I will probably end up buying a Premium when they start incorporating 65 nm CPUs into them. I like the white color and I have no need for a 120 Gb HDD, and probably no need for HDMI either. Just how long can it take for MS to get the new CPUs into production?

I was suggesting: Plot contrivances in Grim Fandango really aren't particularly intelligent or interesting, certainly not up to the level of even the most ludicrous of movies.

It's a videogame. An adventure game. Puzzles are part of the gameplay. However, this does not mean that a movie of Grim Fandango would include the puzzles.

His personality was limited to making sarcastic quips.

    In your opinion.

In a discussion comparing video games to art and movies, I was claiming that Grim Fandago didn't measure up.

That's your opinion. Many people disagree.

Huh! I was suggesting: If Grim is really so great, why aren't people playing it 10 years later?

Very few games are widely played 10 years later, so that's a very unreasonable demand. Grim Fandango, being a singleplayer adventure game, does not lend itself to the kind of repeated playing that you get from Doom or Quake. Furthermore, the game was not a commercial success, and the adventure genre is not quite as popular as some other ones. However, this does not in any way mean that Grim Fandango is not a good game. It is, in fact, a classic, whether you like it or not.

I played through Grim Fandango last year.

Uh, that's not the point. I was not suggesting that someone should make an exact cinematic replica of Grim Fandango.

    1) Heroes in adventure games are basically personality-free.

Well, I'm talking about Grim Fandango, here. Manny is anything but personality-free.

    2) The genre is dead, and has been dead for 10 or 15 years.

Doesn't mean that Grim Fandango still isn't a great game, an example of what video games can be at their best, and an example of how not all games are GTA or Doom.

    5) These games don't hold much interest to people 10 or 15 years later, unless it's for nostalgia purposes. Implying there's a whole lot of advertising or technical masturbation that went into people enjoying these games. Whereas Tetris can still find addicts.

Why is this? Because the 360 only comes with a 20 GB HD and no 802.11g support. Let's try and just compare apples to apples.

This comparison would make sense if the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 were computers (like HTPCs). But they're game consoles, and they aren't compatible with each other. People buy them to play games, they don't buy them because of their hard-disk capacity or wireless support.

The PC's greatest strength for gaming is that PC gamers like better games. Even the best console games usually seem mediocre at best compared to a good PC rpg or rts.

Witness a fanboy in action. The fanboy must convince himself that the PC is absolutely superior, so he must compare all games in existence with PC RPGs and RTS', for reasons that only he knows. Fortunately, people who do not live inside a fanboy bubble understand that Red Alert can't be compared with Metroid Prime or Jade Empire.

PC gaming will only die when they start making great games for consoles. When they do that though I'll probably plug the console into my monitor and call it a computer.

Then I guess PC gaming died back in the eighties.
  19. Re:Of course PC gaming will continue to be huge. on PC Gaming's Future Evolution · · Score: 1

The first hindrance is that a lot of console games are nothing more than ports of PC games. I'm seeing commercials for FEAR on the XBOX 360 as if it's a new game. It was out for the PC a year and a half ago!

Also works the other way around . Many Xbox 360 games end up on the PC, and many games are designed for both platforms for a simultaneous release. And both platforms have their exclusives.

The third hindrance - and the most significant - is that console controllers are complete crap. Terribly inaccurate analog sticks and a bunch of clumsy buttons on a batwing? It's going to be hard to ever top a keyboard and mouse.

Console controllers have evolved for decades, and their only purpose has been to facilitate gameplay as well as possible. Very few people feel that gamepads are "complete crap." The PC keyboard was never designed for games and hasn't really changed since its birth. Yes, it is suited for many games, but not for all games. I doubt Jade Empire is going to be as enjoyable with a keyboard as it is with an Xbox gamepad.

I'm sure as hell not going to play RTS, strategy, or serious RPG and MMORPG games with a console controller.

And I'm not going to play fighting or platform games on a keyboard and mouse. Unlike you, I can accept that gamepads are good for many games while a keyboard and a mouse is good for many other games. Then again, I'm not a hysterical fanboy like you.
  20. Re:Of course PC gaming will continue to be huge. on PC Gaming's Future Evolution · · Score: 1

First of all, you're not going to play a good RTS, RPG, MMORPG, FPS or strategy game on a console.

There have been RPGs for consoles, while JRPGs almost never end up on the PC. While RTS games are an anomaly for consoles, Command & Conquer 3 is coming to the Xbox 360 (there's really no reason why RTS games can't be played with the X360 controller). First and third person shooters, very succesful ones, have been made for consoles for ages. I don't know about you, but I want to play Gears of War, Rainbow Six Vegas and Advanced Warfighter. The reason why I'm not playing the latter two on the PC is because mine is too old and upgrading it is far too expensive. That's a major disadvantage of the PC.

How are you going to play Civilization IV on a console

How are you going to play Metroid Prime on the PC? How are you going to play Twilight Princess on the PC? How are you going to play any of the numerous console exclusives on the PC?

Who wants to play an FPS with a crappy controller and "auto-aiming"?

A lot of people. I guess you haven't heard of Halo or Gears of War. Personally I found Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime to have excellent controls that gave me no difficulties at all.

Not to mention, better graphics, performance and a more intimate connection to your peripherals.

Yes, eventually the PC always has the better graphics, but you can't seriously be claiming that GoW or R6V have poor or outadated graphics. As for performance, I don't really know what you mean by that. I get lousy performance because of some obscure hardware or software glitch that I haven't been able to eradicate even though I've switched every component I have. I usually have to tweak settings to get a good balance of graphics and performance. On consoles I don't have those problems, the games just work and they have a minimal amount of framerate issues.

Sitting with my very agile mouse and keyboard in front of my 30" LCD is far more enjoyable than sitting on the couch with a poorly designed controller in front of my 65" Sony SXRD.

Poorly designed? Because it's not as good as a mouse for FPS games? Yeah, that makes sense.

they aren't as convenient or fun.

Wait a minute... am I being subjected to an elaborate troll? One of they key benefits of consoles is that they are much more convinient than PCs. It's hardly even debatable.
