I fully endorse being skeptical of everything I read, but a reputable media source releases a none too surprised piece of news and you refuse to believe it? And somehow this is modded Insightful?
So all I would need to do is make my internet connection crawl for 24 hours to get a movie I wanted to watch today, great. And what exactly are my parents supposed to do with their 50inch plasma, but 28.8k internet connection?
There will always be physical media because people want to own the movie, not temporarily lease it in one particular file format from one particular distributor.
I was learning complex data structures in C++...Of course today I mainly program in Java and C#
There's the conundrum. If you teach abstract C concepts people complain that you aren't preparing them for the real world where everyone is using managed languages. If you teach them Java, they complain about not knowing how to read compiler errors and create makefiles.
At most 4 year colleges, even a CS major only really has around 6 compsci classes. Thats not enough time to teach the principals of programming AND the nuances of some flavor of IDE. Personally, I'm glad I know C, but I have no interest in ever using it again, I'll stick with Intellisense and visual debuggers.
In my opinion this is worse than the "communities" some e-com sites have you join that secretly charge your card $2 a month, at least that you see on your CC statement. Also, does it put anything visible in your Programs folder or does this program show up in Add/Remove Programs?
Seriously. You're doing consulting work for shit little fringe companies trying to hack away with free dev tools and you say they have cash flow problems...really.
You are completely right about paying clients. I was a consultant at several huge companies that would not pay consulting bills, contest hours, and do just about anything to pay as little as possible. It comes with the territory dude, deal with it.
Check this out: http://www.nyko.com/nyko/products/?i=68 It has a built in battery that tricks the PSP into thinking it is plugged into an AC outlet, allowing you to play on the brightest level. Helps a lot when outside.
Thats a pretty interesting article. Not being a native of the mistake by the lake I didn't really know who Lewis was. The article is pretty old, so I don't know if he is still pissed at Case. The new president is all about cutting costs, despite the fact that the endowment is well over a billion.
This building on campus at Case Western Reserve Univ. was also designed by Gehry. It also has issues with snow/ice (its in Cleveland) building up on the odd angles then falling on people. I walk by it every morning, and if you ask me it's just plain ugly.
Ever heard the phrase "too good to be true." I have not read the reviews on this unit, but I would be surprised if this didn't
A) Seriously suck as a player
B) Break within a year
Good DVD players are still more expensive than this.
Don't hold your breath over the AT&T U-Verse service. I traded in Time Warner HD/RR for the UVerse, and its a decent service but I'm not overly impressed.
They don't actually do "fiber to the home", they do "fiber to the node." So they run fiber to a big box at the end of the street, then the signal just comes the last 1-2K feet to your home over the old copper. I'm no EE, but it has something to do with the signal being such a high frequency it degrades quickly. They run a phone line into a little box and run CAT5 throughout the house from that.
The service is decent, the SD channels look much better, the HD channels are good but not great. They say you can record like 3 shows at once, but fail to mention that it only has 1 HD decoder, so if you are recording an HD show you cant even watch a different HD channel. It runs on Microsoft's IPTV platform so the guide/interface is a little clunky. The internet is nothing great, I'm getting 2-3mb most of the time. It's brand new so I'm hoping it improves over time.
The moral of the story being that fiber doesn't always really mean fiber.
It's more than just identifying the uber programmer. You can't find one on paper or in an interview, the person has to work for you for a year to find them.
At that point, what is the companies incentive to just walk up and give him a 25K raise. If you work for a company that just hands out 33% increases for working hard, let me send you my resume. The only way to get a nice raise is to force their hand.
I've done it twice now and it sounds easier than it really is and you have to have the stones to go through with it. Interview quietly for a few jobs. DONT DONT DONT tell anyone. Made that mistake and it nearly burned me. Take your time and only go after jobs that you would actually take. Get someone to offer a good premium to what you make now. Go back and tell your current company the offer and make them pony up.
Now there is an obvious risk here, if your current job tells you to shove off, well your stuck with a tough choice to stay and have management pissed at you or take the new job. It can be very hard emotionally, high level bosses having meetings titled "Your Name". It can be scary to leave the comfort of your current job. However, it usually pays off, if your group is too stupid/cheap to keep its best people then leaving is ultimately in your best interest.
HDDVD is done. Target just announced they are only supporting BR. Blockbuster only stocking BR in stores was the beginning of the end. I love the $20 price break, wow twenty whole dollars, now I'm going to rush out and get one...
In its earnings statement for the quarter, Microsoft said it shipped 700,000 Xbox 360 units during the period, compared to 1.8 million in the fiscal fourth quarter of 2006 -- a fall off of 61%.
Unfortunately, you have no idea how the system actually works.
Here is what happens. Large outsourcing company scoops up as many visas as they can get. They send Visa holder here to work in your company for several months/years to learn systems/processes/applications. Visa holder then does one of two things.
1. Returns to India and leads a team of programmers, most of whom lack any experience whatsoever.
2. Remains "integrated" with you company, basically acting as a translator between the US company and the group of programmers living and working in India.
So there is no "gain" to the US economy. My/Your job is simply being done by an entire team of people living and working in India who were either unable/unqualified to get a visa.
Parent +1 funny. You are completely right, one tub of lard American weighs as much as a family of Indians.
So in a few years 0.2% of the population can get speeds above 5 Mbs, wow, stop making those BD disks right now.
reputable has a sliding scale...

My PC shipped with Vista, of course the day I got it I put XP on it.
M$ is great at using shipped numbers. We shipped 17 million XBox 360's. Of course 4 million of those have died, but we shipped them dammit.

Actually, they make money on used games. Small shops pay around $57 for a $60 game, I have a friend that owns one.

Your post is much too coherent for this discussion. Please resort to fanboy rants about exclusives and NPD numbers. BTW, I completely agree.

And since when do blog postings with no references/verification count as front page news on /.?
So can you swap out an old HD with a SSD drive nice and easy, or does this require special motherboads?
As good as it can be put, although thats a lot of wishful thinking im afraid.
