exactly...all they have to do now is move their servers onto those data center barges and they can just move around from port to port (no pun intended) around the world, plundering all of the internet safely from sea.
so thats how web pages are made...they take the paper right off the rollers and scan them into the internet. I have always thought there was some kind of programming involved here...You learn something new everyday.
I also agree with parent. Recovery software is important to have and the manufacturer is simply trying to save a buck by making the consumer create these discs. There may also be other reasons for it but I am not certain. In my experience HP/Compaq do not come with these discs anymore. Gateway/emachine come with an operating system install disc and you have to make an application and driver disc. Sony used to for every machine come with recovery discs but I am starting to see more and more where you have to make it. Acer is also a make your own recovery disc however they have a program that allows you to make a complete backup of your system as it is, so when you get it setup the way you like it then you can make a recovery disc of that. The only vendor that I know of that still ships with recovery software is toshiba.
Also by the manafacturer not providing these discs the retailers are simply trying to make up for it as it is an opportunity for them to make money. You have to understand, a business is in business to make money, not sit there a be a center of free education for the masses. Because if they dont make money they cant pay their bills which means they close down.
Yes, the discs are easy to make. Yes, it is troubling that the manufacturers are not providing this software. No, it isnt wrong for the retailers to offer to make them for them. Yes, it is wrong to tell people that the manufacturer will charge more for these discs however this I believe is utter nonsense. These retailers normally charge only $20-$30 dollars to make these discs for the client (how much is your time worth)? Manufacturers from what I've seen also charge about $20-$30 and most of that is in shipping the discs usually next-day air to the customer.
Most tollbooths are already recorded to make sure that they can collect from people who pass without paying: if you don't pay the requisite fee, you get a bill. This is the same damn thing: a state (or in this case, a municipality) is charging for the use of the roads that it has to fund I do believe that the states are funded by the taxes that we already pay.
I have encountered this predicament before and my solution was to get a mini-atx case and put some hard drives in it and then load FreeNAS on it. With FreeNAS there are plenty of options to work with the different file sharing protocols supported by each of the operating systems over the network. Just an idea, may not be practical for everyone but it is just another solution to be added in to the nine-million already out there.
The problem with Linux is that it no one is marketing it. Showing an ad on television does indeed work. When was the last time you had seen a commercial on television about Linux?.
Anyone will almost buy anything or try anything if they see an ad for it, as it will increase the knowledge of said product. To most of the general population Linux is unheard of or is merely known as an "underground" operating system. I bet just a couple of commercials on some of the more watched networks would spark the interest of quite a few followers. What do you think?
Maybe you will see the military as important when you are being shot in the face because some dictator in la la dictator land decides to invade your country. It is apart of human history that we fight. Yes I do agree that being able to spend the money supporting something else would be beneficial. But we still live in the dark times of human stupidity and having no military would be a death wish. Not everyone's emotions have caught up with their intelligence. This could take some time to accomplish
The internal bestbuy.com page has a medium sized banner at the top saying "THIS KIOSK REPRESENTS LOCAL STORE PRICING" and the public bestbuy.com does not. The local kiosk simply displays items in that stores inventory.
why is it important that comets brought ice to earth...thats like saying you took a cup of water to the ocean.

I still believe after your long winded response that I am still correct in that the States are funded by the taxes in which we pay.
I got windows 3.11 to install on my p4 intel 875p board. It takes a whole 2 seconds to load to the desktop :(

I thought the picture looked more like an older Sony vaio or a Toshiba satellite.
if you used hemp, you would then have all these people getting upset over people smoking it instead of using it for fuel.
.....acting the way they are and getting into trouble where they need to be stunned in the first place :P
I have seen only one IBM ad and it was more about the company than Linux. Its also been a few years since I myself personally saw an IBM ad.
