If there is money there someone will step up. Yeah a making a game base off a movie will sell 2M copies, but how much did you have to pay for the license? And look at how much the Warcraft trademark is worth now, and that came from a strategy game which is a niche market.

Game companies would be stupid not to make niche games. Just like how hollywood makes artsy films. Sometimes they lose money, but sometimes you can create an entire francise out of it.

Pay attention. The movie companies basically said, no DRM, no HD. MS doesn't want to be in a situation where windows doesn't play HD, but apple computers do. Makes them look bad you know? Anyway, DRM isn't that big a deal. No one is forcing you to buy DRM'd movies. Hell, I'm sure you'll even be able to pirate HD movies if you've got the bandwidth for it. All its going to do is prevent you from buying HD movies at walmart and making copies for your friends (which is fair). It will also prevent you from making backup copies and transfering HD content to othe mediums (which kinda sucks). But we all know the limitations (can't copy) and advantages (HD without having to download for days from a torrent) of DRM. You can choose to buy it or not buy it.

If I try to steal a heavy object but then drop the object on my foot, breaking my foot, should I then not get charged for theft because "I've already suffered enough?"

The person that got in the accident may think the accident was caused by some animal jumping out in front of him, or hitting a pothole, or bad road conditions, etc. to rationalise that it wasn't his fault. The ticket underlines the fact that if he hadn't been speeding it may have prevented the accident.

And yes if you go 1mph over the speed limit you can be fined. It is the _maximum_ speed not the recommended speed. Of course the radar has a margin of error so if a cop did write a ticket for that you could contest it and you will be found not guilty. But as soon as you exceed the speed limit you are breaking the law.

I think GPS is a bit much, for logistical reasons and for privacy reasons. But I am completely for photo radar. If everyone drove the speed limit instead of constantly changing lanes to try to pass everyone, traffic would flow much quicker. And sitting stationary for an hour because of an accident up ahead wouldn't be as frequent an occurance. And the icing on the cake would be the fact that we'd be burning less fuel if we all drove the speed limit. The only reason not to use photo radar is that a lot of people think its somehow "not fair" that the law actually gets enforced. And these people vote out any politician that tries to implement it.

That may be, but I've had IE7 lock while testing a site I was building. It was due to some javascript constantly resizing the page. Didn't have any problems with it on any other browser (even IE 5 and 6) just IE7. Took me a while to figure it out too, since if javascript is running a long time most browsers will pop up with a message about javascript taking a long time ad giving you an option to stop it. Not IE though, it just keeps chugging away at it, buttons unresponsive, screen not repainting. Only Ctrl-Alt-Del and end task will stop it.

This wasn't me intentionally trying to screw with IE7 either. Just that IE7 fires onresize a little too much and freezes up if there's an endless look in js. Its a pretty shoddy browser.

See this is where MS is stupid. They are making things a lot more complicated than they have to be. MS offers the upgrade version for two reasons:

    1) People that have XP don't want to lose their files and apps when installing Vista
    2) XP is good enough that people don't want to pay the full amount for Vista which is arguably only marginally better

So this upgrade fulfills reason #1, but for people that are in group 2) that want/need to do an install from scratch, they are making things more complicated than they have to be. All they need to do is have the Vista upgrade DVD check for XP on the HDD. if its there then check its key and upgrade. If its not then do a full install and when it comes time to enter the product key, prompt for both the customer's Vista key _and_ their XP key. Why would they force the customer to reinstall XP before installing Vista?

I think I'll just keep using linux where the upgrade disc is the same disc as the full install and niether require any keys at all.

  20. Re:Please explain on MySQL Falcon Storage Engine Open Sourced · · Score: 1

You're very wrong about MySQL. Its not a mish-mash of code, they're basically just keeping the interface separate from the storage. This means you can write your queries without thinking about what storage engine you're using and choose your storage engine without having to thinking about how people are going to query it. This gives MySQL a huge amount of flexibility. If you're building a webforum and want speed, but aren't really worried about transactions, you can use MyISAM. If you are doing something serious and need transactions then you can choose InnoDB, or someday, Falcon. And what's really cool is you can mix it up and have InnoDB for some tables and MyISAM for others all within the same database.

And why are you upset about having plugins? would you prefer to have all kinds of features you don't need all there by default? If that's the case you must work for MS.

There are disadvantages to MySQL. But keeping the storage engines modularised is not one of them. The fact that you identified MySQL's greatest strengths as a weakness marks you as someone who hasn't even tried it. You are in grave danger of becoming a database snob. And there's nothing worse than a database snob.
