The people behind MTV Music's web presence filmed a short video detailing their goals with the site, and outlined how they'll separate the Music videos from other MTV content to help establish a more defined web presence. I found it worthwhile.
If the majority of Slashdot users can read what you wrote (which I agree with, I may add) and consider you insightful, or even worse, accept this as inevitable and necessary, then you have just solidified a very large number of people as hypocrites.
It could only be more sweetly ironic if the next version of Ubuntu shows to be slower than the current one, and then a.1 release fixes all of the problems... Which the MS Fanbois will continue to cite (and make fun of) for years after they're fixed... which will lead to negative public opinion about a perfectly fine operating system.
As an IT professional, I have to say you show a lot of insight into this kind of situation.
I occasionally play video games on the clock--won't lie. But then, so does the rest of the IT department. Gaming is not exactly condoned in our environment, and the boss explicitly states that you do it at your own risk. The difference between our environment and the one you highlight though, is that gaming on the clock has to be treated the same way as casual web browsing. If, during the course of your game, you're needed, you drop what you're doing and take care of it, consequences of the game be damned.
It's the breaking of that rule that can really cause a problem in a way that is definitely hazardous to company productivity. After all, you're not being paid to game, much in the same fashion others aren't being paid to smoke, browse the web, or call their spouse.
On the whole though, overlooking something like that can help increase employee morale... but there are some people and some cases where you cannot.
Of course you don't get any extra daylight. DST just shifts the clock so that daylight is more appropriately confined to "daytime" hours. Hence, daylight is "saved" for "daytime."
Despite the summary actually getting it right, it seems no one here can. It's Daylight Saving Time. The adjustment is made to save daylight for the daytime hours, which has been shown to reduce energy consumption.
I.E. The time standard is saving daylight for you, rather than what "Daylight Savings Time" would imply... stuffing this season's sunlight into a box for use in the summer... or "All natural daylight on sale %20 off!"
In other words, this works for corporations, but not so much for grandmothers.
Exactly. But Windows already has very robust (to my understanding) whitelist capability. It's not as easy to use as a signed application policy could be though.
Anyway, the point is I guess, that if it doesn't work for grandma, then I'd wager to say it doesn't work.
It just may not be possible to lock the personal computer down the same way cell companies do, their damned phones... especially the iPhone. And even if they could... would we really want that?
Why can't these vendors make a product that only allows my "good" programs to execute and nothing else?
You can already whitelist apps in Windows via group policy.
The problem with whitelists (or blacklists for that matter) is that they have to be maintained and updated. The way to ensure a good whitelist is to force programs to be signed much the same way Windows drivers are through the WHQL. The problem with this is that it raises the cost of independent development.
And lets face it, I'd wager that 90% of viruses are acquired through spank/punch the monkey games that, due to them actually being fucking viruses/malware, would never make it through the signature process anyway.
I have to admit, for the most part, it's actually true. Growing up, I had never really seen a person of white/black mix as necessarily black. On the other hand though, those people tend to see themselves as black... rather enforcing the one drop rule all on their own.
In my not so humble opinion, race isn't classified by skin so much as culture... and the racial (or cultural) stereotypes are what play into that more than skin color ever could.
Why drink beer if you're not going to drink what you'd like? That's not to say I don't have a taste for Budweiser when I'm in the mood for a beer, but if you're going to buy beer and cost is a consideration, you're probably doing it to get plastered... in which case, liquor is usually a better choice;)
You shouldn't attack the standpoint from an unrelated angle though. You might be missing the point, because I forgot to mention that the donors from whom any stem cells are created obviously don't care either.
Again, strictly speaking, coma patients are in a coma, and not brain dead, demented folk could quite possibly have life-preserving instinct. I won't argue the unconscious because, frankly, that's just ignorant.
