Can the senders please make sure that if those guys are predators, the rest of us are safe. Thanks.
As a side note, I tend to feel strangely unsure that such things are a good idea when unknown extraterrestrials receive more attention than starving 3rd world fellow terrestrials.
Well I don't. The kleptocracy that can invade everyone's privacy at will can easily sway statistics as well.
Eisenhower's nightmare has come true. The monster that was created against the foes of both World Wars has turned against the society that created it. It's become the reason for its own existence.
"I've moved my stuff off Google,Hotmail and Yahoo.... ...use multiple prepay phones ...Watch what you say online"
It looks like NSA has already backed you into a corner. Doesn't your story prove that they have too much unwarranted power and should be dealt with, instead of everyone just quietly letting them get away with such atrocious invasion of privacy?
The GMO producing companies are the most evil entities in the world.
They keep suing farmers when the wind blows their cr@p on other people's land. The fertilizers that keep their seeds going are a natural disaster for the soil, for the animals and all other crops in the vicinity. They forced a law in the US that doesn't even *allow* people to find out whether the product they buy is GM or not. They bait new customers with low prices, then when those farmers can no longer switch back to natural seeds, they ruin them. They expressly want natural seeds to die out so the whole world has to buy from them: they are sworn enemies of natural seeds because farmers can save those.
I trust natural selection. I don't trust greedy corporations that don't care about anyone or anything else. If you want the truth about them, read the stories of farmers who battled their army of lawyers for years. Percy Schmeiser's moving story at http://www.percyschmeiser.com/ is a good start.
> you will find precisely zero cases where this happened. If you want to prove me wrong, then cite one case where a farmer was sued for unintentional infringement.
"Percy Schmeiser is a farmer from Bruno, Saskatchewan Canada whose Canola fields were contaminated with Monsanto's Round-Up Ready Canola." Then Monsanto sued him.
I cannot think of a more evil and greedy corporation than Monsanto and the likes. I thank God I live in a part of Europe where no GM crops are allowed.
Some of the above comments are really funny, but this is actually quite serious. Monsanto is one of the most evil corporates ever. They force their genetically modified crap upon (bio)farmers. When their seeds then infect other crops, their lawyers appear and claim intellectual property rights, suing farmers left and right.
They promise better crops / results from GM origins, but the crops are actually worse over the years, they can't be sold in as many markets (because of GM bans), they require much more chemicals, superweeds take hold, and cancer increases.
I pray that genetically modified seeds (or animals, as the article says) never come to Europe. Ever.
...how come it's better to try to remove CO2 after it's spread out in the atmosphere, in a roughly 0.0004 dilution, than at the source of CO2, like chimneys and factories and exhausts?
"...one can easily "translate" the text if one already knows what they want it translated too...."
Is that what you think of linguists? Surely they can compare modern translations to their ancient origins better than that.
Regarding the amputees -- I don't claim to know the answer, but God is sovereign and according to Jesus, he is leaving much of what he has for us to the next era. And while believing this takes faith, based on Jesus' character and actions, that is faith well founded.
It's easy to verify this. I ask you to point out a SINGLE relevant deviation between that text and today's popular Bible translations, when this book comes online.
(If it didn't happen with a much older script, the Dead Sea Scrolls, I don't expect surprises here either. See http://www.allaboutarchaeology.org/dead-sea-scrolls-2.htm, last paragraph.)
Please use the Reply button when you found a significant difference between the old text and the new translations. Thanks.
"They shouldn't spend *any* money on education until all poverty is solved"
Not so fast, let's see how this works out first, OK?
Education is the greatest basis for fighting poverty in a 3rd world country. Think better educated people -> more efficient entrepreneurs / companies -> more money in the local economy -> more taxes -> better healthcare and services etc. Uruguay could possibly have just made the first step to become the next India (IT-wise)!
BUT the greatest thing is that with more literate & educated people, the less likely they will endure another dictator. And that should happen *everywhere* else, not just in Uruguay!
Without education, you could wait forever for all poverty to be solved.
