Most DivX files use MP3 audio formats, but afaik this is not the only choice available at encoding. There is a video codec specifically for DivX, but it also functions as a container format.
There are no such thing as "DivX files". There are AVI containers containing DivX video.
Yes, there are plenty of AVI files with DivX video that don't use MP3. Many people choose to use Vorbis, and there'd be no reason they couldn't use other formats.
The closest thing MPEG-4 has to an "MPEG-4 video" standard is MPEG-1/2 video codecs. It also has an additional specification for oddly-shaped streams, which is an extension of the MPEG-1/2 specification.
You'd almost think that MPEG-4 is an evoultion of MPEG-2 for online and low-bandwidth content, wouldn't you?
Additionally, any other video codec that meets the specifications for bitrate and video quality can be used (which includes most Sorenson codecs, though the codec has to work with MPEG-4 in it's streamable format, which isn't always the case with Sorenson (which tends to be 'streaming', rather than 'streamable').
Yes, making your video codec comply with the MPEG-4 standard would be considered part of the process of writing an MPEG-4 video codec...
You're struggling with the whole "Sorenson are a company that write many different video codecs for many different video formats" concept...
The reason people think of Sorenson and QuickTime as being interchangeable is because most people only need QuickTime to view items encoded with Sorenson codecs. The majority of other QuickTime-created content is viewable in most other players.
As I said in my original post, people are wrong. I can understand their reasoning for thinking as they do, but that doesn't make them right.
Not only is AVI a container (actually, it's not, really, just a bastardized file extension that's been reused for a dozen or more different formats, the actual AVI file format is rarely used any more), but so is the QT.mov format, and DivX, and MPEG-4 (especially since QT6 is based on MPEG-4, which is based in part on earlier versions of QT, and DivX is based on MPEG-4).
DivX is not a container. DivX is a video codec.
The MPEG-4 container is based on QuickTime's.mov container.
QuickTime 6 isn't "based on MPEG-4". QuickTime 6 introduced Apple's implementation of MPEG-4.
MPEG-4 audio, which you mentioned at the beginning of your post, can be anything, including MP3 audio, just as MPEG-4 video can be Sorenson-encoded video that can't be viewed without a Sorenson codec.
No, the MPEG-4 Audio specfication calls for AAC audio.
Also, like I stated in my original post, Sorenson are a company. There is no single "Sorenson codec". For example, Sorenson provide an MPEG-4 video encoder that is arguably one of the best available.
So why don't they release it DivX encoded with MP3 audio, huh?
Because, on this occasion, whoever authored the clip decided Sorenson Video 3 with MPEG-4 Audio provided the best quality for their target filesize.
When people talk about Quicktime, they mean sorenson codec.
Well then, people are wrong. QuickTime has never, ever been codec-specific.
Also, Sorenson are a company, and they've made more than one codec. There is no single "Sorenson codec".
You can convert it to AVI, but without compatible codec it won't be any useful.
AVI is yet another container. 'AVI' does not mean 'DivX', just as '.mov' does not mean 'Sorenson Video', no matter what these people you refer to may think.
That's why QT sucks and will continue to suck, no matter how greatly improved it will be.
This is where you don't know what you're talking about.
You're an idiot yourself.
This is where you're a pot accusing a kettle of being black, although the kettle is actually quite clean.
"...in 2001, Michael Dell told BusinessWeek that Apple should liquidate all of thir assets and close down shop."
It was actually 1997. Apple of 1997 was a very different company than Apple of 2001. In 1997, Jobs has just taken back power, and the iMac had yet to be released...
So what's the story -- can you go from Luddite to pin-up in one step?
I'm an Australian, and let me assure you - he can't.
A man that thinks broadband is just for games, introduced unworkable Internet censorship and thinks Telstra is doing a good enough job to become 100 percent public is still a Luddite.
Oh yeah, because Placebo, Radiohead and Coldplay haven't been heavily marketted by major labels or television or magazines. They're practically unknowns. You're such a rebel independent.
You've totally missed the point. Those bands may be heavily marketed, but it makes no difference if you're only paying attention to the music.
"...and Konq 3.2 (Dec 2003) will have things that Safari 1.0 won't have."
Considering Mac OS X 10.3 is due out by year's end, a new version of Safari will also be available; every Panther development seed has included Safari 1.1.
With this in mind, it's likely the discrepancies in the two browsers will remain minimal.

Uncompressed audio ripped from the CD is going to sound better than ATRAC compressed audio.
...but a real Mac still looks much nicer, as demonstrated here.
Hail to the thief, indeed.
Clicky clicky.
Right now, 1 EUR = 1.17USD.

I don't know what weird dialect you're talking about.
The BBC can't, though. But the BBC isn't everything.
You keep talking, but you don't seem to be saying anything.
Nintendo Australia are flaunting it on their front page right now.

What version of Konqueror are you using?
Looks like you're in need of a KHTML update.
Listen to music, not the advertising.

"Shame there is no 64-bit OS or applications for it. And I seriously doubt that it scales like a pair of Opterons."
Thanks to your bulletproof evidence, I am a believer! Go AMD!
I didn't even use the word "Apple".
"And I seriously doubt that it scales like a pair of Opterons."
Yeah, because AMD know so much more about scaling high-end systems than IBM do!
Yes, but even taking that into consideration, it still doesn't appear to work anymore.
I've just tried that in Panther, and it doesn't work anymore.
Looks like Apple have cleaned up that little glitch...
And do their annual reports actually include their competitors' beers?
Where are you getting this information from, anyway?
