  2. APEC summit on Chinese Military Hacked Into Pentagon · · Score: 1

The APEC summit is going on at the moment in Sidney. This 'revelation' is for Bush to have something to talk about with Hu Jintao. I suppose the purpose of the american military is to create global talking points and conversation starters. I wish I could employ such an organization for my dates.

  3. only on earth on Pitch Perception Skewed By Modern Tuning · · Score: 1

So.. a minuscule amount of people with accurate pitch sensing ability are screwed because of human invention of a modern western twelve tone system, to which they are forced into. The technology shapes our realities in a way where we are being tested against rigid and arbitrary standards devised by ourselves. Sounds like a normal day on Earth, whose inhabitants seem to have the amazing ability of locking themselves into their own mental labyrinths.

  4. Re:Or maybe... on Interstellar Dust Could Be "Alive" · · Score: 1

Imagination is part of the structure of the universe, which however is vastly more mysterious. Imagining things makes them true, because they have a solid form of existence in our mind, although these vibrations can rarely be shared with each other directly, and we have to write comments on Slashdot. The theories one can come up with are based on the amazingly narrow view of the vibrative complexity, the space to which we have grown, and of which the humans have formed their own reality, which is mostly filled with the complexity of our own self.

  7. Re:Dejavu? on Music From DNA Patented · · Score: 1

I think it would be interesting for you to check out "NASA space probe recordings" and "Symphonies of the Planets". The latter has five volumes total. They raised the frequencies of the voyager space craft recordings of the interplanetary magnetic and electric fields to audible range and released the resulting darkish ambient sound scapes. The local universe is quite musical.. Of course there's no music without an observer who interprets it so. In a sense you are right, because there was a specific intention in the minds of NASA engineers to reveal the musical properties of the data. The electromagnetic waves are present all the time, and we as human beings are able to perceive them as music via this little hack. DNA sequence can be used as algorithm for software which creates the sound - there's no sound in DNA unless you transform its inner vibrations to something audible. Electromagnetic waves are 'sounds' themselves however, and resonate within us all the time. The earth's magnetic fields correlate with our brainwaves for example (Schumann resonance), thus providing the very basic rhythms for the human experience...

  8. finnish spectrum on Google Pledging to Bid $4.6bn to Open Spectrum · · Score: 1

Interestingly there was an article today in the largest newspaper of Finland about a recently launched service that uses the 450 mhz ex-NMT network as a wireless broadband (it's been on-line since April). Initial costs for the devices (modem and antenna if needed etc) are a little below 400 euros, and monthly fee is 38 euros at the moment (1-1,5 MB down / 300-600 KB up)... The service should cover the whole country by 2009. The network is being maintained by government owned / private company, which rents capacity to service providers. The company itself can't act as service provider. The connection can be established as far as 50 kilometres from the basestation, which uses Flash-odfm technology. The service competes with Wimax and 3G... There actually is an official objective about being the first country in the world which is totally covered by a wireless broadband..

  10. 1984 on Rewritable Song Lyrics · · Score: 1

The concept is ancient.. this has probably been going on thousands of years. When computers can blurt out out perfect-enough simulated singing the whole process is easily automated. The technology exists, but it's not convincing enough just yet (I'd say it's comparable to the authencity of a computer created fashion model). One of the strongest moments for me in 1984 was when the innocent old lady whose house the main character resided in sung to the tune of an algorithmically created pop-song, thus living fully in the world of multi-layered illusions. The feelings mechanically generated and carefully calculated were enough to make her happy and forget about the world around her, and not to question its motives..

Wasn't the US about freedom to pursue happiness ? When did you people forgot to be nice and supportive to each other in order to reach your ideals ? I can see that the amount of money is the meter of your happiness, not how you use it... I wish you well and hope everything turns out ok for you.

Miami Herald: "No replacement currently is in development and the loss of QuikScat could diminish the accuracy of some hurricane forecasts by up to 16 percent, Proenza and other experts have said."

AP: "An aging weather satellite crucial to accurate predictions on the intensity and path of hurricanes reportedly could fail at any moment, but plans to launch a replacement have been pushed back seven years to 2016. If the satellite faltered, experts estimate that the accuracy of two-day forecasts could suffer by 10 percent and three-day forecasts by 16 percent, which could translate into miles of coastline and the difference between a city being evacuated or not."

"Last year, forecasts were off an average of 111 miles two days in advance, a figure that has been cut in half over the past 15 years. But experts said that could grow 10 percent to 122 miles if the satellite is lost, causing the "cone of error" well known to coastal residents to expand."

i gather that if the satellite is lost the margin of error would expand 11 miles, which doesn't seem that drastic to me.

It's challenging, because the actors could be dead serious, act like they are serious or have multiple identities to express their storytelling talent... it's reasonable to suspect everything, but on the other hand it's also fun to actively be part of the story and the fictional reality.. 24. a state of mind.... on Blame Your Mistakes on Technology · · Score: 1

People generally seek satisfaction and like to be commanded what to do. It's a blessing for the authorities, to which many have a complete trust. Driving a car is mentally demanding, and on the other hand it feels quite natural because the controls mimic the way of using your body. Eventually driving may become one of the automated actions of the body, especially when you drive the same route often enough. Many people don't remember driving a familiar route, but sort of wake up when they arrive. I personally like a lot the meditative state which the driving initiates, and like to listen ambient music while I drive. It feels like you are flying a few feet above the road.
So, it's no wonder people tend to drive wherever a gentle voice or trustworthy indicator tells them to go, because their mind is often in a more suggestible state. This idea led me to ponder, that the frustration people feel when a machine or some outside influence leads them astray is in the end frustration about themselves, the felt inadequacy of the human mind. It's easy to project this frustration to the outside world, even though in the end you would just complicate the situation further, as the perceived world is an image constructed by your own mind, and you are blaming the part of yourself for your actions. Acceptance and forgiveness might help.
With a good map you can navigate to wherever in the world, but many are glad to subject themselves, and have only themselves to blame when they surrender their common sense and observations to a machine, which hardly represents the ultimate pinnacle of reason and invention.