Isn't the idea that instead of constantly giving them fish, we *teach* them to fish?
Tell me something guys. Typical usage leaves the screen unchanged for 98% of the time. How come the video card driver can't figure out when there is no change on the screen and give the battery-eating video card a power-saving rest?
I say it's the drivers' fault. If my estimation -- 98% -- was correct, then Vista *should* be able to get within 98% of XP's power consumption, even with Aero.
(I remember before Vista came out, I thought to myself, "they *MUST* be smarter than letting Vista eat the battery like a 3D-app or a game, even when barely anything changes on the screen." Apparently not...)
First of all, you have to define what base 0 means.
I've always imagined base '0' would mean that you write the necessary number of 0 digits.
The first 4 non-negative integer numbers would then be "", "0", "00", "000" etc., you get it.
And the ideal programming language to handle base-0 numbers is Whitespace:)
Putin, if being an autocrat...
Putin's tactics may be somewhat questionable...
Putin may be the BEST dictator ever, but by introducing (rather, continuing) the leadership style that he does, he's gonna make it MUCH worse for your* country when another political leader comes to the scene.
The browser and the HTML language were not designed to be an application interface; they were made to just display information. So writing apps in a browser will NEVER be as flexible or straightforward as standard GUI programming.
It's all about the ubiquity of the browser -- i.e. it's already installed, the whole easy adoption jazz -- so most new apps get written for it. But anyone who had to debug Javascript, or trick the user interface NOT to accept multiple button pushes, or fiddle with browser implementation quirks & incompatibilities etc. KNOWS that we are worse off with this than desktop apps.
IMHO, about the only thing that validates the use of web apps is the easy creation of UIs that mostly contain text and images. Once we get to controls and business logic, HTML and Javascript are a PITA. And still, most of us are stuck with them...:(
Phones can go haywire in 1000s of ways. There is no way to test what interference they will cause when they go wrong on a plane. You can't possibly test all the scenarios...
Of course the same thing may happen on the ground, but they're less likely to cause a catastrophe here.
"You propably have to compare the average wannabe (middle class) progamer to the average (middle class) developer and the star progamer to the star developers/studio owners. Who earns more now? Excuse me? Bill Gates -- a top programmer? Which planet are you from? If he is so good, why does 50% of whose business is computers (virus makers, virus buster makers, spyware and -buster makers, botnet kiddies, firewall programmers etc.) live off EXPLOITING or FIXING his idiot pet product called windows? Imagine all these people doing something USEFUL instead...
Oh, I get it! It was a JOKE! Hilarious:-) Mod the guy +10 Funny.
Oh yes, one more thing. Nobody kills your dream. It's just that it's a sequential thing: FIRST prove yourself on your home ground, and THEN venture another one. Nobody said dreams themselves were wrong, it's just that they are _conditional_ =)
altruism... the killer of dreams.
Perhaps "they" are merely waiting for us to outgrow our clinging to this primitive tribalism
Hmmm. That makes no sense to me.
If I was an ET (if such a thing even exists in the first place), I would DEFINITELY wanna make sure that earthlings keep their house tidy, before eyeballing mine...
OK lets suppose there is a large tribe in the jungle. They are fighting among themselves, and destroying their country, even neighboring countries as the civil war progresses. At one point they realize they are VERY motivated to learn more about YOUR country.
I'm not sure I understand.
We, the "intelligent" inhabitants of our planet, are destroying our habitat, and killing each other in wars.
If, for example, we don't respect HUMAN life in the 3rd world (just 1000s of miles away) enough to help them to a long-term resolution, then what would we do to NON-HUMAN life?!?
I'm not only _expecting_ all SETI efforts to fail, I'm also _hoping_ they fail.
Very true.
Things that don't work on the small scale, will never work on a large scale. Can't make your family happy? Don't try to be a leader of your country (i.e. politician). Don't care about keeping your world in shape? Then stop dreaming about exploring other worlds.
Can the senders please make sure that if those guys are predators, the rest of us are safe. Thanks.
