odd i also have the 200M pciE card in my compaq laptop. the "radeon" driver works with everything except direct render. and it runs at 1280x800 my native screen resolution. Maybe it is just how Suse has everything compiled, i had horrible times trying to get X to work with gentoo. Suse seems to me to have the laptop market pretty well nailed.

as to your problem with X crashing, i had the same problem on my desktop. If i remember correctly it is part of your kernel config that is the culprit... something about ati_virtual_console or some such. If i remember it right i had to NOT compile that option at all. hope it helps.

If anything this would stiffle innovation, do you really think that ANY of the artists that became famous just up and started writing new stuff? Nope they ALL started by playing the music THEY grew up listening to. I don't know anyone who just picked up a guitar and started writing original music, it is impossible. You must first learn chording etc. from actual songs to "hear" how to mesh everything together.

Hmmm, Suse is not only good for thinkpads. My Compaq v5101US is also supported quite nicly "out of the box". The only driver issue i had was with the broadcom wireless card, and that was a simple issue to install the windows drivers through ndiswrapper. The only other thing i could complain about would be no 3D accell from my PCIe radeon card, and that is not a distro specific fault.
I have tried other distros on the same laptop, RH was ok, but didn't have network manager implemented with KDE, ubuntu had some odd IRQ issues and wouldn't use my wireless card... it recognised it and knew it was there but could not access it for some reason. Suse has alway "just worked" (or at least worked the best) for my laptops. Not to mention you have "apt-4-suse" an apt4rpm tool so you can use apt-get in suse to upgrade/ install packages.
I have heard that there is now broadcom support directly in the newer kernel sources now, i hope that my card is supported. Alas i am to lazy to search for it fr now, maybe if ndiswrapper stops working i will look into it.

why should i pay HP/Compaq for preloading my laptop with linux when i can just throw in suse 10.1 and everything but the broadcom wireless card works? suspend to ram/disk works ( had to set the suspend to ram config to force, but the acpi config DOES work just fine) HP/Compaq would probably just charge the same as a windows only laptop anyways... why would i pay for them to install linux? now i might consider donating a few bucks if they could provide a wireless driver that actually makes my wireless button light up, and/or the auto volume keys work. unfortunately neither X nor the kernel recognises the key presses.

    I call BS.

metal doesn't break unless you hit it hard? damn, why didn;t anyone tell that to my prybar? for your information, metal CAN break very easy. example aluminum work hardens, any flexing of the metal causes it to crystalize and it actually gets so hard that it can not bend anymore and it just cracks. steel is almost the same, except it takes heat/carbon content to crystalize the metal, and what is gas... hot burning hydro-CARBONS. feel free to argue with me, i work with steels aluminum and engines for a living. and also running an engine without oil WILL break it, try it and take it apart down to the piston sleeves you will see a lot of scoring and many times even cuts right through the sleeve to the cast block of your engine. not to mention the heat from the friction ( wich the oil helps cool) will warp your engine block causeing your block to warp and gaskets to not fit right anymore.
you did not notice any difference in your bike because it is a low compression engine, try running a low octane fuel through a turbocharged engine once, the fuel will actually explode on the compression stroke before the piston is fully extended on the crank. using a higher octane fuel increases the ignition point of the fuel so that the heat generated by the compression of the air-fuel mix will not ignite it. on your bike i think the compression ratio is probably about 9:1 / 10:1 on a super/turbo charged engine the compression can actually reach as high as 20:1 or higher.

no i am not trolling, i really want to know why people complain about "bloat", it makes no sense to me....
