  1. This is crazy on RIAA Going After a 10-Year-Old Girl · · Score: 1

You know I could understand prosecuting a kid for something extremely harmful like murder OR going after the parents for a financial reason... But this is neither. They are DELIBERATELY going after a child to scare people. NO COMPANY SHOULD EVER HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO THAT. End of story.

  3. ahhh sure on Gifted Children Find Heavy Metal Comforting · · Score: 1

... That's one reason I guess. Personally I would have suggested that perhaps particularly intelligent people have the faculties required to sample metal in it's entirety and to hear all the music rather than just hearing a bunch of noise - much like how dark chocolate (or maybe wine?) needs to be sampled in it's entirety (which takes practice) to really be appreciated, otherwise it's just an overwhelming and unpleasant taste. Perhaps intelligent people are capable of taking in and processing more information at a given time than your average person. Rather than being a result of being intelligent like the article suggest, perhaps a taste for metal is merely just a sign of intelligence.

  5. I'm not into Astro... on NASA Can't Pay for Killer Asteroid Hunt · · Score: 2, Interesting

but I know a few people who do who say that we could solve the problem of a giant asteroid if we had enough warning. We know blasting it into little chunks wouldn't do much but we could actually shift it's trajectory by using just a shuttle. The shuttle would go up alongside the Asteroid to one side or another (90 degrees off the collision course) and just sit there, keeping as little distance as possible without crashing into it. By doing this, the gravity between the shuttle and the asteroid would cause a shift in the trajectory of each. As long as we keep moving the shuttle a little at a time so the don't actually collide, over the course of a decade or two it would shift enough to miss Earth. And we are capable of seeing well into the future. We already know that there is an Asteroid that could possibly hit us in (I believe) 29 years. It may not have been tried but as physics stands, there are things we can do. It's based in simple Physics and could work. We aren't totally helpless until we throw out information, either of physics or... well... physics I guess =).

  6. in grade school... on Schools Banning Homework? · · Score: 1

In grade school I didn't really learn anything outside of what I was taught in class. Homework was just an annoyance that I really didn't do anyway. In fact if it wasn't so important in college I probably still wouldn't be doing it. The only thing I did need for homework were spelling words. I studied. Homework takes time away from those who don't need it and frustrates those who do. Studying is something that a kid can do as they wish and at their own pace. And personally, my parents were always more involved in my studying than my homework. I bet you more parents would be more involved in their child's education if they had to sit down with their kids a half hour a night and help them with studying than if they just keep saying "look at the instructions." It also manages to keep the kids more interested in what their doing as well.

  8. inflammatory idea on Dell Censors IdeaStorm Linux Dissent · · Score: 1

I didn't read the post (getting better at this /. thing) but I'd imagine that an inflammatory article wasn't particularly helpful to the idea process... in fact in my experience, something like that generally means the person is lacking in the idea department but has to say something anyway. In this case it seems the equivalent of suggesting the variable "dog" for a program about banking. Next thing you know you have a bunch of clutter and comments about a dog that just aren't necessary and just slow the programming down. Personally I'm quite alright with them removing something totally useless from their idea board.

  9. right so on Virtual Reality Creates False Memories · · Score: 1

So what they're trying to tell me is they used VR to train people... IE make memories on the use of a certain type of camera... and the adverse effect is false memories. Any use of the camera that they remember before they use a real one aren't real. False memories happen all the time. If you've ever been in an argument of any kind with somebody about past events, it's quite obvious. Each person remembers the event completely differently and it's even possible to cause someone to conjure false memories with nothing more than a couple words used in the right way. I haven't been able to find the articles online but if interested look up Elizabeth F. Loftus. She's done a lot of research on the topic.

  10. It's my understanding on Behavior May Influence Evolution · · Score: 1

It's my understanding that the changes that are occurring in the lizards aren't happening across generations but within a generation itself. In other words, one litter of 10 lizards is used in the experiment, 5 in each situation. The 5 that needed to climb had shorter legs than the 5 that didn't need to climb. Genetically there is little/no variation but physically, leg length is vastly different. What I don't understand is why this is behavioral and not environmental. People that grow up in small spaces for one reason or another would end up shorter than those that didn't. Is that because they made the choice of fitting into the small space or because while they were developing in a small space that forced them to bend over. In the latter case it's just a matter of incredibly poor posture causing poor bone structure growth. In the former it's because they chose to. Personally I'm more likely to believe that the lizards developed longer or shorter legs because of growing in trees as opposed to on the ground. If you want real proof, I'd love to see a lizard change the length of it's legs as an adult depending on situations. For instance an adult lizard that has long legs, a predator shows up and it's legs shorten, then the predator dies off and the legs return to normal size (all in the course of it's adult life). THAT would be much better proof than this, but the closest I've seen to this is molting/fur loss. I'd also like to know if this change carries over, would the offspring of the short legged variant be inclined to have short legs when in normal circumstances (and grow the longer legs if the need arised) or would they return to their regular size. If it doesn't carry over in anyway then it's more akin to choosing to be a cop instead of a fire fighter rather than a step in evolution.

How about before you make a phone call... well shoot what if you have an emergency and you don't have the time for that? The only time where you are pretty sure you have the person's attention and can slip an ad in (it appears to me) is when the receiving phone is ringing. But they would have to make sure that it ONLY happened when it was ringing. It couldn't add to the time it takes to dial (emergencies) and would have to cut off if someone answered right away... If I got completely free phone and service for THAT, I'd do it in a heartbeat (provided the reception was good =))

It's also abusing the homeless' situation but of course they ARE paying the people. I won't complain about that. I don't know if they got what their time was worth but I'm sure that 20,000 Yen is still a lot more than they are used to and that can't be a bad thing. Sony is innocent... Here's a genius idea, maybe we can ask a few teachers to take their breaks outside. It seemed to work pretty well for us. Teachers stand around and chat during the break and just make sure that nobody gets hurt. What "real" teacher wouldn't want to make sure that their students weren't supervised? At least that way when a kid gets told that they can't play by one of the teachers then they can engage in the favorite past time of "I hate Mr/Mrs. so-and-so."

Everybody wants everybody else to stay but they don't want to have their own feet strapped to the floor. You notice this a lot lately (atleast in Mass) with the campaign ads, "So-and-So wants to help keep our young adults in our state"...
