  3. no joke? on Otherland MMO Announced · · Score: 2, Insightful
this series is one that has begged to made into a long rpg or mmo-something. it is very appropriate for this era and i think it could be exciting to play if there are as many worlds to it as the actual series.

what it must have is some aspect of a hidden "otherland" built into it... but not mentioned or even hinted at by the makers.

  4. ebay is no longer my first choice on eBay To Disallow Checks and Money Orders In US · · Score: 0, Redundant
with the changes to their layout (making it bulky and slow) and the big changes to their feedback system (no negative feedback for buyers? that's crap), ebay is no longer the place that i start my search for hard-to-find hardware and merchandise.

i agree, the more restrictions ebay applies, the more i look elsewhere

if it could work, that would be amazing. i'm not sure that foot traffic would generate enough movement to wind the spring. that also makes me wonder if larger clocks use scaled mechanisms... to google!

  6. right... on Stephen Hawking Unveils "Time Eater" Clock · · Score: 1

you mean, they could have at least made it a perpetual motion machine? automatic mechanical clocks are only available in watches because they are wound by an internal mechanism that is spun by very slight movements

  7. loud + clear? on Metallica Guitar Hero Release Has Higher Quality Than CDs · · Score: 1

i know this doesn't seem like it is possible, but i've been wondering why more modern artists don't mix for volume and clarity. out of all the albums i have, i think rush in rio, rush: different stages, motorhead: everything louder than everyone else, and slayer: diabolus in musica sound really good AND are really loud. slayer's album was the loudest one i'd ever purchased, but it still sounds great. the distortion on a few songs sounds like it is not from too much gain to max out volume, but planned to create a more gritty sound... (i think) it's done tastefully.

  8. Compared to what standards? on Berners-Lee Wants Truth Ratings For Websites · · Score: 1
is there going to be some sort of "internet standard" for truth? who will determine this standard? if we (as a nation) can't even determine a standard for simple things like "at what age should sex education be brought into the curriculum?", how can we possibly hope to define any sort of standard for the entire world?

we barely have a semblance of free-speech in real-life, now the christian theocracy that is america wants to quash all free-speech/thought floating around on the internet. maybe mine is a slightly over-the-top knee-jerk reaction, but i'm sick of seeing people's ideas getting destroyed by negations from parties that prefer to adhere to tradition than reason and discourse.

  13. and then there's reality on Laboring Longer a Growing Trend For Americans · · Score: 1
from experience (i help people plan for retirement) i can tell you that most people think social security will be enough, most people don't want to have to save. saving 3-6% with an employer match in a 401k is the most that i see most people doing, and that's going to be chump change unless they started doing it at 25 instead of 40.

i don't think there has ever been a better time in history to aspire for upward mobility of social status. so many people are going to be broke in 30 years, my goal is to help the rest. when i cold call for an appointment, people ask me what i'm selling, i tell them, "i'm selling you a retirement"

  14. straight talk on Vegas Star Trek Experience Closing Down · · Score: 1

  15. that's not the problem, on US No Longer the World's Internet Hub · · Score: 1

the voters aren't the biggest problem, the candidates are. if they aren't owned by or part of the oligarchy, they are clueless (neither one is mutually exclusive). we need officials that are actually interested in people and their well-being, and intelligent enough to ask questions... that's what will never happen

  16. ms/mac/linux compatibility on The Gamer's Bill of Rights · · Score: 1
please, make games playable on all of the major oses. i hate having to have a windows partition just to play modern games. blizzard made diablo (1 and 2?) mac compatible in the same package, i think it was even that way with warcraft. how many other studios have even made that much of a leap? bioware offered linux support with neverwinter nights, id and vivendi (i think that's the party responsible for f.e.a.r.) show linux some love by at least offering dedicated server options.

the more vista makes consumers, developers, studios, oems, and vendors mad, the more we'll see developers acknowledging mac and linux (we hope). if linux support is touted, instead of waiting a year or two to buy the game, i may buy it at release. heck, i'd even send them a letter of thanks!

  20. coming from an employee, not surprising on Best Western Loses Details On 8 Million Customers · · Score: 1
best western (doesn't seem to be) very meticulous about quality and security, they're more concerned with marketing. there's a company (MSI) that we use at my location for everything... and it's pathetic. the full-time night-audit is studying programming (java, sql, c/++/#) on his own and has no end to his list of problems that are juvenile in nature. the system uses udp, to give you an idea. the sql queries take far too long to process on our lan and there are more things that get broken each time something gets fixed with an update.

what best western needs to focus on is a uniform standard for property and database management and then put their foot down when their sources shirk the standards. perhaps that would be a step toward fixing the myriad of problems.

the corporate bigwigs insist on a punch-card timekeeping system for labor-hours, to give you an idea of their misdirection of energies

  21. is there any good way... on Rock the Vote Partners With Xbox Live · · Score: 1
to get Joe Public interested in politics? no, i'm really curious.

i'm 25 and my peers (in age) are more concerned with silly things than what really matters to the bigger picture. is there a way to get these people to see past the end of their noses? is there a way to break through the pragmatic shell of "me me me, mine mine mine, i want i want i want"? i understand that many of us are intelligent enough to see the problems, but what do we do when there aren't any good choices? choose the lesser of two evils? we tried that (or did we?), and look what it got us.

i don't think the statement "the will of the masses is not the will of the people" has ever been more accurate.

is there any way to bring change to this disgusting oligarchic system? how do "we the people" unite? can we? instead of narrowing my perspective to target principles and/or policies, i'm more concerned with a meta-answer to help guide the finer points.

i just can't understand why anyone would do this if the same audio is available in a digital format. i can understand doing it for ease of use and portability, but i think it actually ruins the recording (and the new digital version will collect dust, proverbially).

bottom line: what is acceptable and even expected from analog must not be present in digital, it's a different set of standards.
