd happily pay several hundred more if they came with an 800 port. Since a lot of us are using that particular machine for editing hopefully they'll consider adding an 800.

You're too used to Photoshop. I have the same reaction to Gimp. It's a useable piece of software and blows away a lot of graphics softwares that are for sale. Unfortunately Photoshop is the Ferrari of graphics software and Gimp is more like the Saturn. It'll get you there but it's not as powerful, fun to drive and not laid out as nice but if you are trying to get to the store there's nothing wrong with it. Pro use is like being in a race and the Gimp doesn't stand a chance. 9 out of 10 people don't need what Photoshop can do so Gimp is a great alternative. If I had never seen Photoshop I'd probably love it. Once you learn Photoshop it's hard to even look at anything else. It's incredibly powerful but honestly very few people use more than 10% of what it can do. I still find things I didn't know were in there and I've been using it since it was ported to Windows.

I'll happily pay more if they have a service without Howard. I'm getting ready to pick up a system and Howard Stern being on Sirius was the deciding factor not to go with them. It's personal tastes but I graduated high school a lot of years ago and hearing him takes me back to high school in all the bad ways. I can listen to obnoxious jerks for free, why would I pay for the priveledge. Yes I know I don't have to listen but I don't care to patronize a service that promotes that kind of programming. I was thrilled when he left the airwaves why would I want to chase the guy to satelite? Too many people these days are thrilled to tell you what to think. I grew up back at a time when the general belief was we should think for ourselves. Now we are all but taught that's dangerous. I guess it's easier for a lot of people to let the government, religous leaders or Howard Stern tell them what to think. If I want an opinion I'd rather go to one of the great minds of our time and Howard just isn't one of them. I don't need him to tell me who's cool or "in". I really don't care. It's childish and pointless.

Excellent point. Truth be told I'd much rather see the color depth approached first. They've gotten better but for film level work none of them display full color resolution. Frustriating that the software will handle 48 bit, three channels of 16, but the monitors won't. Mostly becomes an issue when you are working with a lot for gradient images, skies and such. You still get some pixelation that isn't in the actual image file. Then again if you're doing TV who cares. They call it NTSC, never the same color, for a reason.

No one in Congress can remember a single converstion they've had in the last six years. Truly sad and frightening that so many could be suffering such dramatic memmory loss with no apparent cause. Lossing a couple of hydrogens bombs pales by comparison. Also the military misplaced countless tons of nerve gas they happen to dump over the sides of boats back in the sixites and seventies. No one bothered to make maps and no one seems to remember where they dumped most of it. No worries, it'll turn up eventually.
