  1. I thought, why in the hell does the government want people calling them when a Windows 10 update kills everything?

My carrier offered me a discounted package with 3G speeds, but LTE latency (my phone shows an LTE connection and I don't really notice much a difference from when I had their 4g "full speed" package). Is this something similar, or is it just a straight up scam? If so, how do they call this an upgrade?

This may be tough since she is remote, but in my office I converted 60% of my workstations to Ubuntu as an experiment - and virtually no one noticed and/or cared. They use Chrome for 99% of their work, so I just loaded it into a clean ubuntu 18.10 install and moved the gnome dock to the bottom instead of left. Without knowing more about your business, I liked the increase security, but I find that even a clean windows install is so distracting. Popups, updates, little animated tiles in the start menu - it felt like it was getting in the way of productivity.

  10. ...and I don't fully get CRISPR, but if it can prevent serious diseases at birth, then I am all for it. Thanks to this guy for being a voice of reason. I know we have all this ethics crap, but if we eliminate something like Cystic Fibrosis, I don't see a downside here. If they are so concerned about humans, why are we not gene editing mice by the thousands? I'm sure I can find a few spare ones in my garage lol

this does seem a bit extreme. Probably more of a "where there's smoke, there's fire" precaution - maybe they think that everyone is smoking up and that's OK, but it seems like an extreme overreaction. Also seems like poor due diligence - if Elon hadn't lit up a joint, then they would just assume that everything is OK, even if the production line is stoned 24x7? To me, if SpaceX/Beoing/etc... are going to be responsible for restoring space flight to the U.S., this should have happened upfront, regardless of what happens in the public eye or not.

Well Affinity Photo supports layers, Psds, fonts ( which sounds silly but not all apps do), and with gestures and long presses supports a lot. Biggest issue I find is that I canâ(TM)t have two files open at once. I still prefer a desktop but on the go it is amazing

Glad to see this option for iPad users, although I have been very happy with Affinity Photo (great photoshop replacement) and Designer (great illustrator replacement so far). Maybe these aren't as feature rich as Adobe, but a one time purhcase of $30 each has made my life a lot easier.

  16. I periodically give LibreOffice a try but personally I just find the UI to be boring. MS Office seems brighter and Google Docs just seems so much leaner. I think a really nice and serious interface overhaul would make a big difference to many users.

Yes Tedla has flaws, but I think open sourcing something this important helps the industry as a whole - from creating standards, to government regulation, to potentially even having the development community at large participate - although a consortium of manufacturers agreeing on a code base that is actually secure would be more reassuring
