I've had to compile libraries from source on windows, and it is a pain in the ass. Some libraries will be nice enough to give you an installer (like QT4) but others are 10x as hard to install in windows as in linux (such as FLTK)
Why don't these huge stores buy servers that can take the strain? sure, they may be ridiculously overpowered for most of the year, but being able to function on black friday is extremely important for their bottom line.
Due to changes in the driver stack, it's likely that vista will never have as good of 3d performance as with XP drivers. Most of the video driver runs in userspace on vista.
