there is a really good webcomic: http://satwcomic.com/ that gets into the cultural differences between the Nordics while poking a little bit of fun at them (and the rest of the world)
It also namedrops hetalia and some other good graphics/comics
You may not have heard of Grizzly Bear, but they have been a national touring act for several years.
Their 2009 album, "Veckatimest," reached #8 on the US Billboard 200 chart and was met with widespread critical acclaim.
I saw them a few years ago at the Fox Oakland (2800 capacity) to a fairly full crowd, so they are a little bit higher up than 'nobody has heard of them'
One problem with most of the indie groups is that there is no radio or television platform to promote them the way that radio and mtv promoted iron maiden et al 30 years ago. Groups like Arcade Fire. Modest Mouse and Vampire Weekend that have managed to breakthrough to the mainstream have been the exception.
I probably buy about 200 indie recordings a year because I do believe in supporting up and coming artists, but I realize I am in the minority and it remains to be seen whether the Spotifys of the world will actually help provide enough exposure and some income to most artists, even the nominally 'successful' ones.
Scott Adams is an uber-nerd -Therefore this is news for nerds
There is a lot of debate here about religious, moral, medical and government issues, particularly about issues which span several of these areas as this one does. This is partly because many geeks are a lot more pragmatic and forward-looking about these issues compared to the various institutions who are often decades or centuries out of touch and/or have a vested interest in keeping things as they are.
not that far from what he has already done: Alimony Tour: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2137028/?ref_=nm_flmg_slf_16
and there was something else I saw on PBS a few years back that was a sort of mockumentary that had him and a 'trophy wife' lounging around a SoCal mansion swimming pool with him saying really stupid egotistical things which ended up with him floating dead in the water while the Trophy Wife ignored the corpse and prepared to cash in. Couldn't find it on imdb, but considering his marriage woes I thought is was pretty awesome for him to do that!
That's what is so brilliant about the movie. Henlein was a good writer and wrote some great books, but his social theories were a little odd to say the least and reflected the chauvinism of the nationalist, technocratic exceptionalism of the '50s -better living through chemistry, etc that presaged the rise of the military industrial complex and corporatism masking itself as progress.
I avoided it for 15 years then saw it late night a few months ago and thought it was both spot-on and hilarious.
CANDIDE: There is a reason For everything under the sun!
MAXIMILLIAN: Objection! What about snakes?
PANGLOSS: Snakes! 'Twas snake that tempted mother Eve Because of snake we now believe That though depraved We can be saved >From hellfire and damnation (Because of snake's temptation!)
If snake had not seduced our lot And primed us for salvation Jehova could not pardon all The sins that we call cardinal Involving bed and bottle!

my Brother in SoCal had one which was great for commute, but there was no place nearby to fillup and although he did have a home unit that took regular natural gas from the pipes and compressed it, the compressor eventually broke and by then he had put >100k miles on the car, so he got rid of the car and junked the compressor.
They were probably hoping that they could diminish netflix (esp comcast) since they would all prefer pay per (every) view or non ala-carte bundles rather than a 'watch whatever you want for a low flat fee'
Netflix is one of the things that is helping keep the Media cartels at bay at this point and I am happy to have been a subscriber for the past 10 years or so and hope that Comcast/ATT get their comeuppance some day (but doubt it due to regulatory capture)
What the American public doesn't know is what makes them the American public -Tommy Boy
No one in this world, so far as I know — and I have searched the record for years, and employed agents to help me — has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. H.L Mencken
improperly attributed to him as:
No one ever went broke by underestimating the intelligence of the American Public
The novel is set in a dystopian future United States following a Second Civil War which led to the collapse of the nation's democratic institutions. The National Guard ("nats") and US police force ("pols") reestablished social order through instituting a dictatorship, with a "Director" at the apex, and police marshals and generals as operational commanders in the field. Resistance to the regime is largely confined to university campuses, where radicalized former university students eke out a desperate existence in subterranean kibbutzim. Recreational drug use is widespread, and the age of consent has been lowered to twelve. Most commuting is undertaken by personal aircraft, allowing great distances to be covered in little time.
John Brunner's -'The sheep look up' is another excellent dystopian (though not all that surveillance-oriented) novel
mod this guy up! -Interesting how it is the social hierarchy imposed by the language itself which may have resulted in slow response or communication of the problem...
Lisa: Now next week is our "state of the city" address. Has everyone finished their proposals? Comic Book Guy: Well first of all I've a plan to eliminate obesity in women. Lyndsey Nagle: Oh please, for a nickel-a-person tax increase we could build a theatre for shadow puppets. Dr. Hibbert: Balinese or Thai? Lyndsey Nagle: Why not both, then everybody's happy. Comic Book Guy: Oh yeah, everyone's real happy then. Lyndsey Nagle: Do I detect a note of sarcasm? Professor Frink: (With sarcasm detector) Are you kidding? This baby is off he charts mm-hai. Comic Book Guy: A sarcasm detector, that's a real useful invention. (Sarcasm detector explodes)

Does anyone know if this would have any effect on the arsenals of patents encumbering smartphone or apis (ie Oracle vs Google)?
