What happens when Apple decides that I should be locked out of my car because I drove past the local porn shop and they consider that a TOS violation? And how do I know they arn't going to purposely brick my key if I make after-market changes to my car?
Speaking from experience, typing qwerty is like riding a bike. No matter how many other vehicles you learn to drive, you never really lose the hang of it.
Probably because you block ads, therefore preventing the ad hosting companies from developing a history of your browsing habits with which to create better targeted content.
I'm not buying that, it is not hard for a site to get advertisements that are relevant to their readers.
Hell, this is something even slashdot gets right. Almost all of the advertisements on slashdot are geek related in some way, generally advertising enterprise software of various sorts or whatever. Slashdot also lets certain registered users disable viewing ads, I haven't seen an add on slashdot in months and I generally do not use an adblocker.
No, this is hearing. Televisions make a very high-pitched noise that only some people are capable of hearing, this is a widely understood phenomenon. I myself can often hear electronics like this, and in some situations it is outright painful.
If you were to wrap one of those televisions with a grounded fine metal mesh then you would still hear it, because it is not EMF radiation that is the issue.
I stand corrected, there is apparently a mod here who doesn't know what it means either and thought me deserving of an overrated moderation (the most overrated of moderations...). I'll clear this up:
cynical - distrusting or disparaging the motives of others.
Tom's Hardware isn't being cynical, he is being cynical. This isn't just a minor usage error, he got it completely in reverse.
Where exactly on the disc is normally unreadable, and how does it suddenly gain the ability to read the disc there? Is it controlled by the firmware of the drive? Is there anything really preventing dd from accessing those segments?
I'm not totally sure, but wouldn't this create an iso file that happened to still be 'protected' by CSS? It's just pulling bits off the disc and putting them in a file, no need for DeCSS.
Chimp tribes have been observed to go to war with other chimp tribes, and brutally kill them. As repulsive as you may find it, war is a natural activity for humans.
Who give a fucking shit what you've grown tired of? You are entitled to your own opinion and may parent your children as you see fit, but what gives you the right to make these decisions for other parents?
Stay the fuck out of other peoples business.
PS. They are not only banning games like AA, they are banning anything violent. Or do you actually believe Quake was created by the military to brainwash children into joining the army?
A first poster that actually RTFA? What the hell is slashdot coming to?!?
He's right though, skip TFA and just read the linked PDF if you want more details.

This guy wouldn't use adblock though. You see, he not only supports popups in general, he actually proposes even worse ads as a good thing. This guy is a certified idiot and slashdot needs to stop giving him attention.
Mathematically, "bps" looks like b times p times s, which is not intended.
I guess it is a good thing that humans are good at deducing things from context then. Realistically, nobody familar enough with networking to even know what b/s means will be confused by bps. This is needless pedantry.
What about bit vs. byte? The lowercase "b" sometimes means bytes, sometimes bits.
Where does 'b' mean byte? I have never seen that in literature, and the only times I've seen it written in conversations it can generally be attributed to laziness, often accompanied by a lack of capitalization at all.
Not everyone includes "pretty" in their "good game" equation. Doom can still hold it's own against modern games in terms of actual fun.
It's things like this that just go to show why windows will never be ready for the desktop.
What makes you think that theory and engineering are mutually exclusive, with a fine dividing line?

I wasn't using the word paranoid in a way that implied anything negative. I certainly consider it a justifiable paranoia.
If you were paranoid about it, why bother even giving them your password in the first place?

You want to troll on slashdot? Write original strawmen first!
Membership has benefits. This isn't cynicism, it is business. Either way you spin it though, you are pretty damned cynical.
Key word there is 'most'. Clearly that was not the type of veal he was talking about.
Damned it is delicious though...

Yes, because chances are everyone else here knows how to properly use the word 'cynical'.

You're right, a more appropriate moderation would have been a mix of Funny and Insightful mods. In a "sad, but insightful" kind of way.
Ah yes, greater variety in fart generator applications is really high on my list of features I want from a phone.
