  1. Re:Idiot... on No Right to Privacy When Your Computer Is Repaired · · Score: 1

I'm surprised that noone has thought of the seemingly obvious reason as to HOW they found it. Here's what I think happened:

Guys are installing drive... need files to test drive. Don't want to just throw the shortcuts on the desktop on the disk to test it, since they actually want a full burn. Guys know that video files are big.

Guys then go to Start - Search - for files and folders. Guys search for *.mpg or *.avi. Thumbnails for bunch of child porn videos come up. Guys call police.

In that situation, they're not hunting through his 'my documents', but using the search tool for one or two big files instead of dragging half of the 'program files' folder to the burner.

I had thought of that, but only after I had posted. A creature that's living a full 1/3rd of it's lifespan in addition to it's regular lifespan has GOT to be at least a bit visibly different than say... the usual 200-year old type.

I may be mistaken, and it may well be nigh-identical to every other one out there... but if the shell alone can tell you how old it is, surely they must have a 'quick-test' to at least give you a ballpark age that leaves it alive, before you go and smash it with a hammer. It's like seeing a psychotically massive redwood tree. The first thought that would come to MY mind wouldn't be to hack it down to find it's age. Perhaps run a few tests if something looks unusual about it.

Scientist 1: Look at this... the oldest known living creature on earth.
    Scientist 2: Let's kill it.
    Scientist 1: Agreed.

I mean seriously... they couldn't wait until it died naturally? Or failing that... with all of the scanning technologies available nowadays, they weren't able to look at it's shell without killing it? Or take a tiny sliver of said shell?

I'm probably just not understanding the methods required to find it's age... but seriously, if I were to find the oldest known living creature in existance, I'd probably create an artificial home identical to where it was and leave it there for however many generations it takes for it to die naturally.

  12. Re:Murder = OK? Are you kidding? on Database Finds Fugitive After 35 Years · · Score: 1

Right, because murderers are known to constantly plead 'guilty', and in no way, shape, or form try to deny it in the slightest.

If she was framed and actually is innocent, that sucks and all. Unfortunately, the judicial system is all that we've got, and if that system thought she wasn't framed, there's not much that can be done. Perhaps after this many years, I could see them reaching a middle-ground of sorts, in that there be a second hearing. With new technologies and techniques... if she is still found to be guilty, back in the slammer. If she DOES turn out to be innocent, then the system can pay her whatever they pay for someone unjustly imprisoned for several years.

It'd be win-win. On one side... murderer goes back to jail. On the other side, if she's innocent, she gets compensation. The system can't afford to start making exceptions when a guilty person escapes prison and they just decide... eh... let 'em go. When you get to that point, you might as well just do away with the entire judicial system. Either everyone who escapes prison is thrown back in when caught, or you'll have a MASSIVE grey-zone of people pleading that they should be 'left free' after they escape.

And there WOULD be a ton more escape attempts if it became known that the system will just let people stay free.

There were about 3 votes for deleting it... from people who admitted that they had never read the webcomic before... and tons of votes to keep it.

    It of course got deleted.

From what I see of it, of the thousands of webcomics out there... if yours is one that the tiny admin population does NOT read, you might as well just delete the fan-made article yourself.
