  2. Re:what a waste! on Mount Everest Gets 3G Service · · Score: 1

Climbing everest is not about pushing any technological envelope, it's about having the money, time, and determination to actually do it. Hundreds of people have successfully climbed it.

If anything, I believe you have it backwards. Technologies developed as a result of surviving in adverse conditions (such as SCUBA) have been used to climb Everest. Some have even climbed it without the aid of supplemental oxygen!

I may be wrong, but I doubt the person in question was attempting to climb the mountain except for the most selfish of reasons.

So, they're looking to subsidize the revival of the American rare earths industry?
It's not like it will evaporate out of the ground if we aren't mining it. There's no need to destroy the environment with unnecessary mining and waste money for digging's sake.
If the price goes up, we'll just start digging again. Just like every other mining cycle.

Let's face it, Canada could not exist without the US as a neighbor. This is also what keeps Canada from becoming a great country (talented people have no monetary incentive to stay in Canada when you can go to the US and make real money).

  19. What about CO2? Solar maxima? on Global Warming 'Undeniable,' Report Says · · Score: 0

Ok. Maybe the Earth has warmed slightly in the past 50 years. After all, it has been a while since the last major ice age. However, what has happened in the past 50 years (where they have fairly good data) is a small blip in the time period since the last ice age. Calling it the hottest year on record (maybe it is the hottest in the past 50 years) and saying the data is irrefutable is just irresponsible.

What I want to know is if the people writing the report are still trying to blame CO2 for this temperature increase (even though some of the largest solar maxima occured during the same 50 years studied).

Well, I am waiting for the report to finish downloading (I wanted the high-res version).
