Ah, but if you read the article, this is where the author says the problem is. Not so much that standards exist, but that companies are getting together to make "false" standards, to make they're product look better and secure IP and with it cash flow.

Your Cell phone example is a perfect example of this, I'm willing to bet cash that every one of those cell phone companies claim their format as a "standard". But isn't the definition of a standard, as something that is widely recognized as being true or correct? So who decides something is standard?

Did you vote on something to make it a standard?

Or do you think some corporate lawyers in a room somewhere decided "Hey if we make a committee of '3rd party represenatives', send them up to the lake and get them some nice things, we'll get them to declair our companies IP as a standard increasing our share-holder confidence! PROFIT!"

See thats where the problem lies, the "standards" aren't really standards and they aren't being established for the good of the people the are being made for the good of the corporations bank accounts.

I was never comparing Mozilla to Opera or IE. I was referring to the point that Mozilla is NOT optimized for the MAC. it was written originally on a PC and ported to the mac, so I assume it lacks a lot of optimizations that a browser written/optimized for a mac would.

With all the features they would have to wade through to update mozilla to their standards it would take years. Not to mention mozilla changes very swiftly. For compatibility reasons its a good idea for them to pick KHTML, because its smaller, would take less time for them to optimize for their platform. Nothing is stopping mac users from continuing to use Mozilla if they are interested in bleeding edge web technology.

The point is choice is good. If people are interested in smaller browsers with less clutter (note, size does not always equal clutter/bloat). My only problem with mozilla is the UI bloat. I could care less if IE or Mozilla eats 50MB of my RAM if it works faster. I have a GB of RAM and the only time I use all of it is when I am rendering large scenes in MAX or editing large images in Photoshop/GIMP. But thats my opinion and like assholes, everyone has one.

Open SOurce is a lot like evolution, there are hundreds of projects out there and a lot of them overlap, the successful ones thrive, mutate, and become bigger. The unsuccessful ones whither and die or become incorporated in the bigger ones to help them grow. Besides if Mozilla was the answer to everyone's needs why would anyone bother making KHTML in the first place? Someone was disatisfied with the browsers available and made their own browser. Lucky for us its open-source and everyone can learn from its technology.

    Open Source needs Open Minds.

I'm sorry but Apple is doing what any good business would do, its looking out for its own interests. But I fail to see how this hurts Mozilla. So what mac users can use another browser. COMPETITION IS GOOD. maybe this will get those Mozilla monks in gear and start making their browser SMALLER instead of adding X more features that I don't need.

I agree with you about cheating being wrong on online games, but as a developer I could care less about how people cheat on single player games I make. Sure I put lots of time and effort into that game content but you know what? That's why they pay me for it, if a gamer wants to cheat and shorten his experience, hey its not my $50 he spent...

But also consider the other applications here. I've never owned or created a bootleg of a console game, but I own 2 mod chips, one for my Playstation and one for my Sega Saturn? Know why? I import games. I like playing games enough that I'm willing to sit down with my rudimentary japanese, a good Japanese-English dictionary and puzzle through them.

You should really save your self-righteous fury for an issue that matters, and unless you make video game content please step off the soap box about the moral implications of cheating. Most developers put "cheat codes" in their own games for internal testing because when they want to test a certain aspect of the game they don't want to have to go through the whole damn thing on their own. They also know that people outside the company do indeed get the codes, thats why they make them interesting, like warcraft 2... Further proof to feed the engine that says the RIAA/MPAA are paranoid and greedy.

Biting the hand that feeds isn't particularly the smartest move they could make, I mean it is retailers that sell their product, and they are the reason that retailers went over to selling used CDs on the side. It allows them to get by the high margins that the RIAA/MPAA set. If the RIAA had reasonable pricing that still allowed for the media retailers to put a comfortable margin on top for their operating costs and keep the prices under $15 (which we all know they could) then there wouldn't be as many shops going the used CD route.

There is plenty of room for everyone to make money, but the RIAA isn't interested in sharing, by keeping prices artificially high the RIAA makes it so that only the very big chains can afford to sell their products and actually make money (through bulk orders). They choke out the smaller stores, and then only have a few large, very sue-able, entities in which to do buisness. THis way they can control the distribution almost as much (if not as much) as they do the production.

but thats just my take on the situation.
