This is simply not true, at least in America. I lived in the middle of nowhere for more than 10 years. With the rise of the Internet during this time, I fought and fought and struggled with both Phone and Cable companies to provide me with a higher speed internet access than the crappy 56k modem (that, given I was so far out really only turned out to be 20k, and yes, that's KILOBITS).
Not only did the cable company do NOTHING (except inform me that I would have service by approximately 2016, no joke) but the phone company HAD to provide at least the minimal service I had, as it was a "regulated resource." YET they charged me MORE for my phone line as I was the only one in the general area requiring their service (130$ a month for a standard line with NO long distance service, the price you pay for living in the country!)
Moral of the story: I bought a satellite dish for my internet and a cell phone for everything else. Both combined are cheaper than the single ($#!TTY) phone service! Screw cable AND phone companies!

Thank you. Ignorance makes my blood boil but your post was concise, informative and a well put response to my potential bane. I've only seen good things about the rebounding of our economy recently (if for no other good example, gas prices are at their lowest since 9/11), and people who complain about tax cuts are obviously not educated about economics or are not a part of the middle class (or so I can only assume). I am interested though, do you have any links for these figures?

  7. Re:Unwanted what-now? NoScript and AdBlock on Unwanted Popups Boosting Web Traffic · · Score: 1

100% agreed. For those that don't know, both of these are plugins for firefox that can be easily downloaded from the Firefox Extensions website:

NoScript: This is based on a white list, which means that until you specify that a site is safe, no scripts (including Javascript, Flash, VBScripts, ActiveX, anything embedded...) will run. A simple box sits in your browser letting you know if the site you are on is blocked, if only part of it is blocked (for instance the site itself is allowed, but advertising.com was blocked) or if the site was deemed safe by you. You can choose to allow or disallow sites, entire domains, subdomains, or temporarily allow any of the above. The default is to disallow, so unless you specify otherwise, all sites will be blocked from running scripts.

AdBlock: This is based off of a black list, which means that it doesn't block anything until you tell it to. This is nice though because it also allows you to use filters which can include wildcards. For instance, you can choose to block: "*advert*" which implies any image (including background images), script, flash object, frame, iframe, or even div tag that contains the phrase "advert" would not be rendered in your browser. This allows you to block individual images and though it can occasionally cause a page to look messy, it certainly unclutters the window from advertisements and is very easy to use.
The only gripes I have about both of these plugins for firefox is that for the average / beginning user, they might be a bit above their heads. They are very easy to use, but someone sitting down to get on the internet who goes to their favorite porn site, only to find that it won't load properly won't take the time to realize that it's NoScript preventing the site from operating, they generally will say "screw it" and open Internet Explorer anyway (because it WORKS in IE). For security purposes, I highly recommend teaching your entire family how to use a Firefox browser with these plugins (my own mother now uses this after only a few minutes of me sitting down with her to walk her through it!) as you will never run into a nasty ActiveX or javascript again!

Speaking of "no charge" I'm fairly sure I read that the particle discovered was actually a chain of carbons trailed by a hydrogen (a metaphoric "caboose"). That would make the particle NEGATIVE in nature! I might be wrong about this, as what I'm reading is called an anion and you guys are all talking axion's (and probably AM wrong about this, I've been out of particle physics now for a solid 6 years and my brain has moved on to less complex tasks...) "ICANN has vacated its government-mandated obligation to maintain competition and prevent discrimination in markets related to internet domain names by succumbing to VeriSign's strong arm tactic and allowing it to leverage its limited-duration contractual control over .com and .net into a permanent control over those registries and over adjacent markets segments for various domain name services."
