You really only need the JDK. I'd get "JDK 6 Update 7 with Java EE" at http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp and also the javadoc distribution. Start with that and a good IDE like Netbeans or Eclipse. I'd actually recommend Netbeans although I use Eclipse myself; Netbeans should be easier to get started with and seems to be a little less quirky.
Some of Sun's tutorials have code that are already Netbeans projects. Go through basics first like understanding the langauge (e.g. differences/similarities w/ languages you know) before worrying about stuff like Swing (UI), or anything J2EE-related- you'll get there eventually.
Cable companies charge an average $7.50 monthly lease fee for the box that costs them $300 upfront, plus maintenance and repair. In "only" 40 months of maintenance free operation of that box, the cable company breaks even. Yeah...that's certainly not what I would call milking the customer.
Maintenance and repair??? What the hell is that? I never need anything of mine repaired, and if I did I'd just buy a new one. I'd much rather pay $300 for the box and never pay any monthly fees than pay $10 a month for renting one (assuming it won't go obsolete within 3 years, which it shouldn't). That's why I bought a Tivo 2 years ago and got a product lifetime (after giving up on waiting for them to come out with a 2 tuner model; I doubt I'll get one now that I have to pay $$$ for the box AND a monthly fee just for the program guide (yeah and firmware updates and other crap I could care less about so long as the box works as expected)).
You make good points but there's one major flaw with them. The more urban of an area you live in, the more difficult it will be to see anything to get you excited about astronomy. In an urban setting, binos or a telescope are a must to see really cool stuff up in the sky.
I'll second that, Stelarium is awesome.
For entry-level astronomy, if you don't already have some, I'd recommend a good (or decent depending on your expertise) pair of binoculars. I recently got lightly into backyard astronomy and after reading lots of material on the web decided to go with a basic, cheap (but decent) pair of binoculars to start with: Celestron SkyMaster 15x70 (~$70 on Amazon). A good pair of binos are always handy anyway for scouting the sky, just be sure to read the articles about what to look for when buying a pair of binos for astronomy (e.g. the size of the objective, 70 mm for mine, and FOV are probably most important for astronomy).
Yeah, because there are just a million things you need to use spreadsheets for in high school (or college for that matter). I can't recall using very many (if any) during my school years... I certainly didn't have to do anything that would have required MS Excel that any other spreadsheet program couldn't have done just as easily.
They must not have seen the Star Trek TNG episode "Ship In A Bottle" (or the movie, Nemesis was it? w/ the exact same concept). Both still highly (well for the most part) enjoyable to watch though...
I was disappointed also since there weren't really any new games announced for either Wii or DS. I'm still waiting for them to announce Pilotwiings, maybe they're waiting until the Wii game lineup gets in another lull (not counting this summer; yeah, I'm still waiting for Metroid, then Mario and Smash; Paper Mario is the only game I got this year I think)?
I turn it on once a week or so, usually just to check out the polls and the news. I occasionally play Wii Sports or Excite Truck or Monkey Ball, but I'm waiting for Metroid and Super Mario Galaxy to come out. Oh well, gives me more time to finish up Kingdom Hearts II:) Where's the DS Download Station channel???
yeah, including apps like Google Desktop. I have Desktop Sidebar installed so whenever my pc is on I have images from the Weather Channel on my desktop so would they consider that 24/7 usage, or will they only consider web site views through a web browser? Eh, it's not like it'll really matter anyway, it's just another metric to use in their bag.
Yup, sell it for maybe $400 and pack in FFXII and maybe I'll consider buying... Only reason I got the PSX in the first place was FFVII (but got to enjoy Castlevania SOTN, FF:Tactics and a few others); eventually got a PS2 primarily for SquareEnix games also. I'm wishing Sony would go away and SquareEnix would move any PS3 exclusives to the XBox 360 instead.
I could care less about Comcast's Uber Super Dooper Faster Than Your Turtle DSL Power Boost Speed. Most usage of the internet can't even take advantage of the speeds they supposedly offer. All I know is that if they offered a slower speed for less $$$ I'd switch in a heartbeat. Although for the moment I'm just thanking God that they've never increased their internet prices (bastards just raised cable by $3 again).
Um, I think the whole point was that "why are many people still limiting their code to 80 columns?" Of course nearly every tool in use today supports customizing it, so the question is why don't we change that number in practice? It can be really annoying looking at code that's limited to 80 columns. For example, a coworker worked on some code that I'd done but their default eclipse preferences cause every file they touched to be wrapped at 80 columns (e.g. lines were now broken up) and it looked horrible now.
That's great for cell phone users (everyone but me), but if you want more than broadcast TV you're only choice is to be screwed by Comcast (unless you want a dish, then you have a whopping TWO more choices to get screwed by...) I just want to be able to watch AND record HDTV (the whopping 6 or so channels that they have where I live) without having to give up my firstborn...
Like new channels or games I care about? I think the only thing coming out this year that I care about is Mario, Metroid, and Smash Bros (they are still coming out this year right?) Seems to me that they are losing momentum, at least with gamers that have been with Nintendo forever like me.
is his house was burgled, along with his car and identity stolen. What bothers me is when people assume virtual worth == real world worth. If a non-physical material is being sold for $2 and 10 are obtained illegally, that doesn't necessarily mean that $20 worth of stuff was stolen. Who says that if they weren't stolen that the company would have made the $20 in the first place? The worst crimes are the ones that affect peoples lives. Average Joe's are the ones having their possessions and identities stolen, while only corporate big wigs are really being affected by piracy (darn, can't get that $1 million raise I wanted to give myself this year, better layoff 30% of the company so I can still get me raise).
It's even more disturbing that, seeing that we have to ban stupid things like this, that it wasn't already banned EVERYWHERE. Of course, banning something usually doesn't mean jack in reality which is the bigger problem...
I'll second and raise you. How about bringing it to the VC (with wiimote support of course) along with working copies of the couple of ScummVM games that are both freely and legally available from the publishers. I can always dream...
If desktop development is dead, then I must have used my mind to submit this post directly to the/. server. That's the only explanation I can come up with...
Hmm, thought maybe the origin of the article might have been April Fools day but didn't see that (only backtracked the article a few levels though).
FTA: "to transport or store digital documents and projects"
How about a cheap USB flash drive instead? It would likely be much easier to use than an iPod for transferring documents. Not sure what kids need to transfer so much stuff for though... When I was in college, I did my CS work remotely and just transfered the work via FTP or something between their system and mine.
FTA: ", or to listen to lectures"
Yeah, maybe for college w/ large auditoriums or if you miss lectures. For grade/high school, how about just going to class and actually listening for a change? you know, what you're supposed to be at school for
Oh yeah, plus if they used iPods, what about all of the kids that don't even have computers at home? They'd probably just sell their iPod for money anyway...
More importantly, why is the Weather info often 5 hours or more old? I think they should find a better provider... Also very annoying, is that even with WiiConnect 24 on, there have been a few times when I access the weather or news channels and it says it needs to update. Um, if it's supposed to be on all the time, won't it always have the latest info assuming I don't have internet connection issues? Plus, why is the Wii Shop channel dirt slow? It's really annoying. Oh well.

Of course that only works with the classic 3x3 cube. If you try it on the 4x4 or 5x5 cubes, they'll self destruct.

Yes, but can it filter dupes?

I think that was my favorite game in elementary school (as far as educational games go).

I just wait until music I like comes out to buy a CD. This happens around once a year these days...
