How are you not a gamer? If you buy games, and play them, you play games. That makes you a gamer. The whole "gamer" label is not a term used to describe fanbois, sad basement dwellers or the like.

Do you listen to music? Do you watch movies? Do you watch television? Do you browse the Internet? Entertainment. And so is gaming. For some reason we just feel the need to label the later. It's almost racism. :)

So, I know I am a little priviliged here: I travel enough to enjoy gold/elite status on 2 different airlines. Both are part of international airline alliances, so I get good service on a number of airlines around the world.

When I fly domestic I show up at the airport a maximum of 30 minutes before departure. That's how long it takes me to check-in, go thru security and board at the gate. Never in my life have I missed a flight. Even when I fly international, I show up 40 minutes prior to departure.

The two hours thing sound interesting, but I haven't seen it be important or necessary. Seriously not trying to come off as an arrogant prick, but even before I made gold thingie, I never had to adhere to a two hour rule.

  11. Re:Back in the day... on Terminal Chaos · · Score: 4, Informative

An hour of air travel (actual flight time) equals a day of travel by other means.

That is SO bullshit. If you're traveling less than 4 hours by air, you're quicker to take a train in any place that has a modern transit system (like europe), because of the hassles at the terminals, etc.

Sorry, but you are wrong. I used to live in Copenhagen - my family lives in Aalborg (both cities in Denmark, Europe). Driving from Copenhagen to Aalborg: 5 hours if you don't hit any congested roads. By train: 4,5 hours. Flying: 30 minutes (+ 30 minutes at the airport prior to departure). That killed your theory right there.

Because of my work, I traveled to other European countries almost weekly. It takes considerably less time to fly from Copenhagen to Berlin, Cologne, Paris, Zurich, London, Amsterdam, Barcelona and most other cities I frequent. And in none, and I repeat NONE, of those cases would it be faster to go by train, car, bus or stand in the backyard and hope to be magically transported there.

I was born and raised in Europe and there are many things about the region that I love. But traveling is not easier or different across Europe, than it is for me now that I live in the US and travel just as much. You could in some cases have a point with national travel in some European countries - but not cross border.

I'm a fairly accomplished FPS-gamer. I have participated on a high level in professional tournaments and placed in the top10 at major international tournaments a few times. Played with a Counter-Strike team that was considered top dog in my small European country for a long time, and before that competeted (for honor) in the Quake-series.

And I consider GoldenEye to be the best FPS game I have ever played.. When I have discussed the game with the competitive gamers I know, no one has ever even mentioned the N64 joypad in the conversations - but almost everyone agreed the GoldenEye was either up there or hands down superior.

I would say your observation about PC FPS-gamers as a whole is wrong.

    2. Teamwork

Actually, that depends. For a 1on1 FPS game like Quake (insert number here) or a RTS game like Starcraft, that might be true. For a team-oriented gamer like Counter-Strike that is not true, quite the opposite. 5 players HAVE to work together, otherwise they will get raped by the other team. Most of these teams practice 6-8 hours a day, 4-5 days a week. They are often spread out over vast distances, and only communicates thru a VoIP program (like Ventrilo). Take my word for it, that teaches them a lot of teamwork. If anyone fucks up while they're playing, they all get punished (by losing the round or the match). They can't see eachothers facial expressions or bodylanguage, so it can be really hard to understand humour and passing remarks. They learn teamwork - and under hard conditions.

    3. Leadership

Yeah, I guess you have a point there. Some of these guys learn to motivate and give commands, but thats usually 1 out of 5 players on a team. He usually gets quite good at it tho.

    4. 6-8 hours a day. 4-5 days a week. Playing online. From remote locations. Thats commitment. It might not be the same kind of commitment you see in the gym or on the track, but its commitment.

    5. Get laid

You would be REALLY amazed by the gaming culture these guys live in. I was something of a celebrity myself in my local gaming community a few years back, a manager of the top team in that country, and the editor-in-chief of the biggest community site for these players. I saw more action doing that, than I did while I was DJ'ing popular nightclubs back when I was fresh out of school. Every culture has their groupies, this is no exception. While you probably couldn't pick up women at a bar by boasting about your gamign skills, you can definitely pick them up from within the community just by being celeb-like. Nothing to be proud of, just saying it happened. And as most slashdotters would probably agree, once we can approach women by text, we have fairly good chances of coming of as intelligent funny people. Simply a lot easier steer conversations in the right directions, and you dont have to worry too much about being shy (or her being shy). These people are the last frontier of IRC networks, and the girls/groupies/female gamers are there as well.
