Since he's running for President, expecting him to be rational and think about the technicalities rather than emotionally blurt out stupid things is not only important, but pretty damn essential.
Nope, being an idiot is standard for an opposition leader these days.
Australia's esteemed opposition leader the (dis)Honourable Tony Abbott made a snide remark about how Prime Minister Gillard should be going to Jakarta to talk with the Indonesian President about the boat people scare mongering^W^W problem rather than going to New York to petition for a spot on the UN security council. It was quite a shock to Mr Abbott when Prime Minister Gillard pointed out that the Indonesian president was also in New York, at the same UN conference.
yeah... because since the 60s, all NASA has done is launch probes to all of the planets, orbiters to a bunch of them, rovers on Mars, interstellar probes at the boundary of the solar system, ion drives, missions to asteroids... gee I sure wish we were still trying to put a couple of guys into low earth orbit.
Because NASA GISS and JPL have done nothing in the last 40 years.
If it weren't for JPL, flying would still be as expensive as it was in the 60's.
You cant continually perform great feats with an ever shrinking budget.
But wait, this means that Android tablets are selling, this means they're popular and useful which is not what the iFanboys have been telling us.
#2 - That includes all Android suppliers
This doesn't matter. We are counting activations and market share based on phone OS, not individual manufactures. This also only counts "With Google" phones, not every single Android device sold.
Apple gets a cut of *every* new iPhone sold.
Once again, this is about marketshare, not profit.
I've never understood why Apple Fanatics brag about overpaying for phones. I guess we should behead those who disrespect the profit.
250 million iPhone sales worldwide (pre iPhone 5). 46.5 million iPod touch units (hey, if you get to total up all Android units, we get to total up all iOS units). 84 million iPads, which by my math puts Apple at about 380 million units world wide,
Over 4 years, How many of these are repeat customers, not every phone sold is sold to a unique customer. I'd say 25% of customers bought an Apple phone to replace a previous Apple phone, When the Iphone 4S was released, this figure was around 77% plus all the phones that were returned under warranty.
If the rate of Android activations is not increasing (which is false, it's still increasing) I'll activate 380 million units in 317 days.
You have to aggregate all of Apple's competitors against them to get a figure that's appreciable
The figure is not simply appreciable, it' blows them out of the water completely. Apple's total sales of IOS devices does not account to a single year of Android sales.
Apple is doing *horrible* in sales.
Apple's market share is dropping. Despite sales increasing.
You think Apple had a good Q4 2011, you should see the Q4 Android had.
I have a tablet - I don't want a second mini-tablet that won't fit in a regular jacket/shirt pocket
Have you actually tried putting any of the 5" phones in your pocket? I have a Galaxy Nexus and even though my first impression when I got it was "Damn, this thing is *huge*!", but I've yet to find a (men's) pocket it doesn't fit in quite nicely, and the extra screen real estate is very nice.
The GNex is shaped well to fit in hands and pockets. Yep the screen is huge but the curvature makes it hard to drop.
My issue is that I dont know which end is up until I look for it.
The advantage of the 4.65" screen is that you can read more and do a lot of typing in portrait mode.
Most atheists I know have a dog in every fight. Proclaim "There is no God!" is just as annoying as telling everyone to repent. Your anti-believe in God is just as fervent as any foaming at the mouth preachers belief. I'd think that anyone that truly didn't have a religion, if I asked them about the subject they'd just say "Oh I dunno... never really thought about it." Instead you have your own religion, Atheism, and you believe anyone that doesn't agree with your faith is strange and capable of violence. If only they had the same moral compass as you do... perhaps you should try and convert them? Oh wait...
Sorry, but this is what you want to beleive, not reality.
In simple terms, it's wrong.
It is also clear, you've never actually talked to atheists.
It is an utter fabrication you need to tell yourself this in order to compensate for your own self doubt. This is a weakness in your faith, not a aspect of my lack of faith. You seem to be offended when I say, "there is no god" but I'm not offended when you say "there is a god" because I do not fear what you do or do not believe in.
I proclaim, "there is no god", I also proclaim "I dont want you to do anything". What you believe in is your business, I only ask the same courtesy to be returned and for you not to demand I believe in your deity.
Yes, whether or not you believe in god has zero effect on me as I don't believe in god. To use an analogy, your hobby of collecting stamps has not effect on my hobby of not collecting stamps.
The question is, why is your faith so weak that you are so offended that I don't believe in god.
Considering how deep Apple's pockets are, I'm really surprised they weren't able to license a better / larger set of GIS data.
It's not a question of cant, it's a question of wont. The data is out there, Landsat, IKONOS, Sensis, et al. all have the datasets available for everyone. You just have to pay for them, this is quite expensive but as you said Apple isn't hurting for cash.
The problem Apple has is overlaying and mosaicing the data together. Information on locations may come from two or three different sources and you'll need to present this to the end users as one layer AND you have to make sure it's accurate. A lot of errors in mapping applications is simply because the data was not rectified properly (adjusted to account for the curvature of the earth). Google maps had quite a few rectification issues 5+ years ago (still has a few today) but Google had the talent and invested a crapload in creating their own datasets. Apple doesn't have it's own data-sets and their users are realising you cant simply get a drop in replacement for that much data overnight.
