I really don't think both formats are DOA, maybe some people like only streaming or downloads (those are propably also the people who don't buy movies but illegally download them)..
But as an owner of many original dvd's and vhs-tapes I for one want my movies that I paid for on a physical carrier (disk), because what happens when your disk is full or when you HD crashes, then you can pay for the movies again..
A lot of people like to have a physical thing to put on a shelve, just like books...
Maybe in the states or something, but here in europe, the PSP outsells the DS.. and looking at the bugger you don't even have to wonder why.. the DS is so ugly and old looking..
Well there is a big difference between Sega and sony's machines. Sega didn't have anything to play movies, and sony now has a very cheap HD movie player which can also play games, and I know a lot of people who always wanted a PS2 and now also have HD gear but no players, and now they (and me) say, heck for 499 why not buy the PS3 so I can finally enjoy my HD beamer and even play games (and also all the older PS2 games which are in the salebin for only 5 buck). Whereas when I want the Xbox360 I still have to buy the HD-drive (which makes it just as 'expensive' as the PS3), and it isn't really backward compatible with the xbox (and finding older xbox games is also a lot harder now) and the xbox360 with the HD-drive takes twice the ammount of space than the PS3 does.. Also Sega didn't have a swell marketingcampaign when it released the saturn, and hell it didn't even have a marketingcampaign when it released the dreamcast (which is a great console)..
Who the hell do they think they are by saying that they will stop people from attempting to go to space..
Space isn't US property, everybody has the right to enter space.
The US is really out of it's mind by doing stuff like this, no wonder there are more and more people thinking about the US as the biggest thread to the world, and they also are the biggest terrorists in the world.
I hope the UN will do something about this. And then people find it offensive that countries like North korea are building Nukes. They have to, because they have to defend themselves to bullies like the US.
I hope that the normal thinking american also finds such things unacceptable, because the US is a beautifull country which is lead by utter and complete morrons..
This has got nothing to do with trying to defend yourself, this got everything to do with trying to control the world..
I really wonder how valid these reports are, as in the last couple of weeks I also read a lot of reports where it states that Firefox is rapidly loosing ground...
So I guess these kinds of reports are just otherly useless...
That's a common mistake a lot of Mac suckers have, Windows XP is even more stable than MacOS X.. You also think you have a cool computer on your desk, but you don't... You think you can run all commercial software, but you can't.. And it is just as much a nightmare to administrate as Windows XP is..
And how much do you think you Paid for you MacOS X to keep it up to date..
You talk about MS continue to copy Apple's innovations, but apple doesn't have any innovations, all they have done up till know is steal other companies ideas and present them as their own (starting with the original MacOS and with the mouse, hell they even claimed it when they released the 2 button mouse a few years back) oh and don't think the i-Pod is an idea by apple.....
that ofcourse is utter bullshit... The devkits for the PS3 are just fine.. and a lot of companies are using the unreal engine 3, so that's no different than it would for like that shitty xbox 360...
And also you say that the 'akin to PS2s devkits tools: they suck', but that's not what I've seen, the PS2 devkits where extremely good...
Nope, but the world would be a lot safer because of that... But if the US disposes of their Nukes, then they can talk about other countries not allowed to create nukes.. until then they should just shut up..
Ofcourse it can't be done if countries like the US keep theirs... the US thinks it is the boss of the world, but they aren't, they are almost the biggest threath to the world because of that thinking (at least a bush-government)..
A nuke against a nuke war doesn't work (yeah, it works for the people in control, as they sit nicely in protective bunkers)....
Unless the US with it's big mouth stops making Nukes (they are even going to replace their current weapons with new ones) IMHO everybody else also has the right to create nuclear weapons. This doesn't mean that I would like it (far from it, nukes should be banned from this planet), but fair is fair, what gives the US the right to have nukes over other countries?
The UN should also demand from any country to stop making nukes, and the ones that have them should dispose of ALL nukes...
So as long as the US is making nukes themselves they have no right to tell others to stop making them...
Again, I'm say that NOBODY should have nukes...........
I have read the articles, but I can't say that this is in favour of the author of the articles..
Why? since he comments on all BR's being a bit dark, and all the disks having a 'wrong' ratio should have rang a bell that it surely is the player... But the fact that the HD-sound tracks have been dumped doesn't bode well for the Blue Ray... And why the hell they chose to use Mpeg2 compression on BR while it could also be encoded in VC1 is a mistery...
The only good comparison would be to rip the disks to Harddrive and then use the same player for comparison, that way, the standalone player can't be the problem..
I've got 3 different dvd-players, and they all have a different ratio and color when I put in the same dvd.. But I guess a really decent reviewer would have known of these kinds of things...
What you call bad movie, doesn't mean that others also call it a bad movie..
A lot of people think 'Saving private ryan' is a great movie, I think it's a bad movie..
So it's just a matter of taste.. If you look at movie history you see that there have been remakes all the time.. Americans are even too lazy too see great foreign movies unless they are remade by hollywood..
Uhm... option 1 is ofcourse no option... Option 2, I've seen too many 'professional companies' FU this simple task of replacing the OS, so you loose both your money and your files.. Option 3, it's better than option 2 as you only loose your files.. LOL...
The best option I always use is, zip all your drives, and back them up to CD's or dvd's (or to another computer if you have one), then completely reformat you system and install windows (never reinstall over a copy), and then start installing the programs you need and copy back the files you want.. (Normally after that I even start removing unnecessary files from the zips so I keep a backup of the old files for a while, until I need the space)..
I find this really sick.. Saying to others they can't build nuclear weapons, but keep on making those weapons yourself.. Unless the U.S.A. themselves stop making those weapons they can't say to other countries to stop making them (in this case Iran, a while back it was north korea).. I'm not for anyone creating nuclear weapons, but if the U.S.A. builds/keeps them any other country is also allowed to create/have them.. At the moment the biggest threat to the world is the U.S.A., and that's sad, as the U.S.A. is a very beautifull country, only to be run by complete morrons who only thing about themselves (and with that I mean really themselves, not their people)...

I'm not sure, but wasn't this article already published some month's ago on /.?
at least to me this is old news..

well, then he/she shouldn't go to Europe (or at least any EU country) because it's also illegal here in europe to circumvent a protection scheme....
you just told everybody how ignorant you really are... HDMI isn't required for playing BR-movies...

Well, instead of replacing them, just don't make new ones...
