thanks for the clarification. I wasn't aware that it only had limited backwards compatibility. Still, I do own a dozen gba games and have a *cough* flash card for gba games, so to still have access to that entire library of games, of which there are probably close to a thousand? (based on the release of gba roms, which are up in the 1700s i think now, but many of which are simply localized versions of games)

  4. Re:Advantage: Nintendo on 400,000 Additional DSs Available by Year's End · · Score: 5, Interesting

just in case anyone is not aware, the Nintendo portable systems are the most popular consoles on the planet. I don't have the hard #s in front of me, but I think there are probably twice the # of GBAs owned by people than Playstation 2s. And we all know how much of lead the PS2 has on the xbox and gamecube.

Does this mean the PSP will be doomed because the previous generation of handheld gamers are used to nintendo? Certainly not. As technology increases and people become more tech-savvy, i think people start to lose more brand loyalty and start going to the items that have the features they want. If the PSP is what someone is looking for in a handheld device, they'll pick one up. Similarily for the DS.

The one big advantage I see is that the DS can play all previous gameboy games. For those millions upon millions of people with GBAs already, the DS gives them a new system with new and innovative games, and a way to play their old games too. Don't underestimate that. Hell, that may be one of the reasons the Playstation 2 has done so well throughout the years, even though it's graphics technology is inferior to the other consoles... Food for thought

  6. The next 'bitorrent'? on Decentralizing Bittorrent · · Score: 0

This has real potential. My opinion has been that "Bitorrent" is the next "mp3" as far as revolutionizing the internet and the way we have access to files. However, this seems like an even more 'secure' version, so people can download with less worries from the RIAA and MPAA for their illegal activities. If it's like Suprnova, and being developed in Europe somewhere (out of the reach of said organizations) then there is a good chance that they won't be able to slap many injunctions on the creators. (not that they've been successful with bittorrent yet, but you know they'd love to). I'll keep my eye on this.

As a fellow Ex-DAOC addict, i concur. This game has grabbed me by the gibblies and isn't letting go. That being said, it also seems very friendly towards more casual players. The plethora of quests that oftentimes only take 15-20 minutes to finish, along with the rest state (only a bubble of double xp for each 8 hour period you're not on, but still adds up quick, especially if you're truely playing casually) makes the game move along at a brisk pace. Good review by the poster.

I think WoW is going to hang around as a fun game for a while, but is this really a surprise to anyone? People STILL play diablo 2 and starcraft religiously and how long have those games been out? blizzard is a artisan crafter of video games.

bah this wasn't worth modding down

I think it's a valid point that Valve and co didn't actually upload the file themselves. They've simply devised a way to determine whether a copy being played (more likely easier to check through a CS:Source connection than Hl2 single player) is legit or not. Then they can keep track of said players (because my guess would be that these fake steam programs require a real steam "ticket" to start the process, thus showing who you are)

  12. Re:Nintendo on Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Launches · · Score: 0

Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo still do this. Oftentimes now you see it as them purchasing the company (Bungie or Rare in the case of Microsoft) or hiring a company to create games on specific console "franchises". I can guarentee Retro isn't allowed to take their Metroid games and port them to another system, even though they developed it seperately from Nintendo. I'm not sure what kind of money changed hands for Team Ninja to make Ninja Gaiden for only the Xbox...but I'm certain that this was the case. There are many other examples (Grand Theft Auto is always released for the PS2 first?) so this really is a moot point.

Online gaming has trancended it's quake DM free for all beginnings to a very complex community in a wide variety of games that is tightly knit. Something like these drivers has the potential to fully undo the entire community. Just look what the aimbot did to Unreal Tournament.