If Apple is hiring GIS and mapping experts now... they might be halfway to Google Maps in 5 years. But I highly doubt it, Google invested billions into their dataset, they're a big partner in GeoEye and they've spent years developing that dataset.
Also, Google maps is not the best WMS/IMS available. Its simply the easiest for the everyman to use. The Google Maps dataset is also not the best, but given it's scope few others come close.
So as for Google maps, why hasn't Google released a stand alone app yet
They have, it's awaiting approval in the App Store.
Smart meter technology could have been one of the greatest real world technological green technologies we have seen in a long time. Instead some short sighted, can't see the next week because tomorrow is in the way greedy bastards ruined it to sell their customers out to debt collectors!
I dont know much about the Victorian smart metres because I live in Soviet Western Australia where the Government controls power company but I would like a device that would give me a log of my power usage by circuit. When my power bill comes in a bit higher than the previous bill I'd like to know where the extra power is going. I can walk around with a Kill-A-Watt but that will only get the stuff plugged into a GPO and not stuff on it's own circuit like the oven, Aircon, lights (most lights use feck all power, but some outdoor Halogen lights use it like it's going out of fashion).
However I'd never trust a private energy provider with the same data.
Color me surprised. I also expect campaign promises to be kept.
This isn't the fault of the Victorian government, well not directly.
The Victorian power market was privatised some years ago and it's a private corporation, Origin Energy that is sharing the data with third parties even thought the government is pushing for the new metres in every home. In this regard it was Origin who broke the law by sharing the data. Expect some political finger waggling but not too much as the Victorian government isn't due for another election for a few years.
Power and gas prices have also risen a lot over there, which is why I'm glad the Western Australian government didn't privatise power and gas over here and have some control over the price.
They did something for some reason that wasn't just to screw over the sheep. Now I can't hate them as much.
Dont worry, the sheep weren't considered in this move. It was done to save money, every cent they dont spend on making the Iphone is another cent in profit they can extract from the sheep.
So gloating that iOS or Androd was first to be pwned is useless. It doesn't tell anything about ease of hack or relative security of devices. What matters if they were pwned.
What matters is how easily and how quickly (in terms of "go to pwned") they were pwned.
A web browser vulnerability concerns me more than a NFC vulnerability where an attacker has to upload a malicious file. A web browser vulnerability can get you anywhere, you just have to navigate to a site with the malicious code. With an the NFC vulnerability, you have to have your phone centimetres from mine.
From the article about the IOS vulnerability
The security researchers used a malicious webpage to send the iPhone 4Sâ(TM) address book, browsing history, photos, and videos to a server of their choice. It was a drive-by download attack, meaning the user just has to go to the website,
So if my favourite site, IOS.foo.com gets hacked and the malicious code is implanted, it's quite likely I'd get compromised.
What people forget is that in the real world it is very, very easy to direct people to malicious sites and very, very hard to stay within centimetres of people without being noticed.
2) On a subway or any other crowded environment, it's not hard to stay that close to someone for plenty of time.
Wrong,
We are talking milimetres here, it is very hard to keep your device within 2 or 3 centimetres of someone elses for any length of time without being noticed.
Posting this from the article (which it looks like you haven't read).
The flaw had to be triggered 185 times in the exploit code in order to overcome some of the vulnerabilityâ(TM)s limitations.
OK, so they may need to attack me 185 times.
The real world implications of this aren't significant. But it's good the vulnerability has been found so it can be patched in future versions.
To give the unbiased view, a hack via website is bad, but one via NFC seems a lot worse (although one hopes you would be suspicious when a stranger starts holding your android up to his; its not exactly "stealthy").
To give a perspective from security, a hack via a web browser is worse because it's not proximity dependent and cant be switched off. An attack via NFC requires your attacker to be physically close and NFC can be turned off.
What isn't clear from the article is if this is a vulnerability in Android or in the S-Beam application used for NFC file transfers on the SGS3. But the article stated the attack is initiated by uploading a malicious file, so there are three really huge hurdles to this attack.
1. You have to be in NFC range. Depending on the hardware, this could be between a few centimetres to several metres (I think the max radius of NFC is about 5 metres but under real world conditions it's measured in milimetres).
2. You have to have NFC switched on.
3. You have to accept a malicious file.
The simple workaround is switching off NFC in the setting menu. I've got a GNex and not an SGS3 so I've never used S-Beam so I cant say if you can deny access to anyone trying to upload a file.
You really need to get a grip.
Look at your reply, once again you're posting pure FUD.
If I'm ashamed of anyone I'm ashamed of you, because judging from the utter tripe you keep posing you obviously have no shame.
As I said, you dont actually have to give Google your location in Google Maps, in fact it's set by default to deny the Maps application access to GPS and location data, you have to select a checkbox to allow it to have that data outside the maps application.
The checkbox is in "Settings - Location Services" and if you haven't got "Google Location Services" checked Android denies access to location services for Google applications. This alone proves you clearly have no idea what you are on about.
