Umm, you do know with sub prime mortgages, it's about the rich people/companies GIVING out their money to keep a lean on an asset (ex: a home) and with the housing market vastly undervalued, the value of the asset is less than the cash given to the previous owner.

I'm not pro bail-out, this the matter is way more complicated than simply "giving money to rich people".

  8. Amazon reviews brought a tear to my eye on Will DRM Exterminate Spore? · · Score: 3, Insightful

It both surprised and made me proud of my fellow consumers that so many people do care about the unacceptable DRM being used in this game.

EA marketing can spin it all they want, but they will kill their DRM servers the moment:
    1. The game no longer makes money
    2. The server gets a non compatible "upgrade"
    3. EA gets bought out by another company
    4. EA smartens up and realizes DRM was just a bad idea that only punishes the legal users (and if this happens too late, nobody will be create an EA patch to the game)

What if I wanted to still play Spore in 2026, that's not as unrealistic as it sounds because as you read this I'm playing many 15yr old PC games still. There are many DOS games I still enjoy (legally) to this day in DOSBOX.

What EA needs to realize is pirates aren't their demographics, some people will just steal the game, protection won't change them either way. Meanwhile, intelligent consumers like myself, who actually had an interest in the game, will not either boycott or get the game using more nefarious means. Mind you I am an active consumer, I've purchase two new PC games in the last 6 weeks.

Finally keep in mind there's another reason behind this kind of DRM: to prevent the sale of used copies, Half Life 2 did the same thing when they tied the game to Steam. I'll bet the shirt on my back if you were to call EA and say you bought the game used and want a 4th authorization, they'll turn you down. It's both a moral and a technological abuse.

Just say no to rent-ware masquerading as a product!

So they've basically removed tabs, and simply map separate IEs into one UI and they all pretend to be tabs.

If that's all they're going to do, there is far too much waste to make this a good idea. Think of the unwashed masses who bought their OEM PC with 256mb or 512mb of RAM, IE7 is already a beast to them, I can't imagine how they're going to surf the net.

I can already see the flood of people saying how IE8 slowed down their computer, and sadly, it's true.

  15. Re:It's also _BETA_ on IE8 Beta 2 Fatter Than Firefox and XP · · Score: 2, Interesting

Having a separate thread for each tab would be a good feature in any browser, especially when you're developing a webpage and during the dev cycle a loop goes awry or your output is all gunked up. And with Intel's upcoming cpu being 4 core only with hyper-threading, giving you 8 real threads, this form of multi-threading could give an interesting boost as long as the overhead doesn't kill you.

I will admit that it's suspicious that IE8 is performing this poorly by beta 2 but I'm still willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and hope for some great optimizations by the time we hit RC.

But to be honest, separate threads per tab isn't important enough to make me want to switch away from Firefox. Perhaps Microsoft hasn't learned the biggest appeal to Firefox are the great Add-Ons, something MS hasn't fully implemented yet, and probably won't out of FUD and/or "not invented here" syndrome.

Not that silly HR morale tricks are any better, but they're cheaper, and that saves the bottom line, which is actually a good thing. You do want them to be able to still have money to pay you next week, right?

Usually the real solution would take an understanding that they don't have. Often the people who would need to approve of changes, or the ones who need to be changed (see: canned). Nobody is going to sign their own pink slip, generally trouble makes have no idea they are the trouble, they just see you as the problem.
