If now, with.NET, this is the first time that Sun is thinking about adding other language compilers for their bytecode then they are way to late.
Although I wouldn't be supprised if this is Suns' response to the.NET hype, I don't think they will ever be able to top the.NET support already there. If they think this is competing with.NET, it's to little, to late.
More probable: Sun is going to add Ruby on rails to their JSP system, which is probably the only way they kan add anything to anything. They won't get anywhere with thinking they can compete with.NET features.
Hahaha, It's great to see how M$ is taking open source and building a "community" using a highly "secure office space for 4 people"! Somehow I still don't think they know what they are dealing with here.
some 1:1 support in getting Firefox and Thunderbird to run on Vista.
Hahaha, if they need 1:1 support, it's probably harder then just posting a bug report or using IRC.
My 2 cents: Even if you guys never get it to work on Vista, I'll probably never stop enjoying Firefox because I'll probably never start using Vista.
Make sure you get free food without selling your soul and enjoy!
Well, I can't agree with "poker is driving artificial intelligence". This obviously neglects a game which has no chance system, only works with multiple agents, allot of uncertainty and has little or no predictable variables: soccer!
You don't know how the wind will blow, you need to play together, change stratagies (like attack and defend) and ultimately predict the future of an uncertain system without grinding to a hold. Now that's a game that drives AI research.
Hey, if you include Ruby with it's blocks, you need to include Smalltalk to. Yes. Fraud! We still need: Javascript, Ruby, PHP, AWK, Fortran, Perl, Lisp, Prolog, Bash and Smalltalk. (I'm still busy learning the last)
Microsoft Windows products come with an excelent website for support. Their technical team is always there for you and will help you solve all your problems with their product. However, if you still have unsolved problems, please try Windows Live OneCare.
I second that. Further more, for this problem to be solved, we might need a new technology.
How about dropping HTTP and using a protocol which uses a persistent connection through which all data is transmitted. Because the communication can be kept open, it's like running a session for every user: more dynamic pages, less problems with keeping your browser from connecting to other sites (no more phishing even?) Connections could of course be closed if the page doesn't require a session like system and users can always just cut it of.
Not true, when using NAT the server serving the pages get's your internet wide address. What the article is talking about is the local (local network, as in behind a router) address. This can only be found client-side at the moment and apperently Javascript allows you access to this.
As said: the problem is not the XMLHttpRequest that can be done: this is site bound in Firefox. (I think it's domain bound, not site bound actually, but ok)
The problem is the ability of a homepage to be spread over different servers and locations. The only solution I see is getting images to be domain bound to.
This solution will only work if it is set on all possible media that is embedded in the page, allowing only relative links for embedded media. Of course, this would totally destroy most parts of the internet.
What I don't understand is why and how Javascript can get my local IP address: who even needed that to be implemented?
Well, I've taken a look at that (a while back): Dragon seems to be the leader, they get (with a month of traning) te best accurracy.
However, sound recognition engineers are slowly realizing that the problem of recognising words is not just the algorithm's fault. Even people arn't able to understand all words from a taped conversation in a cafeteria.
Dragon is currently the best, getting further will probably require more input, like a webcam to read your lips. This is just another Microsoft product where they read the wikipedia page on it, produced a flashy interface and packaged it with their OS. If you want sound recognition, don't go with Microsoft, they don't have the expertise.
PS: Don't forget, that getting a good or even special microfoon can make all the difference.
This should be part of the default X.org server configuration, I can't see why it shouldn't, so I hope the next time I see this project, I already have it installed;-)
I think this is the future, I would love to play a game where I could do first-person bare-fist fighting by moving two moses up and down over my table!
(Sword and shield would also be cool!)

We create the future!
I think there already is a competitor, called Google Web Accelerator (DNS requests are also placed on that proxy service). If not that, then Google Safe Browsing has a service whith almost the same result. If this works (at all) then they, in a sense, already defeated all competition.
I doubt anybody would like to sponsor it. As everyone is working on getting things cleaner, this seems like a feul gusler.
Nobody should stop dreaming though, they should open a donation page and print names on the wings!
If Google would just become evil, they could win this in a day.
The Google Adsense policy states that:
In order to avoid associations with copyright claims, website publishers may not display Google ads on web pages with MP3, Video, News Groups, and Image Results.
If they want, they could pull all revenue of all these sites in a day, simply by stating they don't comply with the program policies. That would instantly strip all user profits except for the users of Google video program.
Hopefully Google will never become evil with all it's power.
Appart from the fact that it might be replace by High K/Low K (whatever that may be), saying: "could reduce the prices of electronic devices for consumers and, of course, create a positive environmental impact"
Seems wrong: Isn't production only a small part of actual environmental impact? Of course any "greener" pruduction method helps, but when I think about green chips, I think about chips like the efficeon chip from Transmeta.
PayPal has a large number of "Donate" buttons on the web. Is a donation button going to be part of the checkout system? Or has anybody any word on it becoming part of AdWords?
Until this is known, I can't see it could kill PayPal at all.
I've written a program, and immediatly adapted my failure signatures database. My database now contains 3 failure signatures:
- No output
- Non zero return status
- Any output that is not 'Hello world'
If it wasn't the first program I've ever written and I had more time, I probably could get to 200000.
If I would no anything about Windows (and I don't) I'd say they can easily start to beat VMWare using special kernel hooks.
The bottom line is, they can probably make things better the VMWare ever will be able to do. Simply because they can even change parts of the kernel if needed. VMWare won't be able to compete with something like a sort of coWindows system, right? And that is what MS can build and VMWare simply can't. (coWindows as in coLinux)
The only reason I didn't use a definitive are and combined it with a could be was because I didn't find it likely they didn't, but hadn't researched it yet.
However, I just found that the Doom 3 engine is multithreading and therefore any game that uses it. A few other games are highlighted in this article from 2004. Now, 2 years later, I think we can assume most (in store) games contain multithreading at some level.
They/He/She should have used a public key to encrypt it, and keep the other one private. He should also have used a special random code which is rehashed by the author to create a sort of license key. They should make a.NET library to help these guys with propper DRM.
Well, that's how I would have done it (or tried to do it). For that matter: why isn't GPG as mainstream as milk?
I think most of the bots could be/are multithreaded. How about running your own MMORRRRPG (Massive Multiplayer Offline Role Role Role Role Playing Game) where you fill 4 roles at the same time!
You would probably win the game, but hey isn't that what we all want.
But on a more serious matter, appart from graphics, there is still the physics engine, world model, bots, events etc. Most of them could be threaded.

This is no problem at all. It's just like the random numbers in RFID chips, so what's the problem!
:-P

- They are domain squatters and facilitators of it
- They allow large amount of AdSense ads leading to sites to rip you off (selling single page PDF files for $30+)
- It's hard to report copyrighted material on Google Video

Someone should get the patents that apply to the US Patent and Trademark Office site and database system and sue them!