A. Google Maps doesn't record your location in any way. To find out about how your browser obtains your location, and how it protects your privacy, see your browser's Geolocation documentation using the links above.
but let me guess, the statement is a lie, right?
Sorry but I believe Google over you who've I've already caught lying.
Then again, I doubt very much you are interested in the truth and just want to rabidly attack Google for no reason. As I said, I'm ashamed of you for the both of us.
They don't let you introduce your technology in to a standard like this unless you agree to make it available to everyone. Perhaps in the future, IEEE should require people to turn over their patents as a condition for inclusion in order to prevent this kind of nonsense.
Dont worry,
There will be no FRAND for LTE or future protocols because Apple pissed in the FRAND well.
Apple have been continually avoiding paying FRAND fees. The F in FRAND stands for Fair, not Free. They've been asked to pay the same fees as every other manufacturer and seeing as they not only dont have the patents to make a cross licensing deal fair to other parties, they use those patents to sue competitors rather than make a deal.
I hope the ban goes through, Apple needs a good kick in the teeth before it realises that the patent war it started is a terrible idea.
Christ, can't we just start shooting all the lawyers and get this over with? The whole thing is an increasingly mad dash to innovation armageddon. I think no patent system at all would be better than the absurdities of this.
Lawyers are the symptom, not the cause.
Shoot the MBA's who decide suing over patents is a good business model. And make sure you aim for the head even though they'll live for 9 days without it.
Why is Apple always the villain around here? Remember that one time when Google implemented turn-by-turn directions for iOS maps app? Yeah, me neither. Besides, I trust Apple more. With them, I'm the customer. With Goolge I'm the product...with my personal information being sold to advertisers. Google already reads my email, knows my web searches, sees my RSS feeds and more. I want them also knowing where I go?
Sigh, butt hurt fanboys.
When was Google obligated to provide IOS users with turn by turn navigation?
If you're going to hold Google to that, why dont you hold Apple to all the features it does not provide to Android... I'm sure if we sit here long enough I'll think of one to use as an example.
Whenever Apple does something evil you say "Apple is a private corporation and can do what it likes" but the minute Google doesn't do something you want you lambast Google for it's evil.
Why should Google provide features and services to a platform that is not only a competitor but a competitor committed to the destruction of their Google's product and is attacking Google's partners? Google provides its services to IOS despite this because it's a good company, this does not obligate them to give you everything you want.
BTW, I'll put A$100 on the fact that much like Siri (use Yelp) and Apple's search (uses Yahoo or something) Apple's Mapping application will be 50 shades of useless in Australia because unlike Google, they don't maintain up to date Australian datasets (just like Yelp, no local data makes it as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike). Aussie IOS users had better bookmark maps.google.com.au.
They are doing exactly the same thing they did when Steve Jobs left the first time.
They have become scared, call minor change 'innovation' and loosing focus on the product.
Erm, calling minor change 'innovation' is exactly what Steve Jobs did (that and repackaging other peoples ideas and calling them 'innovation').
Apple hasn't changed one bit, they are exactly the same under Cook as they were under Jobs. It's your perception of them that has changed because Jobs isn't there. This is the problem with basing a product around a cult of personality, once the personality is gone the whole thing falls apart even if the product exactly the same (or even if the product improved). I've been telling people this for 5 years now.
The move away from Google has been planned for some time, ever since Schmit was removed from Apples board. The only difference is the reaction would have been different if Jobs had of delivered it instead of Cook. Cook has been following Jobs' doctrine to the letter, including the "thermonuclear" law suits against it's competitors (Yes, Cook has had every chance to go back to the negotiating table, he refused).
With Google Maps you don't have to give them any personal information, this is pure, unadulterated FUD. The only personal info Google maps asks for is your location and you can decline to give this to Google maps (but you cant use it for navigation). Any Application or device that does turn by turn navigation is going to require your precise (fine) location.
ah, this was probably done so they could reduce the price to make it a budget system, like they did with the PSP, ps1 and ps2 before it. You literally have no idea what your talking about, so blinded by sony hatred as you are.
Right, they released a new model with a higher price tag so they could reduce prices?
In other news, water is dry.
BTW, in case you didn't see my sig, calling someone a "hater" simply means you cant rationally rebut my argument. So nice try with attempting to nulify my argument by attacking me (an attack you give no evidence of being true) but it didn't work sunshine.
If you must know, I don't have a dog in the console race. I'm part of the glorious PC gaming master race, to me all consoles are equal, equally inferior to my gaming PC.
BTW, my assertions are also based on Sony's stock performance (look at the 5 year, they've been doing it pretty bad since the GFC and the 1 year doesn't look good either), the fact that the PS3 is finally making profit per unit and many of Sony's previous profit centres are are losing money so turning the PS3 into a cash cow makes a lot of business sense. Hate has nothing to do with it.

Mod parent down, not up.
Clearly once this technology was introduced, owning an iPhone would become compulsory for travellers who didn't want to be butt probed.
Actually, it prepares travelers to be probed. They already take it up the Jacksie from Apple, why not the TSA too.
ah, this was probably done so they could reduce the price to make it a budget system, like they did with the PSP, ps1 and ps2 before it.
