Just this week I was pondering the same thing with the choices offered by Google's SMS message App on my Android phone.
I came to the conclusion we are training Google's natural language AIs to understand the message we are responding to. The response we make allows the algorithm to categories the original message. If we type something new, we've just told the AI it got the choices wrong.
Actually choosing the dumb responses is confirming the AI natural language understanding, the positive feedback stimuli, typing something new is training stimuli.
These documents were in the UK, they were seized in the UK using legal powers, these documents are relevant to the ongoing Parliamentary investigation into Facebook breach of Data Protection regulation in the Cambridge Analytics scandal. Facebook have had the opportunity to testify before this Parliamentary committee, to have their 'day in court' and have repeated snubbed Parliament. Contempt of Parliament is a very serious charge, more so than their original data breach. They thought they could ignore the law in the UK and it was necessary to prove to them they cannot, as this action has proven.
Parliament is the sovereign authority in the UK, this process is entirely legal, while this authority is typically delegated to the courts, it is still vested in Parliament. They could try to appeal this to the Supreme court but they would be laughed out.
This would be entirely legal for any sovereign authority to do the same. If Facebook faced these charges before a congressional hearing, would you be equally outraged; I suggest not.
I think Israel would be quite happy to be assumed to responsible even if they were not. They would be the fall guy for the US, purely to engender the perception they were capable of this.
Iran is not short of enemies these days and this would also include the Saudis. Though I would suspect their inhouse capability, I think they would be quite able to outsource this requirement.
I watched this report last night and it was a really remarkable step, no pun intended. It was very clear from what the researchers were saying that this is very much just the beginning. That further development and refinement of both the medicine technology would be possible. Miniaturisation, increased sensitivity of the equipment, earlier intervention were all postulated as likely productive avenues of improvement.