I'm sorry, but genetics dictates that reproduction is a nearly boundless resource. Demented people and coma patients are not, nor is being demented or in a coma a part of living and reproducing.
If you want to argue for the rights of the unborn, stick to the unborn, or at least the reproductive cycle. A chance to lead a life != a life lead.
People with already established lives come first and always have.
If a new network sprung up with the same budget as the History channel and had that name, I'm afraid to think of how many people would take it seriously.
Strictly speaking, unborn children lack the capacity to care whether or not they are born in the same sense that we do.
Further, also strictly speaking, children are extremely easy to make, placing (very mathematically speaking) very little value on whether they live or die.
People can and should hold investment in the welfare of their own children... but for God's sake, once those are secure, as evidenced by pornography, we've got plenty of gametes to spare.
Yep, I just said that a beer didn't taste bad, and then went on to say that all beer tastes bad.
For the majority of commonly available beers, I tend to agree with you. As the troll pointed out, many commonly available beers range from "frosty piss" to "bitter, frosty piss," and as such, only lend credence to your point of view.
I do challenge you, however, to try beers available from local breweries. Beers like Budweiser and PBR are brewed for price and consistency. Independent breweries brew for taste.
If you're in the Great Lakes region, anything available from the Great Lakes Brewery, especially their seasonal brews, can be very good. Nosferatu, out for Halloween, is particularly good.
ingame movie recorder-- only for the WoW Mac client
Shiii.... I thought that was patched in to both platforms... I loaded up WoW on Mac and Windows and noticed the feature on the Mac... figured it'd be on Windows as well.
Didn't return to Azeroth long enough to be disappointed... especially because my Windows machine actually has the hardware capable of doing that.:P
Not sure what logical flaw you broached, but in order to provide a non-fanboi feeding comparison and to help you lay off the Vista bashing, you should have said an OEM, like Compaq or HP, instead of Vista.
To point out your analogy:
Apple Hardware/OSX is to Great Design as Windows Compatibility is to Windows Vista.
but again... is a slightly better touchpad worth $480?
You'd be surprised. I have yet to see a non-apple product that supports two finger scrolling so well. I know you can do it with Linux, but from what I've seen it doesn't work as well on lower quality pads. Also, the touchpad does support automatic shutoff, and it is extremely good at ignoring accidental input.
The real kicker for me is the bluetooth support. Just like Windows, it's buggy as shit, but it's still far and away more reliable than the Windows bluetooth implementations I've used.
It may be because I went so long without owning a laptop that I view them so differently from desktop PC's, but I use it in totally different situations from my Desktops both at home and work. A laptop is a different machine for a different purpose, and it is used in a different manner than a desktop PC. You should never buy a special purpose device based on its general purpose qualifications. In my opinion, and with those facts considered, Apple makes a better product.
I dropped my Macbook Pro once, on carpet, no marks.
My asshole friend, who was of course in a hurry, dropped it on concrete. From about three feet up, with a spin. Heart wrenching awful marks on the back corners, but otherwise perfectly fine.
Self-professed MS fanboi, bought Apple laptop for a reason (just not to drop it).
Mr. McCain, shouldn't you be worrying about your Presidential campaign instead of wasting time on Slashdot?
If McCain wasted his time on Slashdot, I'd vote for him.

Citrix enjoys heavy profits for good reason, I'm certain ;)

If she stood up there in K-mart clothes people would have perceived her as less sophisticated.
And if a $150,000 investment in her mouth could have the same effect, the GOP would be much better off...
Damn that sounded dirty.

Sorry if I wasn't clear.
STOP DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME!
Sigh...

Wait, wait...
Are you saying that every time I get rickrolled could be the first time?
WE NEED THIS NOW.
Yet Obama is designated as "other" by White people.
Ever hear of the One Drop Rule?

Ever seen a "wigger?"
A relatively young language, called TIE, for "Torvalds' Insatiable Ego"
No, no...
It's One Meelion Dollars!
You've got it the wrong way around.
