What I don't get is why, in one picture, the earth in the background shows the Americas and not the USSR. This makes no sense unless the guys in the rocket ship were flipping the bird to the USA.
I'm not sure, I've been wondering about these trends for a while. I have a feeling that to your average consumer the PC is not a necessity and the concept of everyone owning a PC is starting to disappear. People want simple dedicated items. So if we want PVR's then a box with a hard-drive dedicated to recording TV is good, it plugs straight in, software is pre-installed etc. TV's will always be preferred to watching on a computer monitor and the average family doesn't want to waste TV time waiting for the kids to get off the computer. The smartphones have the email in the palm of the hands and if the US follows the rest of the world with texting, that's going to disappear slowly as well for personal use. So what about the people who work from home, well laptops are taking over for work, the laptops for work are normally purchased by the company, so why buy a work computer if the company lets you bring yours home. Even cameras are going directly to printers and eventually the dedicated smart-printer-with-large-LCD dedicated for photos will cover that area. Now take into account that your average Joe has all the computing power he needs right now. At home I have a 4-5 year old Dell 8300. I upped the ram, added a better graphics-card and a bigger gard-drive and it works very very well as a home PC. In fact the debate I have with my friends, is now we're getting older, buying a new PC is harder to justify as the whole gaming incentive is less important.
Funny thing is that I know what router is, I know what a switch is, but wouldn't have a clue what a 1U rack box is (I'm assuming it's something like the blade server thingy's). So I suppose I should have asked you if you could be 2/3rds bothered. Anyhow, the interest for me here is: why would people try to steal anything from a data center? Is there more to it than value of the hardware? As my assumption of a datacenter based on the article was a place where there's a bunch of computers storing information, I had to wonder why would folk break in? Is it some sort of Mission Impossible thing for the actual data or just a bunch of junkies who figure it's an easy score for drug money. As the latter is the less exciting and interesting, I was hoping for the former espionage theory. Not having the exact answer myself, I turned to/. knowing that many people on here would be able to give me an answer. Don't feel bad though, I don't hold anything against you for your impolite elitism, I'll just regard you as one of those lonely, sad and frustrated posters.
So can anyone here be bothered to explain to the ignorant what a datacenter is? I'd never had need to think about this concept until I RTFA. Is it really a place that people rent real estate to put their equipment? Is this to just get it off-site of is it because the price/sqft is cheaper than in the office? Or is it for third-party security, which really makes this bad. In addition, what did they steal and why? Did they steal hardware just to sell as hardware or did they steal this stuff for the data in it...very movie like.
What I don't get here is why didn't they argue significant figures? That way 1073741824 would be equal to 1000000000. Oh and remind me to sue my local bar next time they overpour my bourbon.
I just reused the download link, so I paid $10 (plus credit card processing fee) the first time only. I'm assuming that they are tracking the unique download links to eliminate, or track, the multiple download...well I would. (for those who didn't do this, you sign in to create an account and after "purchasing" the album they send a unique link to the email account given during account creation).
I paid $10 but dowloaded it twice. Once at home and once at work. Seemed to be easier than downloading it and then putting it on a thumb drive taking it to work and uploading it. I must be really stupid.
Ahhh! A newbie Troll. Most Trolls I know wouldn't bring themselves as low as to explain why and how they're Trolling. They would just look down at the respondee with contempt and laugh at the offtopic mod. And, Mr. Newbie Troll, (note here that I have also pissed off the Grammer Naxi's by starting with 'And' without caring or being AC) I have plenty enough karma to modded down many many times, so I have no problem pointing this fun factoid out. So are you so new at this Newbie that you bottom is still red raw from the inaugural Troll spanking rite?
My mom once invested $5 in my lemonade stand. I went bust in 24 hours, mainly due to the fact that I could only be bothered to stand behind it for 1 hour because all my friends were out playing on bikes. I tried to get my kid sister to buy me out for $2, but she had just blown her cash flow on candy, stupid investment if you ask me, no long-term gain, well she'd probably argue about the lack of long-term gain prospects of eating too much candy now.
I can't believe Microsoft did this! What a bunch of evil, coporate money grubbers. M$ will use every trick in the book to make sure they protect their systems and force people into drinking the Kool-Aid. What a bunch of...what? Apple? Oh! Good for Apple protecting their rights and systems. Damn Linux pirates should respect the fact that the iPOD is Apples proprietry knowledge. I can't believe that Linux users thought they could get away with it...
"What kind of manager are you, that you don't understand what your people do I'm the manager that you, as an IT person should want. I'm the person who values the need for a progressive, solid forward moving, secure IT infrastructure with future planning for 1 through 5 year growth. I'm the person who is willing, and able, to listen to what IT needs to get their job done. I'm the person who will champion IT to my direct superior, the CEO. I'm a manager who has no time for groups that consistently underperform and when I've had enough of the bullshit I will fire your ass. I don't expect IT to be a profit center, I expect them to deliver an IT stratergy and move forward in the implementation. As I am not an IT person when an operations group is failing to perform that badly I do need to bring in experts to confirm my fears, you see I don't believe that I know everything about everything, I'm not that concieted. I'm willing to invest in IT and all I ask in return is a professional business approach. Your answer above stinks of entitlement, arrogance and self-importance and rather sad. I hope your IT career in the university system works well for you.
I'm supporting the parent here. The ego's associated to our IT department were astronomic. They actually believed that they can never be fired because they were the only ones who know the 'guts' of our infrastructure. You should have seen them drop a load in their shorts when we had the whole IT infrastructure review by a third party. They pointed out the security risks that hadn't been noticed, the short-falls, the poor implementation (from a business perspective) and more importantly the fact that 25% time was being wasted by IT on IT 'pet' projects that had no sign-off from management. We fired the whole department except for a temp and hired him full-time because he actually worked efficiently and restocked (out-sourcing during the re-hire process). Now we have a more secure system and an IT group who are actually responsive to the IT needs of the company, rather than pretendeding that the IT position was a personal hobby. What a bunch of arrogant, egotistical, slackers we had.
I should have read the article, I just had my computer arrested and sent to jail for conspiring with terrorists.

Sounds more like Joe 90 meets Alias to me

This just in!!! "Australian Army to only be deployed in dry locations"
Could it perhaps be because in the typical product sale cycle demand always drops off?
I thought this was a car analogy

Unfortunately, they need the non-voters to vote to pass the resolution to remove the non-voters
Who said I thought it was the same person? Just refering to a Troll who needed to explain Trolling

At least something brown didn't squirt in his pants

Well then they need bigger spiders, perhaps mechanical ones...with lasers on their heads

For Gods sake! I see no comments about sharks, is this /.?
I wonder if 'Dick On' works the same way 'Flame On' works? He was modded Flamebait afterall...
I've used mail merge twice in my life and I loved it! Unfortunately, in my current job, I haven't had a use for it, although I do keep looking...
I'm in as well, but my phone doesn't have a CD player in it, unless they're very small CD's.
