  2. Re:Let it die. on The Music Industry's Crisis Writ Large · · Score: 1

most starting bands are low on money do it part time and if you've ever listened to demo's they suck

what is "low"? i know plenty of local-to-me artists that have made excellent recordings in their own basements and garages working fast-food. *I* have made some excellent recordings on digital and analog media.

have you ever browsed musician's friend? ever browsed ebay? it has never been expensive to make "studio-quality" recordings. it can be simple or complicated, there are varying degrees of quality all over the board (see Rush's "Vapor Trails and Metallica's "Death Magnetic").

  3. real or perceived difficulty? on IT and Health Care · · Score: 1

is it some sort of real problem, or just the expected difficulties? is it the curmudgeons in bureaucratic positions that are afraid of "new", or is there something else at work here, like mentioned above (easily finding extra charges, etc)?

for a while, i sold insurance for AFLAC. around my area, there is a HUGE hospital system, Meritcare; the last time i checked, they had around 20k employees (that's 10-15% of the working population, depending on the radius used for calculating).

they will not permit AFLAC to come in and offer their products because of the perceived difficulty of presenting and making it available to everyone.

maybe it's just me, but if wal-mart can find a way to share something with all of their employees, i'm pretty sure a relatively small hospital system can.

that has complaints about the false sense of security that condoms offer?
how many of us have experienced condoms breaking during intercourse? what about when they start rolling back just a little, and then come off during intercourse?

alternatively, i have also tried a few different types of condoms, and the ones that i thought were best were the sheepskin type and a micro-thin type. in all seriousness, they were not noticeable... but i still don't trust them enough.

when did singles sites become the target of prostitution crack-downs? just because craigslist has a "personals" section means that it is solely for prostitution? does this mean that _everyone_ on there is soliciting or seeking prostitution?

there is clearly a double standard toward craigslist and every other way to meet new members of the opposite (or same) gender. whether this is a double standard or not is irrelevant, this must be stopped; these pathetic knee-jerk "omg protect teh chrilden!1!!" is making me sick, it's everywhere

the story doesn't mention, but this is key.

first, they compare a 32bit xp to a 64bit vista; oranges to grapefruits.
next, they add windows 7 and don't mention if it's 32 or 64.
they did a decent job of being objective... but still fell short of offering us the information that we need. does 7 implement 32 and 64bit functionalities as smoothly as vista64? is it the kind of angry child that 64bit xp is?
bad grammar aside, this review is lacking some fundamental information that should have been disclosed on the first page.

  13. technology meets art on Player Piano Roll Production Ceases · · Score: 2, Interesting

while i think it is great that we are developing better technologies that can do things more precisely, faster, more cheaply, and more reliably, but i am still captivated by some of the older technological innovations that started the excitement in so many fields.

the two that always stick out in my mind are the mechanical watch and the iron skillet. almost 300 years after its invention, the mechanism/s used in automatic watches are still popular, and not just among the idle rich. this is where technology and art start to mingle, the aesthetic appeal of an automatic mechanical watch is far greater than a lame quartz movement armitron.
no matter how many "modern kitchen marvels" are created, my choice for food preparation is often the iron skillet: the greatest addition to the culinary arts/sciences since fire.

  14. Simple solution... on Universities Patenting More Student Ideas · · Score: 2, Interesting

look over any paperwork for any class/university before signing it. if there is anything about inventions, works of art, essays, etc becoming university property, refuse to sign until the contract is amended. if they will not do it, vote with your dollars and promise bad publicity (there's no need for libel or slander when the truth is this ugly).

ianal, but i would assume that a university claiming rights to someone's work without a written agreement would not be viewed too positively in any court.

  15. marketing on New Contest Will Seek the Best "I'm Linux" Video · · Score: 1

the problem seems to be that joe public doesn't see ibm in best buy or circuit city. most of what ibm offers isn't priced at a point where most buyers would consider it. beyond that, ibm is something that isn't nearly as ubiquitous as apple, windows, microsoft, google, or even yahoo.

i think the biggest hurdle is one that keeps rearing its ugly head: name and brand recognition.

right now may be one of the best chances that linux has to break into the market. most people are sick of vista, they want _inexpensive_ systems that work and are flashy. one upside to linux is that it's free, one downside is that it's free and can't (easily) launch an ad campaign to compete with m$ or apple.

perhaps one of the best ideas would be for a distro to take a big risk and launch a campaign. ubuntu comes to mind just because the ads could mention dell, and it has "just worked" on all of the machines where i've installed it.

  16. that's not great? on Waste Coffee Grounds Offer New Source of Biodiesel · · Score: 3, Interesting

a little less than half of the current demand for fuel could come from waste products, and you're saying that's shameful? improving the processes will only improve the output. increasing the use of diesel will reduce the overall demand for fuel.

  18. seems like it may go over well on Is Windows 7 Faster Or Just Smarter? · · Score: 3

considering the biggest complaints that users have about vista is that it is SO SLOW (read: responds slowly), i think microsoft may be going in the right direction (if i understand their changes correctly).

the biggest issues with vista haven't been it's performance in crunching numbers, the problems have related to how fast it seems to be. which brings up an interesting question, was much work really needed when consumer computers are quickly becoming powerful enough to actually run vista smoothly?

at the risk of being modded down... i think vista is a good os, with some tweaking. BUT, only if it's the 64bit version, 32bit is crap. furthermore, microsoft has done a great job combining 64 and 32bit functionality, i applaud that
