Think of an Apple console! I'm sure it'd look slick, but if they really put some though and innovation into it, it'd be great to see them entry in the next generation of consoles. I think the next generation of consoles will have for "PC" or "Media Center" functionality than those out now. Apple already has a grip on the way a lot of us listen to our music, it would be really nice to see what they could do with a gaming console / media center. Competition is good for the consumer.

  8. It's about the games... on Microsoft To Drop HD DVD · · Score: 4, Interesting

Having been a console and pc gamer all my life (28 years) I have seen all the consoles come and go over the years. What it's really about is sitting down, chilling and gaming. Whether that is with your family, your best friend, or by yourself... it has to be fun. We'll see how the PS Home thing works out, but for now the 360 is king when it comes to playing while at home by yourself, because you aren't "by yourself", the whole world is waiting to play you. Hardware is only a tool. If you buy a game console for the optical drive then you are buying the product for a reason secondary to gaming.

Being a former Wii owner and current 360 owner I can impart this into the conversation: My mom and dad got me a Wii because they remembered when they bought me a NES back in 1986 with zelda and excitebike. So they did a 20 years later kinda thing and it was great. I played through Zelda :TP and it was great, Ocarina of Time great. But I ended up hocking it on eBay this last Thanksgiving for $400 and bought a 360. Why? because the games just weren't what I was after. I hate to say it because Nintendo go this wrap back when the Genesis came out, but the games seem kiddish, plus it's nice to just kick back and play instead of standing and flailing about.

The 360 and PS3 are a little premature in the "HD Generation" of gaming. HDTV's are just now becoming affordable at 1080p. I would hate to be someone who bought a 720p native resolution TV, but it's not that big a deal when it comes to watching TV, GAMING however is a whole different story. 1920x1080 is a beefy resolution for even the latest PC's to to handle at a playable framerate. PC gamers have been playing in HD for years now, ever since games were playable in 1024x768 on their monitors. But HD is the buzzword for the new tv market, and they have to give it name. I guess HD sounds cooler than HR (High Resolution).

I for one look forward to the NEXT generation of consoles. 1080p Big HDTV's will be even more affordable, The format war is over, and consoles will have to huddle up with a company to come up with some really impressive hardware to ensure their console has a 4-5 year minimum lifespan. In that respect, Sony has delivered on with it's last two consoles with DVD, and now with the Cell and Blu-Ray. I am a fanboy of neither Microsoft or Sony, I am a gamer and I just want a way to play good games at a reasonable price. My opinion on this generation at this time, Microsoft wins.

I for one look forward to the next generation of consoles. I've been a gamer ever since I was 7 years old, and now at 28 I am getting that little kid feeling all over again. I played Wii Sports after Thanksgiving Dinner with my 7 year old cousin, 45 y/o Aunt, and my Grandpa. A little toasted, and well... high, I took a moment to reflect while relaxed in the chase lounge waiting my turn to "bowl". I saw a really good time being had by 4 generations of family (myself included). As a gamer, it was a beautiful moment because what was once "my thing", referring to gaming, was being heavily enjoyed by people who I would convince to play Call of Duty 4 with me. I think we've finally reached a point of acceptance in gaming as another entertainment form thanks to the innovation of Nintendo. That being said, look at Microsoft *ducks*. Xbox Live on the 360 is simply the best gaming I've ever had in my life. Now that my friends are scattered across the country, XBL allows us to play together, and message/video conference very easily. I realize this has been available on PC forever, I've been doing it... but to be able to chill out in front of the fireplace on the couch instead of a office chair that I'm in 8 hours a day at work too is awesome. To get to my point, the 360 despite it's hardware flaws is innovative in a whole other direction, some might call "hardcore gaming". The future will just get better. Imagine the posibilities of taking Wii interface innovation and combining it with an Xbox live experience.

Thanks for your insight. As I said before I am no expert, just a geek that daydreams of this kinda stuff. But I think it's really cool that an idea I had about black holes after watching a show on the History Channel, has been thought of by researchers too. Thanks for your links and comments, I found them very interesting and made for a good morning read during a slow day here at work (Friday before Christmas). I found the wiki article on Fecund Universes to be exactly what I was looking for. Here is an excerpt:

Black holes may generate new universes Modern scientific theory, however, does provide a mechanism by which universes can be formed. The original theory of general relativity predicted that when a black hole was formed it collapsed into a singularity. That is, space and time would become so curved here that everything would collapse into a point. General relativity also predicted that our universe sprang from a singularity during the big bang. But we now know that general relativity breaks down below the Planck length. It is here that quantum mechanics begins to play a part. For this reason, physicists have suspected for a long time that a singularity would violate the uncertainty principle, and hence cannot exist. Recently, this conjecture has been investigated mathematically. This is still speculative, but according to one theory of quantum gravity a singularity is not formed. Instead, space and time do not collapse to a point but rather into a (four-dimensional) tube which opens into an entirely new region of space and time. The singularity "bounces" back out into a big bang. This means it is entirely possible that our own universe was produced when a black hole was formed in another universe.
