  1. Re:Using this technique on Test-Tube Burgers Coming Soon · · Score: 2, Insightful

I don't know why but this concept gives me the creeps because we don't really understand all there is to know about genetics. By creating meat in a lab, there is no way to be sure that it is exactly the same as nature intended it to be. In fact, our bodies may very well process it differently or it could be very detrimental to our health. It is better to use actual animals but figure out a way to make it more environmentally sound. For example, by harvesting the methane gas produced by cows, we are left with a rather abundant energy source. I am usually always skeptical of "simple" solutions because humanity is always looking for the magic pill for panacea and it just never happens. It is possible to be smart and economical about cattle farming while treating these animals humanely.

  4. Disagree on HP CEO Says Google-Motorola Deal Could Close-Source Android · · Score: 1

I think the HP CEO has leapt to a conclusion without really thinking through the scenario. The short answer is, no, this will not cause the Android platform to become a walled garden. It made perfect financial sense for Google to aquire Motorola Mobility because it gives Google absolute and complete control over a hardware set with which to continue to develop Android. The advantages are numerous as Google can really create a first class operating system with direct access to the hardware layer. By developing the hardware and software in tandem (yet keeping the operating system open source) the product will simply improve by leaps and bounds while giving third party developers even more power. Google is mostly an open source company and operates as such anyhow.

If they're selling more smart phones than they ever have... and they're overselling their resources, which they seem to know they're doing... why not just upgrade the network?

It isn't as simple to just upgrade the network. They have only a finite amount of frequency spectrum to squeeze a large number of data hungry devices so it will not necessarily help to just add more towers. Of course, if AT&T is sitting on unused spectrum, they should be upgrading the network.

  8. Heartland Institute on Leaked Heartland Institute Documents Reveal Opposition To Science · · Score: 1

Maybe climate change is happening, maybe it isn't. I don't think anyone really knows for certain. However, this is NOT an excuse to continue to burn fossil fuels and polluting our environment. Ultimately, fossil fuels are unsustainable as long term energy solutions. We need to look at hydrogren, solar, wind, and maybe even nuclear. Heartland Institute sounds suspiciously like a lobby group for the "clean" coal and oil industries, nothing more and nothing less. They have a vested interest in supporting their respective industries. This brings me to another point, "clean" coal, is bullshit! It is still a carbon based product being burned and since when does coal burn cleanly. Usually, burining coal results in a dark smoke that cannot possibly be good for the environment.

Emotional pain can create real, actual physical ailments and this is why there is great emphasis in studying depression in humans. Current thinking that depression causes undue cardiovascular stress and can possibly accelerate alzheimers and have other deleterious effects on the brain. Depression can cause pain. This study is exciting because it just might cure depression versus just using medicines to mitigate it.

That is an extremely thin veil. The politicans really want to ultimately be able to control dissent. I grow weary of this crap but human ingenuity finds a way around little problems like these. I am waiting for the time when communities come together to build community-owned, decentralized networks nullifying the point of creating such laws as these. If the internet were really owned by the people, a surveillance law would be practically impossible to enforce. It just shows that government is afraid of the people and it should be. People should not fear their government.

This rewards someone that is sly, not a good programmer.

It is a shame to see Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, and Sprint still trying to squeeze money out of antiquated technologies. Another competitor to the entrenched Big Telecom companies was sorely needed. This will force the legacy carriers to up their ante or try to fight a losing game in the court systems to block Google. Google is one of the wealthiest companies out there and it is not inconcievable that it would be more costly to fight in court then simply to fight on the open market by bringing 1GB FTTH at the same cost but in 1/3 of the time.

For one, it is a gross invasion of privacy. For another, it is a huge and needless expense on the ISP. The ISP is burdened with extra server and storage needs as a result of such politician shortsightedness. Think of the expense that it places on small businesses like coffee shops and smaller motels that provide wireless access as a courtesy. Now, they have to purchase servers for data archival. Additionally, this is a burden on tax payers because it will be expensive to enforce. Your politcians should be working to improve lives, not increase the reach of the state. Last time I checked, the economy was poor. Tell your representatives to work on fixing the economy, not trying to make things safer through the enactment of senseless laws.
