Yes! Vegas is a genius album by the Crystal Method. The low end on the first track gave me one of the best audio experiences I've ever had at my studio. It was the first time I heard the low end on a set of speakers that sounded right. I paid over a thousand for my speakers alone, not counting converters and cabling, etc but it took the extreme stress of paying so much for equipment well well worth it.
Well people know that a great sound card is overkill on cheap speakers or even a moderately priced speaker system. I do audio engineering and rely on high end equipment for my pro work and find that on board motherboard sound has improved much in the last 5 years and is good enough for many users. Ask a user what's more important, a new video card or a new sound card and they will choose video 9 out of 10 for gaming.
General purpose, and that's their strength. How hard is it for a user to hook it up to a TV or put a wireless controller on it. Not that hard at all. It takes longer to boot but that's a price I would pay to for versatility. I really don't have the money to have two new separate computers in my household. Some people do, most people don't. Consoles exist only for the controlling interest of the corporations who built them and I agree to curb piracy. It's to bad we loose the incredible power of a PC because of this lock in. Size is an issue you might say. If you've seen the small form factor PC's these days that is not an issue at all. Having a standard is an issue? Well have a gaming spec motherboard minimum and have manufacturers build to it and update it every year so those who want to and don't know what to buy will get it.
No offense but why would they want to do what will become the free network of the people. Sooner or later a p2p public operated wireless network will be the only way to get big brother resistant network. Instead of relying on corporations we should be relying on ourselves and sharing a portion of our wireless bandwidth for the public network. I wonder if there is a way to segment a portion of a wireless network securely for public use and still have our machines for private use. I think that would be a great feature to implement in hardware maybe.
Very scary how much power they have. I think the FCC goes out of their way to help them out way to much. Also there is an unspoken rule on the hill that if you bring the money to economy (free the money from citizens pockets) and thus generate revenue for the government you have almost free reign on what you can do. It's looked at from a global perspective now where we as a country compete with other countries. I believe that this is way to short term solution for keeping the US powerful. If the airwaves are opened to to the public in general I think this will spur an incredible amount of innovation through the sharing of information. A knowledgeable populace and free flowing of ideas is the most powerful tool we can have as citizens.
Solid post. I find it odd that people still don't understand Microsoft's true motives for it's entire business model. It's there interest first and then the consumer. It always had been and always will be, until they fade from relevance. (Give it 20 years)

LOL. So funny. I'm sure someone will say it's vapor ware and that Google will go out of business soon or the hardware will never arrive leaving us holding the bag. Google has done a great job delivering the SDK and giving developers a chance to get into active development. I love to bet the naysayers some big money that Google will deliver, but their all talk and will not do it... as usual. I for one have started to work with the SDK. I may not develop anything worthwhile but know that if I do it will have a future.
"If you think you need to be hardcore to play SFIII, you don't play a lot of fighting games..." Are you kidding me! My last memory of playing that game was a line of noobs getting owned by Oro. I stopped because the best players were hard core and seemed to live at the arcades. It wasn't worth it anymore and the fun had been lost.
Making it relevant. That pretty much sums it up. Many of the students I knew asked why are they taking the higher level math. The teacher would in turn have no relevant answer other then "This will get you into college." That answer was a great disservice to students. Some of us don't automatically know the answer to the question, but still need the answer. If the teacher would have said, hey this will help you make video games I personally would have put more effort into the problems.
Yes. I have a similar story. Had a high school student in my college class who did everything perfectly, tested perfectly. I found out he lived a sheltered life away from any of the burdens of the real world, so he didn't have to duck any vicious right crosses from the 100 school gangstas that had populated my high school. I didn't score close to him but I felt like the king of the world when I made it through that class! Either way I found the tools of logic in math helped me with problem solving in all the areas of my life from then on. Math is a essential tool that sadly falls by the wayside for a large chunk of the population.
So funny. I know a Wii fan who nearly burst a blood vessel every time some mentions what they like about the PS3. He nearly punched out a poor customer who contradicted him at the store he works at. His friends are all the same way or close to it. You would think Sony personally tried to kill them or their families. These days I just try to avoid him and his fanboi posse. No they don't have girlfriends but I'm to sure that would help them anyways. I'm all for pointing out respectfully the pros and cons of each system but why does someone have to make it a issue of extreme argument or violence. Anyone else have this kind of exp?
Same here. I would pay some money to Google so they could compete for the bandwidth. I'm just tired of feeling like we the people are on the losing end way to much these days.
Good luck on your new venture Mr. Lessig. I appreciate your hard work and know you'll cause change for good especially with your ability to find critical insight in what you do.
Man I thought I was the last one to let that weak card go. I do remember liking the image quality a great deal at the time though but not enough to compensate for 7-15fps in Doom 3. Please people upgrade your video cards!!
Yes it's "reached" that many but I seriously doubt if a chunk of that is active users. I would really like to see data about active steam clients say within the last 6 months and then get back to me. I used it once and only once and never again as I like to physically own what I own and not lease it.
I don't think maturity is even a question here. Microsoft has demonstrated practices as a corporation that morally I can't justify. Maybe you have no morals, some or morals or whatever and this is just Microsoft doing business it's way, but as a "community" I can't stand back and say congratulations even on my most generous days.
"Morality.. filters both ways."
Hey Steve. Coolness. Can you talk about your time at IBM. Computer history has always fascinated me. You must have some great stories about the personalities, tech and engineering that went on during that time period.
Ahh. Power supplies are another story aren't they. There are articles all over the net that can guide you. I usually look at amps on the 12V lines and power supply weight. (Heavier usually being better) These are the fundamental factors to start with. I deal with naval ship power on hundreds of PC systems without UPS. Every time I have a system acting up, losing data, rebooting randomly I check the power supply. I actually take it out of the system, open it up and look at it. 9/10 times I see bulging caps or leaking caps or on occasion exploded capacitors. I noticed that the systems with more expensive power supplies lasted about three times longer. A hard lesson learned but now I know how important they can be for reliable computer operation.
Well said. As an arcade fan I could very well notice the difference on some arcade games such as Virtua Fighter 2 which runs just under 60 FPS compared to games like Tekken 2 while not choppy were not as smooth. Studies done with airforce pilots show that some could recognize aircraft shown once in every 220 fps.

Amen to that. It's makes my browsing exp much more enjoyable. Highly recommend it.

Still broke. I just saw the laser pointer cat patent the other day. Very sad state of affairs.

And then I heard the sound of a million fanbois crying out in pain. I almost bought a 360. Thank God I didn't.

Everyone makes mistakes. Does that make them much less worthy of some help.
This kind of scary angry post gets modded interesting. Man I could feel this guy's issues trying to burst through my Flatpanel! ;-)

I am the next guy and I hate windows more then you.
