Unless things drastically change (price gets cut further, and Wii dies) I don't see myself ever buying one. I have a shitty TV, and a PS2. I don't really care for HD movies right now.

Luckily, got 15K grant, + 6K scholarship. That takes care of 1/3~ of my school costs(not including the large sum i've paid out of pocket already), hopefully I can get some more scholarships and grants to help further. Also this. is a pretty good one. Just some googling will bring up a swathe of articles claiming statistics, usually up to 50%, so at the very least you can use those, or figure out what studies they use.

Personally, I've got a widescreen laptop, and the added screen real state made me start wondering if I should switch to two monitors to increase it even more! Now I have an old CRT screen to the right of me, usually it has all my documentation/references open while I work. For art programs, especially, it is just unbelievably valuable, been thinking about getting an LCD screen for a while, because the CRT is currently too bulky and too small to place where I want it to be (its like 2 feet away, not quite how most people use it). Not to mention, during breaks, I just switch the secondary to watch TV on it, while I can still do small bits of work.

Yes I'm productive during my breaks as well, its easy when you do something you enjoy.

The reason I don't even consider switching my primary machine to any flavor of Linux or OSX is the same reason I'm not in a hurry to move to Vista. I have a lot of software that I depend on, and the software is either unavailable or unsupported on Vista, OSX, or any flavor of Linux. Eventually, I will move on to Vista, not because Linux/OSX sucks, but because, like I said, I depend on software to just work. Yea, I;m sure I can find a Mac version of Linux replacement, but I don't have the time to learn everything from the ground up again. Just like a console, the supported software available for an OS is what I ultimately use to decide whether or not I should switch or stay. Right now, its WIndows XP Pro, soon enough, it will be Vista. Maybe someday, it will be Linux. Oh, and before yall say "how about apple?!" that is where I started off, from the early Performa, to early OSX.

  13. Re:The Problem Is With The Students on What Game Companies Want From Graduates · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've seen this problem myself, you get the for-profit colleges promising the world and more to a few kids who don't know the first thing when it comes to developing games. I'm attending one myself, and in our very first quarter we had tons of people, who hadn't the slightest clue. Myself and another classmates came from a modding background, so we had a good idea of what we were getting into. We have lost beyond 50% of our initial classmates as the quarters roll by (now about halfway). The students who came after us are no better. Game companies don't really have to worry, the people who don't know what it takes are generally filtered out in the three years or so it takes to get a degree, or if they do graduate, they will stand out amongst their classmates. If an employer is competent, they'll be able to see past the garbage. The problem is actually in modding too - how many times do you see people in mod sites talk about an awesome mod (so awesome, he can't tell you specifics) ask for a massive team to do all the work and just listen to him? Yes, these projects die, fail, crash and burn, and so do people in game programs who don't know what they're getting into.

I'm not going to pretend to understand what the hell Ballmer means by all this, but isn't it far more likely that there is Linux/GNU's code in windows than windows code in GNU/Linux, seeing how one has source code public and the other doesn't? And even if they find "the same code" in both, is it still not more likely that this code originated from GNU/Linux, and was subsequently used in Windows? And if anyone is willing to clear this up for me, when he says linux, does he mean the GNU Project + Linux Kernel or just the Linux Kernel, or does he even know what the fuck he is talking about?

The developer sends footage of the worst/extreme content in the game, and fills out some paperwork. They are assigned a rating (developer can resubmit or appeal). Then...when the game is 100% complete ready to go to the shelves, ESRB gets another copy, and plays a bit... and if there is anything more extreme in that final game than there was in the footage (ie, topless chicks, more gore) the developer has some penalties slapped in their face. Its a good process, and it works pretty damn well, and it is certainly better than this pos "Truth in Ratings" act. Whether you agree with the whole GTA/Oblivion issues is besides the point. Nothing is foolproof, but if the worst we've gotten is anatomically correct nipples and disabled content, I think they're doing a damn good job.

I honestly don't expect much innovation from the 360 or PS3, and not much really for PCs either. However, I love my DS for all the unique games available on it, and I look forward to getting a Wii for the same reason. That being said, I think most innovation in the future will start on the PC platform, or on the 360 (XNA!). That would be due to the ease that indie developers can get up and running. Look at Portal and DEFCON.
